General

  • Family-friendly site 600m from the sea, close to Forest of la Coubre
  • 6km from La Palmyre Zoo, 10 from Royan and 2 from Saint-Palais-sur-Mer
  • Big heated waterpark, two bars, free tennis, playground and shop

Six smashing destinations are within easy reach of Camping Le Logis in the Charente-Maritime: you'll need at least one day at each, plus several more among the first-rate facilities on site. So do be sure to book at least a couple of weeks.

First up, the site is just over a kilometre from a wide sandy beach on south-west France's Côte de Beauté and (smashing destination numero deux) a few kilometres from Saint-Palais-sur-Mer, a seaside town where sun and sand seekers have basked and bathed since the late 19th century. Thirdly and fourthly, it's only 10 kilometres from here to the acclaimed department capital of Royan, and eight to the beaut green grounds of La Palmyre Zoo, its 14 hectares of gardens and its 1,600 inhabitants.

Fifthly? You won't have to get into the car to reach the Forest of la Coubre, the coastal pine woodland with trails for biking, hiking and horse riding. And finally, a 500-metre wander from the site will see you at the famed Golf de Royan course; if you've never teed off before, ask the Camping Le Logis team to arrange a private lesson.

Your additional several days on site are sorted at the pool and slides of the big 1200m² heated waterpark with paddling pool, a main pool and waterslides, and at the sporty options near the aqua area: play tennis for free, bounce a smaller ball at ping pong, or take to the sports court for football or basketball.

But, of course, you may care for a less active vibe. Sorted too: there are two bars, Le Cap and Le Bahia, serving snacks, pizza, coffee, ice cream and cold drinks, and a summer kids' club and playground to occupy the small people while you laze about with an ice cream or drink. The bars are also the venues for grownup evening entertainment in the summer.

Camping Le Logis also has a snack bar, a grocery shop and a bakery. And a seventh, if less glam, nearby destination? A major supermarket is a kilometre and a half away.

Please note

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 12/05 and 24/09 (subject to weather conditions).

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

    Location

    Disliked:

The pitch was terribly uneven and totally sand. The toilets were a steep 5 minute walk away. Whilst the toilets were clean the showers were not cleaned and it took two trips to reception to get a hair ball removed from one which had been there for 4 days prior to complaining. The pool was lovely but only heated to 24 degrees which made it feel cold. The play area was terrible - tiny and infact very dangerous with only 2 swings for hundreds of children. No bouncy castle as advertised. The camp operated a credit card type system where you had to put money on the card and then use it for everything from bread to the bar. It was slightly inconvenient and I couldn't really see the purpose. Wifi was sketchy and didn't work for most of the stay. There are 4 ping pong tables but as the site is 99% Dutch and the tables are near the football pitch often you were hit with a flying ball from the children who weren't allowed on the court as they weren't Dutch - this was what the children were saying not my words. The campsite is a mixture of mobile homes and camping. It's not an awful site and has the potential to be really lovely with a few small fixes. However, I doubt this will ever happen as the interest is in the mobiles!

Local attractions

Make the family-friendly seaside resort of Saint-Palais-sur-Mer a few minutes' drive from the site, an early option when you're staying at Camping Le Logis as there's heaps to do here for all ages.

As well as its five-kilometre beach, the town has markets, bars, a nightclub, and a beach club for kids with magic shows, games, storytelling and circus sessions. Sand yachting, sailing, surfing, jetskiing, tubing, paddleboarding and sea kayaking can all be arranged; ask at the Saint-Palais-sur-Mer National Sailing School for details.

Hire a bike on site to pedal through the Forest of la Coubre and along the coast, on all or part of the 30-kilometre trail between Saint-Palais-sur-mer and Ronce-les-Bains. Purpose-built mountain bike trails and horse riding trails carved out by the National Forestry Office weave through the trees, as do horse riding trails carved out by the National Forestry Office. For hiking, take one of the many marked walking trails or get onto the GR 4 long-distance path, passing through the forest on its route from Royan to Ronce-les-Bains.

A casino, promenade and busy vibe are at Royan, 15 minutes' drive away or about 25 minutes by bus. The town's probably best known for its five spectacular beaches and its setting at the mouth of the Gironde estuary, the biggest in western Europe.

Board a boat from Royan for a guided tour among the cliffs and marshes, looking out for storks and herons as you drift along, or stay in town to wander the gardens under the cube of the Palais des congrès and to check out the town's notable architecture like the Central Market and the Notre Dame church.

The beaches of Vaux, Pontaillac, La Palmyre, La Côte Sauvage and Ronce-les-Bains also come highly recommended by the Logis team; for a bit of history and culture, take a trip to the Vauban fortifications of Brouage and the Royal Ropeworks in Rochefort (35 kilometres), the small town centre of Saintes (40 kilometres) and the historic port of La Rochelle (65 kilometres).
