  • Family-friendly campsite 600m from the beach
  • Huge waterpark with waterslides, Jacuzzi and paddling pools
  • Bar with snacks and takeaway; restaurant with terrace

An Atlantic coast beach is a 600-metre amble from friendly and family-friendly Camping L'Océan in the Vendée – but you might put even that off for a bit to have a splash around its first-rate waterpark.

Semi covered so you can have dips whatever the weather, the heated waterpark spreads over 1,000m² of main pool, paddling pool, waterslides and Jacuzzi. There's also a sizeable outdoor pool, including more slides, a paddling pool with water toys, and space alongside for sunbathing… wifi access is available throughout the park too if you want to lounge and surf.

A full and lively programme of entertainment and activities runs in summer in and out of the water, including aqua gym, pony rides, gym sessions, sports tournaments, and nights for karaoke, dancing, music and magic. The kids' club takes ages six to 11, while teenagers can join the site team for a spot of sport.

Also around are a roomy bar, with snacks, takeaway service and games; a well-stocked shop selling groceries, souvenirs and beach gear, and a spacious and friendly restaurant, with plenty of terrace room.

Amenities include four sanitary blocks and a laundry room with tumble dryers.

Rubbish, overpriced, optimistic brochure description, good location 06/08/2017

Lovely region of france, the pitches were a good size

Where do we start, set up for French holiday makers, facilities were poor, pool was clean, bar was poor, restaurant was poor all very expensive. Site shop charged like a wounded bull! The toilets were disgusting. Water point next to Elsan disposal - apparently this is ok in France however it wasn't clean or hygienic collecting drinking water we had to concoct a pipe to collect water from the laundry sink as elsan splashed back on to the drinking water pipe and tap. The walk to the beach is longer than advertised. And the pictures in the brochure of the pool and pitches are "artistic" and make the campsite look far more attractive than it is. It reminded me of "pontins" great if you liked that thing but I've stayed in much nicer and cheaper French campsites than this one! Would not go back again if you paid me! To top off the holiday when leaving (early - they forgot to set the barrier to open early 7 am and we were waiting 45 mins till someone came to unlock it) had a queue behind us!!

Great fun surf style toilet block with double/ family showers brilliant for showering younger children. Even though the site was full always plenty of facilities to use so didn't feel crowed at all. Great location, great pools and free activities like climbing wall in the evenings

If I was being picky some of the pitches were a little small. The pitch we were given was not big enough for our van and awning but when I told the staff they were really helpful and spent a lot of time shuffling things to accommodate us.

Local attractions

Camping L'Océan is a short stroll from the sands of Brem-sur-Mer, an Atlantic coast seaside town known for its beach and its vineyard established in the 14th century by local monks.

Under 10 minutes' drive from Brem is more of the seasidey same at Bretignolles-sur-Mer, home of a 13-kilometre beach popular with families (if you want a quieter Bretignolles beachy spot for the day, follow the Route de la Corniche from the town centre). One of the Vendée's many cycle paths is accessible from town too, from the beach a short distance to the shops and restaurants of Bretignolles town, and around the Parc de Morinières.

Another famed Vendée seaside town is within day trip distance at swish Les Sables d'Olonne, 20 kilometres north of Bretignolles or about 20 minutes' drive from the site. It's a busy and popular town, with a three-kilometre beach, busy fishing port and big harbour; arrange boat trips from this latter if you want to get out onto the Atlantic.

The Camping L'Océan team also recommends nearby La Gachère, a little fishing village with narrow roads and low houses. Cycling trails are 200 metres away; bikes can be hired on site.
