  • Well-equipped Flanders holiday park on the edge of Jabbeke
  • Bruges or Ostend 15 minutes' drive; half an hour to Blankenberge beach
  • Restaurants and kids' activities; playground and pétanque court
Bruges 15 minutes’ drive in one direction, Ostend and the Flanders coast the same amount in the other, easy access from the A10 motorway… and right here by the site a small lake, a beach (open in July and August only) and a whole lot of open space in which to relax. Yes, it’s safe to say that Vakantiepark Klein Strand is in an excellent location for an action-packed family holiday. This well-equipped holiday park is just on the edge of Jabbeke, about 10 minutes’ walk from the town’s shops, cafés and restaurants. If you don’t feel like going that far, no worries – there are two small restaurants on site (a Chinese and another serving up family favourites like pizzas and burgers), and you’re welcome to light up a barbecue as well. Working up an appetite shouldn’t be difficult at all, given the many activities available on site or nearby. A real highlight of this park is the lifeguarded lakefront beach with waterslides, which is open in July and August for swimming; it is close to the A10 and you may hear some traffic noise. From May to the end of September, sign yourself up for watersports for an additional fee too. Elsewhere are a playground and pétanque court, and the site runs kids’ and teens’ activities in high season (giving parents a chance to chill out on the park’s terrace or around the gardens). More activity? You got it. There are some lovely areas nearby for walks and bike rides, and you can easily take days out in Bruges (15 minutes’ drive), Ghent (35 minutes) or up at the coast in places like Ostend (15 minutes) and Blankenberge (half an hour).

What customers say

This is a large, well-maintained site with spacious, private pitches. Facilities are generally clean and praised, though some mention a need for updates and occasional queues. The site is popular with families, offering a lake, water park, and play areas. Its location is convenient for Bruges and major roads. Some guests noted noise from the nearby motorway, the site itself, and the occasional issue with barking dogs. A few found the shower payment system inconvenient.

Liked Location in Jabbeke and proximity to Brugge. That said, Klein Strand presented us with more than a few problems. Pitch size okay.

Disliked No entry on site before 3pm. Vehicle registration plate not entered onto site system, so the barrier never opened without manual access code being used by the driver or passenger. Hot water showers controlled by computer. All failed in the men’s block. Result: The site staff put the showers on free vend. Showers should be free anyway and not charged as is for 50c per minute.
Exit barriers did not recognise vehicle registration plate, again I had to complain to site administration staff.
On our last morning, there was a torrential downpour of rain which delayed our exit from the site due to our awning being wet. After an hour approx 11:10 the awning was taken down and packed, I went to the shower to freshen up and the site had deleted my shower access code and taken approximately 9euros of credit. So no shower available to removed mud from my body. Not wanting to stay any longer, we headed to the exit barrier, but my registration or barrier code did not work. At the exit barrier with car and caravan, a queue formed and multiple people had invalid codes for the barrier. I sent an email to the site office and they explained that after 11:00 , the codes were invalid. Other campers began arriving to see what was happening and they in turn said that the only way out is to pay an exit fee. Given the surveillance cameras everywhere, the site staff made no effort to help, not only my situation, but that of other camp mates. All I can say is that Klein Strand 2 made our stay difficult.
We had 9 days of problems, so we won’t be returning to this site.
They have lost the personal touch and don’t even have an office on site. It’s up the road in another location. Poor show.

From the manager: Dear Jonathann,

I’m sorry to hear that you weren’t assisted.
However, I’d like to point out that all our communications clearly state that check-in is not possible until 3 p.m. and check-out must be completed by 11 a.m.
I understand the situation you experienced, but you could have contacted our front desk. The front desk is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the low season and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. during the high season. When the front desk is closed, our night manager is always on duty.
I am certain that the front desk would have offered you an appropriate solution, without requiring you to pay an exit fee, given your situation.
Our reception desk is located at the main entrance to the park, as indicated on our map.
Unfortunately, our park is divided by a public street, so you’ll need to walk a short distance to reach the reception desk.
Our showers are always paid and will remain so to prevent abuse. Unfortunately, it can happen that the code system malfunctions, in which case everyone is currently allowed to shower for free.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Convenience for fast road network

Disliked Far too much noise onsite from facilities. Pitch-up found this as a search for “grass pitch” although primarily this is a holiday park. This meant loud open bar late into the night with absolutely no regard or consideration for guests who did not want to participate in the “Brits-abroad” on the lash. Whilst this was ongoing there were no staff available to find out about “quiet hours” -

Liked Nice clean site, quiet at this time of year.
We don't walk much or cycle and the site is a long way from the centre, we drove to Sassenheim to park our motorhome, then caught train into Amsterdam, very easy to do and cheap. No motor home parking near Leiden station.

Disliked Away from town centre, only difficult if you don't cycle though.

Local attractions

Gentle walks and bike rides part of your holiday plan? Start local with trips to the Maskobossen forest (five minutes’ drive/10 minutes’ cycle) or visit one of the last Flemish polder hayland landscapes at the Paddegat nature reserve (10 minutes’ drive/15 minutes’ cycle). A little further afield is the coastal scenery of the Zwin Nature Park (35 minutes’ drive), where you can also take a walk on the beach. Speaking of beaches, there are some lovely beach towns along the coast, including Blankenberge (half an hour), with its aquarium and Art Nouveau buildings, and Knokke-Heist (35 minutes), a local favourite for its nine kilometres of sand. A day trip to Bruges (15 minutes) should certainly be on the cards too, for a boat tour on the canals, a climb up the Belfry Tower, some art at the Groeningemuseum and a wander around all the pretty streets and squares. If you’ve got more days to fill, you could also take a trip to Ghent (35 minutes) or visit the battlefields and In Flanders Fields Museum in Ypres (50 minutes).
