Fully-serviced grass touring pitch

Liked: Sehr schöner Campingplatz mit eigenem See. Überschaubar nicht zu überlaufen. Rezeption spricht auch Deutsch sind sehr Hilfsbereit. Ruhige Lagw

Duschen kostet hier pro Minute 0,50 Euro was schon wirklich Wucher ist.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Nothing at all - it was an horrific experience.

Disliked: Having inundated us with e mails, the last e mail we received ahead of our 2 night stay from 5th-6th June was on 3rd June which clearly advised that we had been allocated a tent pitch and check in times were from 3-8p.m. Having travelled around 600 kilometres on a motorbike through very wet conditions, we arrived at 7.10p.m. We were cold, tired and hungry but looking forward to our stay.

On arrival, the reception office was shut. We attempted to use the self- check in machine but it did not recognise us. We tried to call the advertised phone number for assistance several times but it simply did not connect. We went into the on-site Chinese restaurant and bar to ask for contact details of anyone who could help, but they had none.

We walked onto the main site to try to find the tent pitches. Walking around in heavy, wet motorbike gear was exhausting. We found no tent pitches. We asked a passer-by and they kindly explained that the tent pitches were in an entirely different location on the opposite side of the road, a few hundred metres further up. It was at this point that we connected to our phone to check the location and noticed that an e mail had been sent earlier in the day whilst we were travelling in a language which we did not recognise, but from which we guessed that check in time was in fact 3p.m and our tent pitch was 173.

We trudged up to the other site. We checked the site map and had to ride around the barrier to gain access. Finally, at 9p.m i.e. nearly 2 hours later, we found our “pitch” which was more like a building site than a tent pitch. However, it was now very late and threatening to rain and so we set up our tent and in so doing, we were stung by nettles. When the rain arrived soon afterwards, our tent let in water due to us not being able to pitch it properly because we could not get the pegs into the ground due to concrete slabs just under the soil and many of our possessions got soaked. It was too late to go out and get any food – we were therefore now very hungry.

Due to a code on the toilet door, we only managed to use the toilets by tailgating other customers but were unable to use the showers because these also needed a code.

After a long, very uncomfortable night trying to sleep in what was in effect a lumpy, mud bath, we decided to abandon our stay and pack up and go home a day early. We had decided that we were simply too upset and angry at the time to go into reception to voice our significant concerns. However, as we were loading up, a member of staff from the site arrived – no doubt alerted to our presence by our neighbours in static caravans who thought we were squatters.

Initially, the member of staff was very defensive – she told us we had arrived too late, that we had not tried to call the advertised number when we did arrive and then astonishingly told us that there were 2 pitches with the same number and we had gone to the wrong pitch! (On subsequently checking, it looks like the campsite made a typo with the pitch number it gave us – incorrectly telling us we had pitch number 173 and not number 163).

The member of staff moved on to listen to our concerns, apologised and said she would report the matter to her boss to consider how we could be compensated for the whole negative experience. We pointed out it wasn’t just the first awful night which needed to be considered, but its consequences i.e. it was also losing a day of our holiday and needing to pay for making an alteration to our Channel crossing back home.

To date we have not any follow up contact at all from Vakantiepark Klein Strand about this horrific stay about which we are not at all surprised. Given what had happened to us, we did not expect any. Delivering good customer service is clearly not a concern or a priority for this campsite. Not only will this negative experience mean we will never return, it is extremely unlikely we will even ever return to Belgium.

Liked: Friendly staff, clean facilities, close to bus routes & supermarket. Close enough to visit Bruges buy bus or bike. WiFi worked well for us during our stay & code payment system for showers was easy to use.

Disliked: Be prepared for some road noise as the site is close to the motorway. Didn't bother us really though & we were in a roof tent.

Local attractions

Gentle walks and bike rides part of your holiday plan? Start local with trips to the Maskobossen forest (five minutes’ drive/10 minutes’ cycle) or visit one of the last Flemish polder hayland landscapes at the Paddegat nature reserve (10 minutes’ drive/15 minutes’ cycle). A little further afield is the coastal scenery of the Zwin Nature Park (35 minutes’ drive), where you can also take a walk on the beach. Speaking of beaches, there are some lovely beach towns along the coast, including Blankenberge (half an hour), with its aquarium and Art Nouveau buildings, and Knokke-Heist (35 minutes), a local favourite for its nine kilometres of sand. A day trip to Bruges (15 minutes) should certainly be on the cards too, for a boat tour on the canals, a climb up the Belfry Tower, some art at the Groeningemuseum and a wander around all the pretty streets and squares. If you’ve got more days to fill, you could also take a trip to Ghent (35 minutes) or visit the battlefields and In Flanders Fields Museum in Ypres (50 minutes).
