General
- Peaceful pod in the Black Mountains, close to Offa's Dyke Path
- Half an hour's drive from Abergavenny and Hay-on-Wye
- Underfloor heating, ensuite bathroom, barbecue and outdoor seating
The Brecon Beacons, the Black Mountains… and your own little rural retreat from which to explore it all? Stay at The Pod at Chapel Farm and you’ll be in a fab Monmouthshire location for getting out to see it all.
Routes for hikes and bike rides are in plentiful supply around these parts (on the Offa’s Dyke Path and Cambrian Way, among others) and there’s a pony trekking centre 10 minutes’ walk away for folk who’d like to trot their way through the scenic surrounds.
Immersing yourselves in countryside pursuits is a fab ideaof course, but it’s an equally fine plan to schedule in some town time, particularly if you like independent shops: Abergavenny (for foodie pickings) and Hay-on-Wye (for books) are both about half an hour’s drive away.
It’s worth scooping up plenty of supplies in either town, because the self-catering facilities back at base are well set up for alfresco dining. Next to the pod is a little cooking shed with a barbecue, and an outdoor seating area with table and chairs for outdoor eats. It’s a splendid place for a fresh-air brekkie too, and there’s a kettle, fridge and toaster in the pod to sort that.
Peaceful times are pretty much guaranteed here as the pod’s the only one on site; cosy ones are on the cards too, as it’s kitted out with underfloor heating, comfy proper beds and an ensuite bathroom.

Local attractions
There are many ways to get out and breathe that fab fresh air - the Offa’s Dyke Path is about a mile away, and there’s much good biking to be done in the Black Mountains too. For a change of activity, there’s horse riding for novices and experts 10 minutes’ walk away and a range of watersports at Llangorse Lake (45 minutes’ drive).
It’s worth taking a dip into the area’s history, too – start with a wander around the ruins of Llanthony Priory (10 minutes) or drive a little further to crumbling Crickhowell Castle (40 minutes), built in the 12th century. For a glance into past industry, head to the furnaces and workers’ cottages of Blaenavon Ironworks and the Big Pit coal mining museum (45 minutes).
Aim to spend a bit of Abergavenny (half an hour) too – this is a town that loves its food, hosting lots of independent shops, food markets and festivals. Just outside town is Sugar Loaf Vineyards, a fine place to take a tour and pick up a bottle to sip with your evening barbecue.
