The Pod at Chapel Farm: Cooking shed and picnic table by the pod

General

  • Peaceful pod in the Black Mountains, close to Offa's Dyke Path
  • Half an hour's drive from Abergavenny and Hay-on-Wye
  • Underfloor heating, ensuite bathroom, barbecue and outdoor seating

The Brecon Beacons, the Black Mountains… and your own little rural retreat from which to explore it all? Stay at The Pod at Chapel Farm and you’ll be in a fab Monmouthshire location for getting out to see it all.

Routes for hikes and bike rides are in plentiful supply around these parts (on the Offa’s Dyke Path and Cambrian Way, among others) and there’s a pony trekking centre 10 minutes’ walk away for folk who’d like to trot their way through the scenic surrounds.

Immersing yourselves in countryside pursuits is a fab ideaof course, but it’s an equally fine plan to schedule in some town time, particularly if you like independent shops: Abergavenny (for foodie pickings) and Hay-on-Wye (for books) are both about half an hour’s drive away.

It’s worth scooping up plenty of supplies in either town, because the self-catering facilities back at base are well set up for alfresco dining. Next to the pod is a little cooking shed with a barbecue, and an outdoor seating area with table and chairs for outdoor eats. It’s a splendid place for a fresh-air brekkie too, and there’s a kettle, fridge and toaster in the pod to sort that.

Peaceful times are pretty much guaranteed here as the pod’s the only one on site; cosy ones are on the cards too, as it’s kitted out with underfloor heating, comfy proper beds and an ensuite bathroom.

Absolutely nothing to dislike. Hannah( the owner) has thrown her heart and sole in the pod. It is in a piece full and idyllic setting. A great chill out and wind down experience.

Nothing better than a roaring open fire( fire pit provided) with a glass of whiskey, watching the night time sky and the starts.

    Disliked:

Access road from Hay-on-wye can be a bit daunting for inexperienced drivers. The views through the national park are worth driving slowly. Remember, the wild sheep have right of way.

Great little pod in fantastic location08/18/2021

Location - fantastic for walks in the Black Mountains, all from the Pod. It was a delight to watch the horses from the next door field being walked up to the pony trekking centre and back each day. It was quiet and remote, and lovely to hear the stream flowing at the back of the Pod.
Great bathroom - bigger than ours at home! Plenty of hot water and good shower.
Underfloor heating - great idea! we used it once for 20mins as we'd come back cold from walking in the rain, but that was plenty to take the edge off and warm up my feet!
Provided: 2 single beds and bed linen, luxury towels, kettle, mugs, microwave, fridge in the Pod; plates & bowls, small saucepan, frying pan, utensils, washing up bowl in the shed; tap for drinking water outside. Gas barbeque with ring for saucepan on the side. I wasn't sure how we would manage with the BBQ as we don't have one at home, but it was easier to manage than I had thought, and the ring really helped a beginner like me!

    Disliked:

Might be helpful to bring water container as drinking water tap is slightly away from the Pod. Just to manage expectations, there isn't a sink in the shed, just a washing up bowl, which was fine, and the water from the sink in the bathroom was lovely and hot which we used to fill the washing up bowl. Gas barbeque: half of it has a yellow, sooty flame which makes it a bit difficult to clean afterwards.

The pod is the only one onsite.
The peace and quiet with only horses in the next paddock, sheep sneaking in the field as the grass must have been tasty and a friendly cat...
No signal, no Internet and lots of walking opportunities.
The pod is spotless and looks new with all required to cook except food and drinks.
The underfloor heating was definitely a plus in rainy weather and the shower was really hot.
I shall rebook when walking in the area again.

    Disliked:

I do hope the road access from Llanthony/Abergavenny will be reopened soon

Everything, can't fault anything! The pod was pristine and the heated flooring was especially good for drying our wet socks after a day of walking in the rain lol.
Plenty of tea and coffee provided. All utensils, cups, glasses, towels and bedding etc were provided, just needed to bring food and kindling for the amazing firepit - a welcome warmth to sit outside in the evening.
Plenty of walks in the local vicinity, pod is located in a quiet field, shared with the local sheep and with a lovely babbling stream behind.
Loved being totally off the grid with no wifi or phone signal - Peace!
Overall a wonderful stay and will definitely return but maybe in the summer next time!
As well as warning us in advance of a road closure, a welcome note with contact numbers was also left.

everything! from the lovely cozy pod with ensuite to the kitchen shed with everything you need to cook your meals, it was amazing. We loved sharing the paddock with two ewes and their lambs and the tea time visit from a local cat! The stream behind the pod and the panoramic views were just stunning. We took advantage of the wee firepit and spent a whole evening just feeding the fire, sipping wine chatting and reading. I have returned home refreshed and can't wait to return.

The location, the lack of signal and WiFi and the underfloor heating is a stroke of genius. If you want to get off the hamster wheel for a few days it is the perfect place to go. The sheep are friendly and if you're lucky you will see the ponies from the neighbouring field trotting down the road in a big pack.

Local attractions

There are many ways to get out and breathe that fab fresh air - the Offa’s Dyke Path is about a mile away, and there’s much good biking to be done in the Black Mountains too. For a change of activity, there’s horse riding for novices and experts 10 minutes’ walk away and a range of watersports at Llangorse Lake (45 minutes’ drive).

It’s worth taking a dip into the area’s history, too – start with a wander around the ruins of Llanthony Priory (10 minutes) or drive a little further to crumbling Crickhowell Castle (40 minutes), built in the 12th century. For a glance into past industry, head to the furnaces and workers’ cottages of Blaenavon Ironworks and the Big Pit coal mining museum (45 minutes).

Aim to spend a bit of Abergavenny (half an hour) too – this is a town that loves its food, hosting lots of independent shops, food markets and festivals. Just outside town is Sugar Loaf Vineyards, a fine place to take a tour and pick up a bottle to sip with your evening barbecue.

Must see

  • Blaenavon Ironworks (22.3 kilometres)
  • Blaenavon World Heritage Centre & Tourist Information Centre (22.7 kilometres)
  • Big Pit: National Coal Museum (22.9 kilometres)
