The Pod at Chapel Farm: Cooking shed and picnic table by the pod

General

  • Peaceful pod in the Black Mountains, close to Offa's Dyke Path
  • Half an hour's drive from Abergavenny and Hay-on-Wye
  • Underfloor heating, ensuite bathroom, barbecue and outdoor seating

The Brecon Beacons, the Black Mountains… and your own little rural retreat from which to explore it all? Stay at The Pod at Chapel Farm and you’ll be in a fab Monmouthshire location for getting out to see it all.

Routes for hikes and bike rides are in plentiful supply around these parts (on the Offa’s Dyke Path and Cambrian Way, among others) and there’s a pony trekking centre 10 minutes’ walk away for folk who’d like to trot their way through the scenic surrounds.

Immersing yourselves in countryside pursuits is a fab ideaof course, but it’s an equally fine plan to schedule in some town time, particularly if you like independent shops: Abergavenny (for foodie pickings) and Hay-on-Wye (for books) are both about half an hour’s drive away.

It’s worth scooping up plenty of supplies in either town, because the self-catering facilities back at base are well set up for alfresco dining. Next to the pod is a little cooking shed with a barbecue, and an outdoor seating area with table and chairs for outdoor eats. It’s a splendid place for a fresh-air brekkie too, and there’s a kettle, fridge and toaster in the pod to sort that.

Peaceful times are pretty much guaranteed here as the pod’s the only one on site; cosy ones are on the cards too, as it’s kitted out with underfloor heating, comfy proper beds and an ensuite bathroom.

This is our 2nd stay at the Pod. Its such a peaceful retreat, and ideal to just get away from it all. We love it here. It has everything you need for a clamping pod and such a great base for hill walking as there are several routes you can take direct from Capel Y Ffin. We will be back. No wifi or Mobile signal but this was actually a good thing for the 3 days we stayed (digital detox). Reasonable prices (based on time of year). Thank you

The pod is very cosy and absolutely spotless with all the equipment you could possibly need. The en-suite bathroom is excellent and cooking hut handy and can be used as an extra room if the evenings are too cool to sit outside. The location is superb and has some wonderful walks direct from the pod along the valley. The owners are very friendly and contactable if needed. I would highly recommend this accomodation.

Perfect in pretty much every way. The road to the Pod is somewhat of an adventure but don't let that put you off. The Pod has everything you need for a short break apart from your clothes. Spotlessly clean and warm and comfortable. The shower was great and I didn't experience any problems with constant temeperature. The beds were comfortable too. The biggest plus for me was the resident cat. I was really missing my little black cat and this more than made up for it. What a beautiful and friendly little critter. Hope it was okay I did treat it to my own cat's favourite cat sticks.

    Disliked:

Absolutely nothing. To some the lack of mobile signal and wifi would be a negative but for me it was a big plus.

Absolutely loved staying here for a mini break!! Time flew by and it was so peaceful and romantic with outstanding surrounding views. The pod had everything you needed, just need to bring clothes and food with you, or even like me and my other half did - drive into hay on wye village for a little wander and buy food from there and grab a pint in the local welcoming pub. Amazing walks nearby, secluded area with no one around and the entire field to yourself! Got all facilities etc and very high standard including cleanliness within the pod. Also didn't notice the black mountain adventure place until we had to go so we will be returning to rebook ASAP but will be taking the kids too to experience this. Amazing service from Hannah she's a lovely helpful lady. First time glamping and won't be the last either! A proper glamping girl fan after this experience <3

    Disliked:

Nothing just bring some spare change just in case you need to use the phonebox outside the field as you might have no signal on your devices- I had none lol

Loved the little sleeping hut and cooking shed, the place was so cosy! The whole setup was so clean. I felt so guilty using the grill as it was brand new, but it was a great addition to have gas and a grill to cook on.

The hut itself is amazing, fridge, kettle, heaters and a shower and toilet -- what more could you ask for? Well, there was also a map and some games in the top draw. It was all really well thought out.

We stayed in and avoided the worst of the weather and had a comfy evening playing games and a welcomed, silent sleep in the pitch black!

Really enjoyed the location and cosiness, we'd definitely come back again.

    Disliked:

More something I noted than disliked, the ground is a little soft for those in bigger vehicles -- I'd recommend not going too far in if it looks damp and staying near the gate instead of churning up the ground. It had been heavily raining so I should have known better.

From the manager...

We’re glad you enjoyed your stay with us, and hope you will come back to stay when the weather isn’t as wild.
We have big plans for access to the The Pod which should hopefully make it more accessible especially with the lovely wet Welsh weather we have, we just need a little bit of sunshine first 😊

Local attractions

There are many ways to get out and breathe that fab fresh air - the Offa’s Dyke Path is about a mile away, and there’s much good biking to be done in the Black Mountains too. For a change of activity, there’s horse riding for novices and experts 10 minutes’ walk away and a range of watersports at Llangorse Lake (45 minutes’ drive).

It’s worth taking a dip into the area’s history, too – start with a wander around the ruins of Llanthony Priory (10 minutes) or drive a little further to crumbling Crickhowell Castle (40 minutes), built in the 12th century. For a glance into past industry, head to the furnaces and workers’ cottages of Blaenavon Ironworks and the Big Pit coal mining museum (45 minutes).

Aim to spend a bit of Abergavenny (half an hour) too – this is a town that loves its food, hosting lots of independent shops, food markets and festivals. Just outside town is Sugar Loaf Vineyards, a fine place to take a tour and pick up a bottle to sip with your evening barbecue.

Must see

  • Blaenavon Ironworks (22.3 kilometres)
  • Blaenavon World Heritage Centre & Tourist Information Centre (22.7 kilometres)
  • Big Pit: National Coal Museum (22.9 kilometres)
