Eco Camping Wales: The View pitch

General

  • Farm site with stunning 360-degree views of the Black Mountain
  • A five-minute drive from the National Showcaves Centre for Wales
  • On the Beacons Way trail in the Brecon Beacons National Park

Room to breathe and a friendly welcome – what more could you ask for from a scenic site like Eco Camping Wales in the Brecon Beacons’ gorgeous Glyntawe valley?

Well, 360-degree views of the spectacular Black Mountain for starters. The environmentally friendly setup is another big bonus – the site channels cold mountain spring water into its hand-washing basins, for example (not for drinking, bring your own) – as is the back-to-nature feel (there are no concrete hardstandings or electric hook-ups here).

This Glamorgan site encourages open-fire cooking across most of the grounds (bring reusable barbecues/firepits and raise them high off the ground, please) and phone reception is limited – so you can gleefully tell work they won’t be able to get in touch.

Try to get as much time out of the office as you can to take on all the nearby treks; the owners particularly recommend roaming to Llyn y Fan Fawr lake on the long-distance Beacons Way trail that passes the park. Wander to one of the pubs a few minutes from the site too, pick up supplies at the village shop in Ynyswen or head to Ystradgynlais’s coffee shops.

A few bits and pieces to be aware of if you’re planning on staying here: the shower is coin operated; you'll need to bring your own drinking water; firewood/kindling is for sale on site (the owners are happy for you to bring your own); and there’s no commercial waste so please be prepared to take all rubbish home and leave the space as you find it.

Please note

Units longer than 6 metres are not allowed.

There are no bins onsite: all rubbish will need to be taken home with you.

Bookings must not be for more than 7 consecutive nights.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

A charge of £1.00 applies for the use of the shower.

Minimum spacing of 5 metres between pitches.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

The ground was nice and flat ! The views are beautiful with local shops, places to eat out and attractions including a lovely country park... although the site itself is also very pleasant to camp in, if it had more showers, toilets and water supplies it would definitely be a 5 star 🌟

Stunning views and the designated pitches (rather than general camping) are lovely and private. Composting toilet (loo with a view) was great. Firepits are available for use are great. Great walking nearby. Friendly hosts (who let us pitch up early o this occasion).

    Disliked:

Road noise was pretty loud through the day, very occasionally at night, but generally speaking quiet after 7pm.

Stayed a couple of nights for my wife's birthday so we could enjoy adventures in the area. We liked the large pitch area and great views. The fire barrel was great to be able to sit around in the evenings. We had a great clear sky late on the second night giving an amazing starry sky. The pitch was a good distance from other pitches so disturbances from them was minimal with a few stray head torches shining in and some people talking loudly but nothing major.

    Disliked:

Most of the pitch was on a slope so there was only a small section to get an almost level bed for the night. The island part was more level but not easy access over a stream, the firepit was fixed and not allowed on the island due to pine needles and fire risk (I have stayed on many forest sites which have allowed fires in pine tree areas so it is a bit of a moot point.)
The area the fire pit was fixed into the ground was on a slope so the seating wasn't as comfortable as it could be.

The pitch itself was sold as a secluded pitch, which is definitely wasn't. The pitch was next to the main road through the site and to the toilet area so there was traffic along there which almost everybody passing was looking at the pitch. There was a track along the bottom of the pitch that led to two further pitches creating traffic along a second side. The water tap that services ours and the other two pitches was at the roadside at the foot of our pitch meaning the people from the other two pitches were filling up water and washing up right by us.

The shower is coin operated and looked dated and tired. We opted to just shower when we got home instead. If you have to pay for a shower then I would expect it to look a lot nicer. The toilet and shower are a few minutes walk uphill from the pitch which makes it a bit far.

Finally we were told we could park the car on the pitch near the tent by the one owner only to be told by the other we had to move it and the “he will overrule what his wife said” it felt a bit confrontational and could have been dealt with much more apologetically. It put a bit of a downer on the first nights stay as we felt a bit unwelcome

From the manager...

Thanks for your comments

Yes pitch not perfectly level, tents need to go on top part of pitch hence 4 man tent, can camp under trees which flat, some have, no complaints about this before. Ok I agree that word "secluded" not best choice but no others camping in sight of pitch. I would hardly say water tap right near you on track at bottom and not on the pitch.

We try to recycle/upcycle as much as possible and hence bathroom furniture came from local volunteer community project giving it a new life. If you want 2021 design perhaps not for you, pictures on website. Max 5 min walk up to barn.

I (Wife) said you could off load car by pitch and then park down bottoming car parking pitch which you agreed to as no cars by pitch.

We don't advertise the island to camp on as part of pitch but added bonus if you want to. We do not want risk of fire on island. Other fire pit fixed as visible to all and have gone missing.

Local attractions

It would be difficult to land on a better location for stints in south Wales than this one: set in the Brecon Beacons National Park, it’s a five-minute drive from the National Showcaves Centre for Wales and its scenic Craig-y-Nos park. You can also hop on a horse at the local stable or hire an ebike to explore the mountains.

Head to Henrhyd Falls (15 minutes' drive) to walk behind the wall of water; you might recognise this spot from several films, including Batman. The Wales Ape & Monkey Sanctuary is nearby as well, so drop in to see the primates before meeting the meerkats at Pen-y-Cae’s microzoo (five minutes).

Wanting more waterfalls? There are three to see while wending your way along a walking loop near Pontneddfechan (15 minutes), a popular part of the national park for pottering about.

Fan of fishing? Get the rod out at the River Tawe or by the Crai Reservoir (10 minutes). You could also angle down by the sea at the Gower’s gorgeous beaches near Swansea (an hour).
