General

  • Farm site with stunning 360-degree views of the Black Mountain
  • A five-minute drive from the National Showcaves Centre for Wales
  • On the Beacons Way trail in the Brecon Beacons National Park

Room to breathe and a friendly welcome – what more could you ask for from a scenic site like Eco Camping Wales in the Brecon Beacons’ gorgeous Glyntawe valley?

Well, 360-degree views of the spectacular Black Mountain for starters. The environmentally friendly setup is another big bonus – the site channels cold mountain spring water into its hand-washing basins, for example (not for drinking, bring your own) – as is the back-to-nature feel (there are no concrete hardstandings or electric hook-ups here).

This Glamorgan site encourages open-fire cooking across most of the grounds (bring reusable barbecues/firepits and raise them high off the ground, please) and phone reception is limited – so you can gleefully tell work they won’t be able to get in touch.

Try to get as much time out of the office as you can to take on all the nearby treks; the owners particularly recommend roaming to Llyn y Fan Fawr lake on the long-distance Beacons Way trail that passes the park. Wander to one of the pubs a few minutes from the site too, pick up supplies at the village shop in Ynyswen or head to Ystradgynlais’s coffee shops.

A few bits and pieces to be aware of if you’re planning on staying here: the shower is coin operated; you'll need to bring your own drinking water; firewood/kindling is for sale on site (the owners are happy for you to bring your own); and there’s no commercial waste so please be prepared to take all rubbish home and leave the space as you find it.

Nice site in superb location, would visit again if walking in the area09/20/2022

-Jeremy (the owner) is a very nice man
-The shower was efficient, warm and clean
-The compost toilet is an excellent feat of engineering
    -The view was fantastic
-It's a superb location for walks up Black Mountain
    -Very spacious and secluded
    -Fairly level pitches (slightly sloped)

    Disliked:

-The local pubs are both rubbish (especially the beer they offer)
-I would love a proper fire pit, especially for the larger pitches like the one we booked (The View). Maybe our expectations were unrealistic but based on some of the descriptions and pictures on the site, we were hoping for more than a reconditioned steel beer keg sat on a slab of concrete. It was a makeshift log burner rather than a fire pit. We had dreams of sitting round a big fire cooking sausages over the flames... although Jeremy did provide us with a second beer keg when asked and we made do.

From the manager...

Hi guys
Really sorry about firepit and pictures on of old ones still on Pitchup (totally forgot to change the photo, thanks for heads up). The original fire pits burnt out after a few uses and are not sustainable. We were given the beer barrels and in the name of recycling & upcycling turned them into firepits which you can bbq on too, grills available on request.

Lovely meadow with a gorgeous view09/11/2022

We stayed on a nice and tranquil meadow with a gorgeous view and a 5 minutes walk to a pub. There are also few other areas you can book within the same compound, including more secluded, cosy hideouts. There's a number of beautiful hikes you can start right there or have a short drive to the most popular ones like Pen y Fan / Corn Du and Four Waterfalls. Far enough from the road to be sheltered from the traffic noise. The pitches well level and despite heavy rain one night we weren't flooded.
We were greeted by a very nice lady running this place who told us all the essential info and explained the secrets of using a compostable toilet ;) (regular toilet also available). The price was also very reasonable and most importantly you pay per a large pitch / person, rather than the tent, so it's also perfect for friends who not necessarily feel like squeezing into the same tent.

    Disliked:

I think both shower and a toilet could use few extra hooks you could hang your jacket / bag on.

Poor value for money. When compared with other campsites we have used on Pitchup this site is over priced. We won't be using this site again.

I visited the campsite while walking Beacon's Way and arrived in the pooring rain. Caroline was very friendly and offered me a cup of tea and, because of the bad weather, I was allowed to sleep in the caravan, which was way more comfortable than my tent :)

This is a lovely place to get away from city life for a spell, as there’s no phone reception and no Wi-Fi. It’s lush and green, and thoughtfully laid out. The owners are lovely, and happy to help out with whatever they can. If you’re into hiking this is a perfect spot with many trailheads nearby.
And the “loo with a view” is bloody brilliant.

Local attractions

It would be difficult to land on a better location for stints in south Wales than this one: set in the Brecon Beacons National Park, it’s a five-minute drive from the National Showcaves Centre for Wales and its scenic Craig-y-Nos park. You can also hop on a horse at the local stable or hire an ebike to explore the mountains.

Head to Henrhyd Falls (15 minutes' drive) to walk behind the wall of water; you might recognise this spot from several films, including Batman. The Wales Ape & Monkey Sanctuary is nearby as well, so drop in to see the primates before meeting the meerkats at Pen-y-Cae’s microzoo (five minutes).

Wanting more waterfalls? There are three to see while wending your way along a walking loop near Pontneddfechan (15 minutes), a popular part of the national park for pottering about.

Fan of fishing? Get the rod out at the River Tawe or by the Crai Reservoir (10 minutes). You could also angle down by the sea at the Gower’s gorgeous beaches near Swansea (an hour).

Must see

  • National Showcaves of Wales (1.7 kilometres)
  • Penderyn Distillery Visitor Centre (13.1 kilometres)
