Eco Camping Wales: Overview of Eco Camping Wales (photo added by manager on 03/17/2023)

General

  • Farm site with stunning 360-degree views of the Black Mountain
  • A five-minute drive from the National Showcaves Centre for Wales
  • On the Beacons Way trail in the Brecon Beacons National Park

Room to breathe and a friendly welcome – what more could you ask for from a scenic site like Eco Camping Wales in the Brecon Beacons’ gorgeous Glyntawe valley?

Well, 360-degree views of the spectacular Black Mountain for starters. The environmentally friendly setup is another big bonus – the site channels cold mountain spring water into its hand-washing basins, for example (not for drinking, bring your own) – as is the back-to-nature feel (there are no concrete hardstandings or electric hook-ups here).

This Glamorgan site encourages open-fire cooking across most of the grounds (bring reusable barbecues/firepits and raise them high off the ground, please) and phone reception is limited – so you can gleefully tell work they won’t be able to get in touch.

Try to get as much time out of the office as you can to take on all the nearby treks; the owners particularly recommend roaming to Llyn y Fan Fawr lake on the long-distance Beacons Way trail that passes the park. Wander to one of the pubs a few minutes from the site too, pick up supplies at the village shop in Ynyswen or head to Ystradgynlais’s coffee shops.

A few bits and pieces to be aware of if you’re planning on staying here: the shower is coin operated; you'll need to bring your own drinking water; firewood/kindling is for sale on site (the owners are happy for you to bring your own); and there’s no commercial waste so please be prepared to take all rubbish home and leave the space as you find it.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

A charge of £1.00 ($1.66) applies for the use of the shower.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Bookings must not be for more than 7 consecutive nights.

Units longer than 6 metres are not allowed.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality flashlight with them as parts of the park are unlit.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

There are no garbage cans onsite: all garbage will need to be taken home with you.

Open fires are not permitted on the Meadow and Church fields.

Very basic and rustic campsite with a tonne of open space and privacy10/24/2023

This is a really unspoilt campsite. Huge areas of grass with small hardstanding for car or camper van. Host extremely accommodating and took his time to help us plan some walking. Weather curtailed our adventures so will have to come back again. Shower and toilet in block near the house. Basic but clean and functional. We felt like our site was extremely private and the view across the field to the beautiful oak tree asn small stream, little church with mountains beyond was blissful. Good base for black mountain and lovely country park just down the road- also easy to reach on foot.

    Disliked:

Not a dislike as such but would have been good to have area to wash dishes- did ours in the river.

The site is a rural site, tranquil and with beautiful views. Excellent hikes directly from the campsite and a pub just down the road. The shower is hot and clean. The owners are friendliness most helpful.

    Disliked:

We were alone on the site, so the one and shower was not a problem. In the height of season one shower could however be a problem. This is not a particularly cheap site, and admittedly in an area of outstanding beauty. I do wonder however if the price is really justified concerning the facilities available.

It’s advertised for camper vans but I would not recommend staying here if you are in a camper van. The pitch is just a field which would normally be ideal but the land the owner put us on very wet! It also had long grass and the water sat on the fields. The owner met us and said if it’s wet you’ll struggle to get off and I’ll have to tow you out!! He also said he didn’t want to be doing that in the morning so pitch next to road. We did pitch next to road but we still got stuck!! After much slipping and sliding and ripping up the field and covering our van in mud we managed to get out.

Magnificent views and deep countryside. great walks nearby. I liked the repurposed barrel fire pit.
The compost toilet was brilliant. I stayed on The Ledge pitch, which had plenty of space and a marvellous view.

    Disliked:

It would be good to have a couple of the premium pitches with electrical hookup for longer stays at this price. I only stayed one night though, so it was fine.

The location, the spectacular views (day and night), the facilities and the lovely owners. We had a wonderful time camping on the pond pitch within the trees, thank you J&C for having us :)
Also, the bus stop at the campsite entrance was very useful!

    Disliked:

Not a dislike but maybe useful - we misjudged some of our planned walking trails from the site, they took us much longer than planned due to the uphills and involved more walking on the road than expected. Make use of the bus.

  • Meadow Field primitive grass and earth tent campsite
  • Recommend to friends   Visit again
  • Liked:

It was nearly empty, which meant it felt nice and wild with views of mountains all round. It easy to find, just off the main road, but that did mean you could hear the traffic. There were people playing music loud into the night in another field but that’s to be expected in a touristic area. Our field (meadow) and neighbouring field (church) were silent with only 2 other tents.
The horse box composting toilet was brilliant. Our toddler thought it was a fantastic surprise.
The pub and walk right from the campsite was a great bonus meaning we didn’t need to do any extra driving once we had arrived.
I’d recommend to anyone who needs a basic pretty campsite near the road for logistics ease. It felt close to wild camping which is harder to do with babies and toddlers, so this is a great option.

    Disliked:

We didn’t check in or out as there were no staff, but I assume that’s fine since we booked and paid online!

Lovely wild-feeling site with plenty of spaces between pitches and large patches of long grass so it felt much nicer than just a field. Friendly owners, compost loo in the horse box was fun! Great spot to access the hills and the Beacons Way.

    Disliked:

It’s near a fairly busy road which was a shame, so it didn’t feel quite as peaceful and isolated as the pictures look, but it was a great spot to base myself for a couple of days.

Local attractions

It would be difficult to land on a better location for stints in south Wales than this one: set in the Brecon Beacons National Park, it’s a five-minute drive from the National Showcaves Centre for Wales and its scenic Craig-y-Nos park. You can also hop on a horse at the local stable or hire an ebike to explore the mountains.

Head to Henrhyd Falls (15 minutes' drive) to walk behind the wall of water; you might recognise this spot from several films, including Batman. The Wales Ape & Monkey Sanctuary is nearby as well, so drop in to see the primates before meeting the meerkats at Pen-y-Cae’s microzoo (five minutes).

Wanting more waterfalls? There are three to see while wending your way along a walking loop near Pontneddfechan (15 minutes), a popular part of the national park for pottering about.

Fan of fishing? Get the rod out at the River Tawe or by the Crai Reservoir (10 minutes). You could also angle down by the sea at the Gower’s gorgeous beaches near Swansea (an hour).
