General

  • Set in the lush Cwm Bychan valley between Harlech and Barmouth
  • Peaceful setting with direct access to the Ardudwy Way
  • Five-acre site with loads of open space for play

‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,’ some folk say. On the other hand, some other folk think, why not constantly improve an already winning formula? No prizes for guessing which of these two philosophies the genial folks at Dinas Caravan Park and Camping in Gwynedd subscribe to… having made their popular site even better by adding a canoe hire available on the park’s own private lake (or just bring your own inflatable boat to bob about in).

Dinas is set in the lush Cwm Bychan valley between Harlech and Barmouth and is a peaceful park covering five acres. Campfires are allowed and metal fireboxes are also available for a small fee; you can buy wood on site (please don’t bring your own or gather firewood from around the park).

Kids will love swinging in the trees at Dinas – no, not Tarzan-like but on the tree swings – and there’s loads of open space for ball games and general wheeling about as well as scope to burrow into dens among the woodland.

Other facilities at this always-improving site include a refurbished toilet block with free hot showers, a launderette with new coin-operated tumble dryer, covered dishwashing sinks and a freezer for ice packs. If you manage to venture off site, the staff can supply leaflets on the many walking trails round and about; there are ancient oak woodlands within two minutes of the park, and beaches within a few miles.

The site is in beautiful countryside, the landscape is stunning. The owner met us at the gate and welcomed us onto the site, giving us the choice of two pitches (we had opted for the electrical hook-up). The site has a number of swings in the trees that run between the two fields, it was hard to get our daughter off the swings and out of the trees! We had a wonderful time, the weather wasn't great but that didn't stop any of the children on the site having a great time together in amongst the trees. The toilet/shower block was basic but it was kept as clean as possible by the owner, who was constantly cleaning up. Due to the bad weather there was a fair bit of mud tracked in by campers but the owner seemed to spend all her time making sure the campers were happy. The fire pits were a lovely touch, the owner came around every evening to sell the logs and it was wonderful to see all the campfires dotted around the site each evening. I want to say a big thank you to the owner of Dinas campsite, she truly worked non-stop and it was a fantastic holiday.

Loved this camp site. It was in the middle of beautiful countryside in the middle of no where!!! So quiet and perfect for the children as it was so small. The children loved to play in the wood and the trees at the side of the site. Being able to give them the freedom to play with other children in the mornings and evenings because it was so safe really did make their holiday!!! This really was a family campsite we were looking for. It was basic but that didn’t matter to us!! The tent pitches were big and everyone had their own wooden picnic bench. You were able to hire fire pits which were amazing especially for roasted marshmallows. We had a fantastic holiday and I will definitely be back!!!

Lovely family campsite. Nice setting, sheltered pitches. Our kids at 8 and 11 years old spent a lot of time independently exploring the wooded area on the site, playing on the swings there with lots of other kids and going on adventures. They made some lovely friends. A walk around the lake and up the hill was a delight. Husband especially enjoyed making a campfire every night! Picnic tables and having a fire meant that we sat outside all the time rather than retreating inside the tent. Site well situated for visiting other attractions in area. Highly recommend.

We loved the location - peaceful and picturesque - far from road noise, yet a short drive to Harlech, beaches and all the attractions of the local area.

We camped on a flat clear pitch in near the woods. Idyllic spot with views of the mountains. Other campers quiet, but friendly. Washing facilities are basic, but all you need, clean with hot water. Allows camp fires (sells wood and kindling).

The site is wonderful for all ages. My daughter (9) made friends and loved the swings. We will be back!

Directions

At the centre of Llanbedr village, turn off the A496 at the Victoria Inn signposted Cwm Nantcol and Cwm Bychan. Shortly after the village of Gwynfryn you will arrive at a junction. Take the left fork signposted Cwm Bychan. Soon the road becomes narrower. In just over a mile, ignore the turning for Harlech and continue towards Cwm Bychan. Approximately 200m further along you will arrive at a sharp 90º right-hand bend: do not follow the bend, but continue straight ahead for another 200m to arrive at Dinas Caravan Park and Campsite.

Satnav
The grid reference for Dinas Caravan Park and Campsite is 611290. Please note that many of the on-line post code locators and satnav systems give incorrect locations for Dinas postcode LL45 2PH and as a result you will be taken on a long detour to the wrong location along a windy single lane track with many gates to open and close, therefore please use the directions given above. The Ordnance Survey maps show the location of Dinas correctly.

Local attractions

The area around Dinas is tramping terrain: this section of north Wales is riddled with walks for all abilities including the Wales Coastal Path. Dinas is also the only local site with direct access to the new Ardudwy Way, a 23-mile tramp between Barmouth and Llandecwyn with sea and mountain views.

Llandanwg beach is under three miles away; this sheltered part of shore can land anglers mackerel, flatfish and bass and is popular with other watery types for windsurfing and kayaking. And it’s probably the only beach in the world with a 13th-century church hidden among its sand dunes...

To the north of the beach on Tremadog Bay seaside town of Harlech with medieval Harlech Castle. The castle is crammed with history and was the site of the longest siege in British history during the Wars of the Roses; be sure and lustily sing ‘Men of Harlech’ as you stomp around.

At nearby Barmouth, catch a pedestrian ferry at the quay and join up with the narrow-gauge Fairbourne & Barmouth Railway at Barmouth ferry station for a two-mile trip through top Snowdonia scenery.
