General

  • Set in the lush Cwm Bychan valley between Harlech and Barmouth
  • Tent pitches and static caravans in peaceful park
  • Direct access to Ardudwy Way

‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,’ some folks say. On the other hand, some other folks think, why not constantly improve an already winning formula? No prizes for guessing which of these two philosophies the genial folks at in Gwynedd subscribe to…having made their popular site even more New and Improved for 2012 by adding a canoe hire available on the park’s own private lake (or just bring your own inflatable boat to bob about in).

Dinas is set in the lush Cwm Bychan valley between Harlech and Barmouth and is a peaceful park covering five acres for just a handful of tent pitches and static caravans. Take your pick from a pitch in the lower field beside the stream or the upper among the oak trees; electric hook-up is available in the lower field.

Each spacious pitch comes with its own picnic table and metal fireboxes to use for your campfire are also available for a small fee and you can buy wood on site (please don’t bring your own or gather firewood from around the park).

Kids will love swinging in the trees at Dinas – no, not Tarzan-like but on the tree swings – and there’s loads of open space around the pitches for ball games and general wheeling about as well as scope to burrow into dens among the woodland.

Other facilities at this always-improving site include a refurbished toilet block with free hot showers, a laundrette with new coin-operated tumble drier, covered dishwashing sinks and a freezer for ice packs. If you manage to venture off site, the staff can supply leaflets on the many walking trails round and about; there are ancient oak woodlands within two minutes of the park, and beaches within a few miles.

Dinas Campsite feels like it's in the middle of nowhere, so peace and tranquillity reign supreme.
The owners are absolutely lovely and very friendly.
Fire pits are included on every pitch and you can light your very own fire - it's real camping.
You also get a picnic table with benches at your pitch.
There are swings in the wooded area for children to play. It's great for children to go off and explore by themselves - they're only a few metres away from the tents, in the wooded area - but to them they have freedom.
It's not far from Harlech or Barmouth and the views are fabulous from Dinas point.
The pot wash area - proper sinks, covered area - hot water - what more do you need?!
Although Dinas is on a slope, each of the pitches are pretty flat.
The pitches are a really good size.
The nearby village is really pretty too and got a lovely inn and bakery.
The bin area is really well ordered, it's easy to recycle there.
The owners bring round the firewood to purchase - if you need it, in the evenings.
    Not an overpriced campsite.
Loved the 3 chickens wondering about their business.

    Disliked:

The midges - although what do you expect in a wooded area in the UK?! Next time I will remember insect repellent!
The wash block. Don't get me wrong, I saw it being cleaned every day - and it was meticulously clean too - straight after, but it didn't take very long for it to look a bit unkempt mainly because it seemed to attract lots of insects (not surprising given that it was in the middle of a wooded area and the weather was damp). There was only 1 family room although it's not a big site, and in the main ladies section, there are only 2 toilets, 2 sinks and 1 shower. It's functional and very basic. I think if budget would allow the owners to revamp at some point, perhaps rejig the arrangement a bit. I think that the showers would be better off with a little dry area behind the shower to dry off - think how swimming pool showers and changing areas are designed (just not quite so big!). That said, it was perfectly sufficient. If there is no budget to upgrade, please could you invest in one of those UV insect light zappers?

Despite the weather it was still very nice holiday. We were at the same site with my wife 3 years ago and this year went there with our 3 kids and all of them loved it. We liked everything about the site, we knew it's very basic but that's the reason we went there in first place, kid's enjoyed swings and walks near the stream but the most important thing was camp fire. When we came it was storm predicted for the same evening/night and Einir was very helpful with choosing pitch for the tent, like last time we stayed she will answer all the questions and will give plenty advice. Best way to describe our stay at Dina's is when we had to leave all 3 our kid's started crying and didn't want to leave and for us it was very nice to switch off our phones during the stay and relax. We will be back again for sure. Big thanks to Einir and her family for maintaining this site.

    location, price, pitch, owners.

Ideal for walking into countryside with stunning views of both the mountains and the sea.

Only a few miles drive to the local towns/beaches but place is very secluded, the only noise you get is from other guests or the occasional military jet. Very dark at night so great also for star gazers.

A few (5?) chickens roam the site freely but did not cause any nuisance, indeed they added another dimension to our holiday.

Ability to have camp fires in the evening was another bonus.

Have said we would not stay again but agonised over this as VFM and location are really good but showering is poor. I would not be surprised if we did stay again if and when the time comes around again to visit this area.

    Disliked:

warm to cold showers, limited showering facilities. A new washroom block with additional showers/toilets and warmer showering water would really lift this site.

Wifi was inconsistent but maybe more a reflection of the area rather than just this site as signal overall was difficult to obtain.

Directions

At the centre of Llanbedr village, turn off the A496 at the Victoria Inn signposted Cwm Nantcol and Cwm Bychan. Shortly after the village of Gwynfryn you will arrive at a junction. Take the left fork signposted Cwm Bychan. Soon the road becomes narrower. In just over a mile, ignore the turning for Harlech and continue towards Cwm Bychan. Approximately 200m further along you will arrive at a sharp 90º right-hand bend: do not follow the bend, but continue straight ahead for another 200m to arrive at Dinas Caravan Park and Campsite.

Satnav
The grid reference for Dinas Caravan Park and Campsite is 611290. Please note that many of the on-line post code locators and satnav systems give incorrect locations for Dinas postcode LL45 2PH and as a result you will be taken on a long detour to the wrong location along a windy single lane track with many gates to open and close, therefore please use the directions given above. The Ordnance Survey maps show the location of Dinas correctly.

Local attractions

The area around Dinas is tramping terrain: this section of North Wales is riddled with walks for all abilities including the Wales Coastal Path, with Dinas the only site with direct access to the new Ardudwy Way, a 23-mile tramp between Barmouth and Llandecwyn with sea and mountain views. Clambering around the walks of the Rhinog Mountains is a more hamstring-stretching option, or closer to home there’s Dinas Rock to scale for panoramic views over the farm and across the mountains to the sea; keep your eyes peeled for buzzards and red kites overhead.

If you want to get sand between your toes, Llandanwg Beach is less than three miles away; this sheltered part of shore can land anglers mackerel, flatfish and bass and is popular with other watery types for windsurfing and kayaking. And it’s probably the only beach in the world with a thirteenth century church hidden among its sand dunes: St Tanwg is the patron saint of Llandanwg and is said to have founded the church in the fifth century. Take a trip to Shell Island too (Mochras) along the causeway at low tide for another sandy beach, swathes of wild flowers and, not surprisingly, shedloads of shells to find.

To the north of the beach on Tremadog Bay there’s the seaside town of Harlech with the medieval Harlech Castle. The castle is crammed with history and was the site of the longest siege in British history during the Wars of the Roses; be sure and lustily sing ‘Men of Harlech’ as you stomp around…

Beautiful Barmouth is also near Llandanwg – the beach lies between it and Harlech – and has slate-roofed mountain cottages and a gorgeous harbour as well as a large stretch of beach; there’s a fun fair from March to October and a children’s farm park eight miles north of the town. Catch a pedestrian ferry at the quay and join up with the narrow-gauge Fairbourne & Barmouth Railway at Barmouth Ferry Station for a two-mile trip through the Snowdonia scenery.

For puffing further afield, hop on the two trains of the Ffestiniog and West Highlands Railways, the oldest rail company in the world still with trains in operation; there’s a 13.5 mile trip from Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffestiniog and a 25 mile trip from Caernarfon both on offer, with some of the most spectacular scenery around. Subterranean scenery is a-plenty too: stop off at Blaenau Ffestiniog for underground adventures at the Llechwedd Slate Caverns.

Day trips from Dinas are as plentiful as the walks: two-wheelers can take the circular Mawddach Trail from Penmaenpool or Dolgellau, and there are the forest trails at Coed y Brenin for leafy and more adrenalin-filled riding; try The Cavity for a fully hair-raising experience. If you’re not bringing your own bike, the visitor centre here has bike hire as well as hot drinks and snacks for when you totter wobbily-legged back – wobbly legs may also occur if you try the popular Zip World Titan, Bounce Below or Llanbedr flight experience, all available nearby. For those who want to give the legs a real workout, why not take to Snowdon for some challenging climbs and where the best views around are guaranteed?
