  • Set in the lush Cwm Bychan valley between Harlech and Barmouth
  • Peaceful setting with direct access to the Ardudwy Way
  • Five-acre site with loads of open space for play
If you’ve been foraging around for a quiet break with heaps of gorgeous scenery, the name Hideaway in the Hills should speak for itself. No prizes for guessing where this friendly, remote site is based… it’s set in a lush valley. More specifically, it’s in the Cwm Bychan valley between Harlech and Barmouth. This is a peaceful park covering five acres, with basic facilities – it’s practically wild camping but with the added convenience of simple toilet and shower facilities, washing-up sinks and a freezer for ice packs. Even better for all of you adventurous types, the site hires out open Canadian canoes free of charge for paddles over the park’s own private lake (or just bring your own inflatable boat to bob about in). Kids will love swinging in the trees at the site – no, not Tarzan-like but on a basket swing – and there’s loads of open space for ball games and general wheeling about as well as scope to burrow into dens among the woodland. That’s on top of the oak woodland just outside of the pitches and the hills (if you’re up for a climb, that is). This is a quiet site, with just the soundtrack of pint-sized guests playing in high season. Outside of the summer holidays, it gets even more peaceful. Picnic benches have been handily provided for each pitch, with firepits and grills available for hire for a small charge and logs and kindling for sale on site too (please don’t bring your own or gather firewood from around the park). If you manage to venture off site, the staff can supply leaflets on the many walking trails round and about; there are ancient oak woodlands within two minutes of the park, and beaches within a few miles.

Powered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked We loved how remote and quiet it is. Stunning location with the little lake and the valley is beautiful. I found a couple of spots to get in the river. Spacious pitches with a bench and fire pit. The owner worked hard to chat and make sure everything was provided, even fairy liquid and sponges if you’d forgotten. Although the facilities were small, we never had a wait and it didn’t feel too busy. Pub and beach at the end of the room make it brilliant

Disliked Horse flies! Everywhere in the valley. I’m covered in bites so bring the bug spray. At least the warm weather meant fewer midges. But even then- so many birds and bats. I’ll put up with a few bites for a pristine bit of countryside. One of the kids also picked up a tiny tick from the bracken, but unfortunately this is more common everywhere.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked Exactly as described lovely hideaway in the hills. Friendly owners more than happy to recommend local walks. Great location lots of stuff to do nearby. I loved that you can do walks directly from the campsite. All round stunning scenery.

Disliked The only thing to mention is there was a lot of animal poo on the pitches. Although I appreciate that's hard to control. At least there's lots of wildlife!

This campsite was excellent. Lovely and quiet, great welcome from the owner…

Liked This campsite was excellent. Lovely and quiet, great welcome from the owner who works extremely hard at keeping the communal areas clean. Shower was great, lots of hot water and the same for washing up too. Would highly recommend.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked Booked for 4 nights but only stayed for 1! Would not recommend.

Disliked The access road leading up to the site is unsuitable for large or even medium sized cars. It’s a long single track road with bushes and thorns either side, because of this my car is now scratched on both sides. Nowhere on the advertisement does it tell you of this and the only email received is on the morning of the booking (when it’s non refundable). If we would have known about this beforehand we would have chosen not to stay here. The facilities also need attention; there is only one shower & toilet in the male block which is not feasible for the size of the site. Also my partner had noticed that the shower head was loose and had to screw this back on in order to get a shower. The facilities need to be cleaned more frequently with hand towels or paper being provided as the hand dryer is no use. Speaking to the owners was difficult as every time I went up the house/reception they were nowhere to be found.

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback.
We make our rural setting clear on the listing, which describes us as a “Hideaway in the Hills,” and provide a location map to help guests prepare. We advise using the Llanbedr route as it’s the shortest and most practical approach, with passing bays and a more gradual incline. The final stretch is single-track, but it’s well-travelled by vehicles of all sizes — including delivery vans, emergency services, tractors, and 10ft-wide static caravans — so it is suitable for cars. Understandably, country lanes aren’t to everyone’s taste, but they’re a part of the area’s character.

The hedgerows along the approach are the responsibility of the council which are trimmed in late June. The timing is intentional to support local wildlife during nesting season.

Our toilet block is simple, clean and functional, and it meets the model standards for our number of pitches. The shower head is a swivel design and not broken — though we’ve checked it to confirm it’s in good working order. The hand dryer, while not the most powerful, is operational and there are no plans to replace it. Cleaning is carried out regularly to maintain hygiene and comfort for guests.

While we’re not at reception full-time, we live on site and are typically around maintaining the grounds, cleaning, or assisting other guests.

We appreciate all feedback and continually strive to improve, but it’s worth noting that we currently have an overall score of 8.8 from over 110 reviews. Many guests praise the cleanliness of our facilities, the peaceful location, and the welcoming, informative atmosphere we aim to provide.

Route directions

There are three ways to reach Dinas; the site recommends that guests use the Llanbedr route. The final stretch is along a single track; you may need to reverse to a passing bay if traffic approaches from the other direction. From Llanbedr, turn off the A496 at the Victoria Inn and follow signs for Cwm Nantcol and Cwm Bychan for 2.5 miles. Ignore the turning for Harlech. When you arrive at the big Dinas Caravan Park and Camping sign, do not follow the bend, but continue straight ahead for another 200 meters to arrive at Dinas.

Local attractions

The area around Hideaway in the Hills is tramping terrain: this section of north Wales is riddled with walks for all abilities including the Wales Coastal Path. This is also the only local site with direct access to the Ardudwy Way, a 23-mile route between Barmouth and Llandecwyn with sea and mountain views. Llandanwg beach is under three miles away; this sheltered part of shore can land anglers mackerel, flatfish and bass and is popular with other watery types for windsurfing and kayaking. And it’s probably the only beach in the world with a 13th-century church hidden among its sand dunes... To the north of the beach on Tremadog Bay seaside town of Harlech with medieval Harlech Castle. The castle is crammed with history and was the site of the longest siege in British history during the Wars of the Roses; be sure and lustily sing ‘Men of Harlech’ as you stomp around. At nearby Barmouth, catch a pedestrian ferry at the quay and join up with the narrow-gauge Fairbourne & Barmouth Railway at Barmouth ferry station for a two-mile trip through top Snowdonia scenery.
