  • Quiet dog-friendly site by the Four Waterfalls in the Brecon Beacons
  • A 20-minute drive to the base of Pen Y Fan; another waterfall nearby
  • Wood available to buy for firepits; shops and pubs a short drive away
Whether you’re hunting down the Four Waterfalls or taking the scenic drive to the base of Pen Y Fan, your break in the Brecon Beacons National Park will be off to a splendid start with a stay at Bryn Bwch. This quiet, dog-friendly site is a great base from which to go waterfall spotting, as it’s next to the Four Waterfalls and the Sgwd Yr Eira Waterfall is within walking distance too… and as you might expect from a site in the national park, there are stunning views from this place. Dogs and children are very welcome to use the site as their base, so simply set down with all the gang in the large, well-maintained field (which has some level sections and some with slight gradients or inclines) and park next to your tent. On the facilities front, there are four toilets and two showers to go around. For anyone who wants to light up their own firepit in the evening, wood can be purchased from the bungalow when you check in. Ready to take on South Wales’ biggest mountain? The car park for routes up Pen Y Fan is 20 minutes’ drive away. It’s a fair way up to the top, so to pick up any snacks for the climb, you might want to stop by in Glynneath first. A 10-minute drive away from the site, this town has shops for picking up supplies along with pubs to reward your climbing efforts. When you're looking for a pub slightly closer by, there's also one five minutes' drive away from the site.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: Nice quiet campsite - just a large field really, with solar showers at one end and a washing up shack near the entrance. I believe there are toilets further down, but as I have my own facilities in my van, I did not go to investigate. The showers were very clean and with good water pressure. On arrival, I spoke to a charming young lady, who pointed out the facilities and informed me that bbqs and fires were allowed (on the ground even), and other than that I was left to my own devices. Exactly as I like camping to be! If and when I come back to the Brecon Beacons, I would certainly book to stay at Bryn Bwch again.

Disliked: My main reason for staying at Bryn Bwch was to visit the Four Waterfalls trail, and there is a path leading from the campsite to the trail. However, having walked it, I think that parking in the lower car park would have significantly shortened the walk.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely site and great location very picturesque near to lots amenities, local town 10 mins drive away with pubs and shops with Entrance to waterfall trek. Half way down another entrance to waterfalls with £5 car park fee for the day, walking distance to the camp , if you can manage the extra hike. Toilets were clean and not to far away bit as advised bring a torch. Ground had plenty of flat areas . Elle who came to great was very pleasant and welcoming. Washing facilities basic but had all that you required. Shower in the main toilets with hit water.

Disliked: There Thursday to Sunday, only the Sunday had hot water in the washing up area, which made it tough to wash up bbq stuff. No hot water in toilets to have a wash and didnt want to use showers ti just was face properly. Would had been fine if could use hot water kn washing up area as didn't need both but one or the other would had been better..

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: Friendly owners, Ellie was very knowledgeable of the local area. Location was perfect, able to walk directly to the four waterfall walk. Silent at night time. Clean facilities. White Horse Pub back down the hill was the nicest pub we’ve been to for a while - quality food and lovely staff. Small shop down the hill is cash only but so quaint and a lovely owner!

Disliked: Take spray for the midges! Not a fault at all, just advice…they are relentless! Nothing else was bad, positive vibes only!

Local attractions

Break into the Brecon Beacons however you please… taste the whisky from the copper-pot stills on a tour of Penderyn Distillery Visitor Centre (15 minutes' drive) perhaps? Grab a co-adventurer and strap yourselves in for a one or two-person zipwire ride from the tower of a former Colliery coal mining site at Zip World Tower (20 minutes)? Or board the Brecon Mountain Railway (40 minutes) and make your way into the mountains on the original mountain line? Mountain biking might make it onto your itinerary in these parts, as there are a couple of options within driving distance of the site. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a newbie or a pro at BikePark Wales (35 minutes), as there are lots of different forest trails. Dare Valley Country Park and Gravity Family Bike Park (35 minutes) is another good option for families, especially those who are new to the game. At this site, you’ll only be a short drive from the National Showcaves Centre for Wales (25 minutes). Here, kids are likely to love the lifesized dinosaurs and the caverns. Plus, there are lots of things to learn about the history of the dinosaurs and other cool parts of the past in the museum and Iron Age farm.
