Bryn Bwch: Site views

General

  • Quiet dog-friendly site by the Four Waterfalls in the Brecon Beacons
  • A 20-minute drive to the base of Pen Y Fan; another waterfall nearby
  • Wood available to buy for firepits; shops and pubs a short drive away

Whether you’re hunting down the Four Waterfalls or taking the scenic drive to the base of Pen Y Fan, your break in the Brecon Beacons National Park will be off to a splendid start from Bryn Bwch. This quiet, dog-friendly site is a great base from which to go waterfall spotting, as it’s next to the Four Waterfalls and the Sgwd Yr Eira Waterfall is within walking distance too… and as you might expect from a site in the national park, there are stunning views from this place.

Dogs and children are very welcome to use the site as their base, so simply set down with all the gang in the large, well-maintained and level-grounded field and park next to your tent. There are four toilets and two showers to go around. For anyone who wants to light up their own firepit in the evening, wood can be purchased from the bungalow when you check in.

When you’re ready to take on South Wales’ biggest mountain, the base of Pen Y Fan is 20 minutes’ drive away. It’s a fair way up to the top, so to pick up any snacks for the climb, you might want to stop by Glynneath first. A 10-minute drive away from the site, this town has shops to pick up supplies and pubs to pause by if you wish. When you're looking for a pub slightly closer by, there's also one five minutes' drive away from the site.

Cracking no nonsense Campsite in a stunning location near to the Four Waterfalls ,Ystradfelte , Aberdare and within spitting distance of the Brecon Beacons ..Very easy to book . I stayed for 1 night and arrived in the dark . Just beware that it is all grass and you might get stuck if it rains .The Farmer is on hand with his trusty tractor to pull you out if necessary . Park at the top by the entrance if its wet .

The location of the site is excellent and well in the wilds of the Beacons. Lovely rural location. Shower was hot. Facilities simple / functional.

    Disliked:

It would be a struggle to find a flat pitch if it were busy on the site. Equally only two washing up points neither with any hot water....and taps that were falling off. Travelling in October in poor weather meant no competition for facilities but I would say this may be a sticking point if the site were thriving. A consideration at the very least.

Good basic campsite with clean facilities.

This campsite is ideally located for Waterfall Country, a short walk from both the Four Waterfalls trail and the Elidir trail and I managed both on my weekend here. (Be a bit careful of some of the non-trail local footpaths as they aren't very well maintained.)

    Disliked:

Some of the plumbing is a work in progress but I was informed that it should be done by next summer.

Barking dogs video on Google maps review, I think the farm workers leave their dogs in the barn while they work. This is late into the evening. They barn non stop really loud. for such a quiet part of the country we don't want to hear the yap yap yap. The whole campsite is on a steep angle so you will need leveling gear. The campsite has one shower and toilet for each of the sex. Ok as long as it's not busy. The slope going to the toilet is really steep and slippery. Did not bother me, but may affect others who are less able. I normally wild camp in my van, wish I had and was about to leave but the dog did stop at bed time. Down the road is a nice layby by the phone box next to the grave yard.. quieter there than the barking campsite!

We had a great stay at Bryn Bwch. A perfect location with brilliant hiking from the campsite and other areas nearby and fantastic views aswell.
Our hosts were really friendly and accommodating and the facilities just what you need on a campsite - would definitely stay again and recommend to others.

    Disliked:

Not so much a dislike but hot water would be a great addition for the washing up area - although unstandable as to why not put in.

Local attractions

Break into the Brecon Beacons however you please… taste the spoils of the copper-pot stills on a tour around Penderyn Distillery Visitor Centre (15 minutes' drive) perhaps? Grab a co-adventurer and strap yourselves in for a one or two-person zipwire ride from the tower of a former Colliery coal mining site at Zip World Tower (20 minutes)? Or board the Brecon Mountain Railway (40 minutes) and make your way into the mountains on the original mountain line?

Mountain biking might make it onto your itinerary in these parts, as there are a couple of options within driving distance of the site. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a newbie or a pro at BikePark Wales (35 minutes), as there are lots of different forest trails. Dare Valley Country Park and Gravity Family Bike Park (35 minutes) is another good option for families, especially those who are new to the game.

At this site, you’ll only be a short drive from the National Showcaves Centre for Wales (25 minutes). Here, kids are likely to love the lifesized dinosaurs and the caverns. Plus, there are lots of things to learn about the history of the dinosaurs and other cool parts of the past in the museum and Iron Age farm.
