  • Quiet pitches on a 20-acre meadow bordered by woods and a stream
  • A five-minute drive from Aberystwyth and 10 minutes from Borth
  • Walk to Clarach Bay in 15 minutes along a footpath and lane
‘Our aim is to create a relaxing nature-focused environment’ say the folk at Nantcellan Barns – and they’ve certainly achieved that with their peaceful Ceredigion site, which is spread over a 20-acre meadow and bordered by a small stream and native woodlands. Much effort is going into improving this ex-dairy pastureland and managing the woodlands to create better habitats for native wildlife while also providing plenty of grazing for the resident working draft horses. Stays here go towards funding this work, so you can feel like you’re doing good while also staying in a fabulous rural spot. From this quiet family-friendly site it’s about a 15-minute walk along a footpath and lane to Clarach Bay for a sheltered sandy/shingle beach and seafront café bars serving up woodfired pizzas, fish and chips, coffees and cakes. And if you want to see more of Ceredigion’s wonderful coastline (and no doubt you will…) you can then pick up the coast path for strolls south towards Aberystwyth or north to Borth. Both of those places are great destinations for beaches, things to do and places to eat – if you’d rather drive straight there it’s about five minutes to Aberystwyth or 10 minutes to Borth. Beyond Borth is the Dyfi Biosphere, a protected natural landscape that’s well worth exploring. Alternatively, head inland to places like Nant y Moch for more walking and bike trail options. In keeping with their mission, the owners have kept the offerings here simple to avoid too much impact on the land, but guests will have access to showers, portable toilets and a washing-up area, and are welcome to bring barbecues or light campfires.

Meadow non-electric grass pitch

Liked: The area was clean. Showers and shelter nice touch.

Disliked: Distance to the beach- is 30 min slow walk on very busy road so you need to be careful. The portable toilets. Noisy road near by so not as quiet as expected.

Meadow non-electric grass pitch

Liked: The quietness, the simplicity, the location, the freedom, the ease of booking.

Disliked: Portaloo toilets are basic and wouldn't be to everyone's liking. The cleanliness of the partaloos has more to do with the campsite users than the campsite owner.

Meadow non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Love the chilled relaxing atmosphere of this back to basics campsite.

Disliked: This is our second stay and this time we were slightly disappointed not to be able to hire the fire pits and buy the logs, this was such a lovely touch we enjoyed last year and really missed this year.

Basic, could be charming if it weren't for the plastic porta-loos.

Meadow non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Open air showers and quiet rural location.

Disliked: Whilst we had booked for 2 nights, we left after one night. This was mainly due to the condition of the field and in-particular the slope to the bottom field. I fear that had we stayed any longer we would have been stuck (we only just got our van out with 2 attempts). I know we've had a lot of rain but this is Wales and it isn't entirely unexpected. The other issue for us was the use of plastic porta-loos. They are very unpleasant and were not in a good state - especially with the muddy approach to them. I would suggest that something similar to your excellent showers (composting toilets in a wooden hut for example) would be more fitting with the wild camping theme.

Meadow non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Not far out of Aberystwyth. Nice shelter area with cooking and group seating facilities. Basic open showers have some charm- but would not be pleasant on a cold or rainy day.

Disliked: The site is not as picturesque as the photos on line lead you to believe and the shower and toilet facilities are very basic. It was a very wet day when we arrived and we feared that we wouldn’t get out again from the pitches at the bottom of a long sloping field, so decided to stay up the top by the gravelled area. There was no sign of any staff so we were not confident of help being available if we did get stuck. This meant that we were subject to some traffic noise. This site compared badly to other pitches of similar price.

Meadow non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Shelter with kitchen. Great field for camping. Lovely view. Hot showers - no roof! Surprisingly refreshing. I hadn’t realised that normal showers are very stuffy by comparison. No frills but basic was what I wanted and the price is good.

Disliked: All good. No downside unless you are looking for luxury. The shelter/kitchen open on on side is really pleasant. You can choose to eat al fresco or with some shade. We had a great bbq.

Bell tent (basic)

Liked: Close to the beach. Great location, central to a few beaches.

Disliked: Nowhere to dispose rubbish. Quiet times we’re not adhered to, I had to ask neighbours to be quiet at 23.30 as we could not sleep. Could do with more facilities i.E no fire pit or table and chairs, a bench would have been nice.

Local attractions

It’s likely that you’ll be popping to Aberystwyth (five minutes’ drive) for supplies – but don’t limit your outing to just the shops, as this coastal town also has a castle and museum to visit and the funicular Cliff Railway to ride. You can also board the Vale of Rheidol Railway here for a trip to the Devil’s Bridge waterfalls. Elsewhere along the coast it’s worth visiting Borth (10 minutes) at low tide to see the petrified forest, or heading a little further along the coast for a day in Aberaeron (half an hour), often described as one of the prettiest seaside locations in Wales. New Quay (45 minutes) should be on the cards for dolphin-spotting boat trips too. Back on land, there’s more wildlife to see at RSPB Ynys-hir nature reserve (20 minutes) or Bwlch Nant yr Arian Forest (20 minutes), which has walking and bike trails as well as a red kite feeding centre where you can see the big birds up close as they swoop in for their lunch.
