  • Small family-run Perthshire site in the shadow of Schiehallion
  • Aberfeldy 15 minutes' drive away; half an hour to Pitlochry
  • Well-stocked shop and cosy café on site, plus launderette
The family that run Glengoulandie Camping and Caravanning describe their Perthshire surroundings as ‘glorious’… and even a quick scan of the pics and the list of what's nearby will no doubt have you nodding in agreement. For starters, this small-scale site is pretty much next door to Dun Coillich, with the peak of Schiehallion rising behind for a spectacular backdrop to your stay. Lovely Loch Tay is about six miles away, and the site is surrounded by several patches of the Tay Forest Park. Beyond all that, there are several more lochs dotted around, and the park is roughly halfway between the Cairngorms National Park and Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park (both about half an hour's drive away). All of this, of course, means that this is a splendid base for outdoor adventures, be it hiking, cycling, fishing or climbing that gets your vote. Plenty of other Perthshire attractions are close by, too – including the pretty towns of Aberfeldy (15 minutes’ drive) and Pitlochry (half an hour) and historic buildings like Castle Menzies and Scone Palace. Back at base, there’s a good cluster of facilities to make your stay nice and easy – these include a launderette, a chemical disposal point, a washing-up area and bathrooms with toilets and showers. The shop is open daily in high season – selling bottled gas, camping kit and food/hygiene essentials – as is the cosy café, serving up hot and cold drinks, cakes, ice creams and other tasty treats.

Local attractions

No doubt the scenery around the site will have you itching to get out for a walk – and that's easily done, whether you want to take a stroll around the neighbouring deer park or scramble up the slopes of Schiehallion (accessed via the trails around Dun Coillich). A little further afield, you can clamber up Ben Lawers (half an hour’s drive), the tenth-highest of the munros, or head into Tay Forest Park for places like Queen's View (20 minutes), with a stunning vista across Loch Tummel. Down at Kenmore (15 minutes), on the banks of Loch Tay, you can take a scenic boat trip or hire your own boat to explore Perthshire’s largest loch at your leisure. Activity centres in Aberfeldy (15 minutes) can sort you with more adventurous pursuits like rafting and canyoning if you prefer. Got something gentler in mind? Take yourselves instead to 16th-century Castle Menzies (10 minutes), elegant Blair Castle & Gardens (35 minutes) or the former crowning place of Scottish kings at Scone Palace (an hour). Cluny House Gardens (15 minutes) is also lovely for a stroll – or you can sample a few sips of the good stuff at Dewar's Aberfeldy Distillery (15 minutes).
