General

  • Quiet campsite five miles from Edinburgh Airport
  • Shopping locally at Livingston Designer Outlet
  • Next to a country park and the Union Canal

East Calder is calling – and how easily accessible it all is. The county's Linwater Caravan Park is within a five-mile drive from Edinburgh Airport (nip up for the weekend, we say), and is next to the trunk roads of the M8 and M9 – we also say stop over here on your way to and fro north or south.

But you'd also be well placed to stay a bit longer. Linwater's in a countryside location, right next to Almondell and Calderwood Country Park and the Union Canal (we say towpath strolls) and is also a short drive from the Pentland Hills Regional Park. The Edinburgh International Climbing Arena is only a mile away.

All at Linwater is ably run by Katie and Alaistair, who've added a toilet block including a disabled loo, showers, a dishwashing area, laundry facilities and waste disposal for tourers and motorhomes.

Great dog walking to canal from site, all off road.
    Really liked this site.

Noise from aircraft, thankfully not through the night, but from 7.00am onwards, vey frequent and quite noisy. Similarly road behind camp site gets busy with lorries delivering to new building site further up the road

Perfect hosts. We arrived after dark and in poor weather, and were met promptly with a friendly greeting and shown to our pitch.
Very helpful when I rang for advice on the Park and Ride (which is height restricted to 1.9m at many locations) And again when we ran out of gas. We arrived back late again and a cylinder was waiting at reception for us.

Handy for Park and ride into Edinburgh, a tram ride which far exceeded our expectations - return tram was £3.20 each.

Location is remi rural, with easy access to everything you would want around a city, in Scotland.

It would be unfair of me to rate the site high or low as we did not use the facilities available, we prefer using our motorhome. The pitch was level, solid and drained well despite nature's best efforts to flood us out. TV and mobile reception were fine (Three) although not in the control of the site owners, is good to know.

    Disliked:

Not in the control of the site owners...
but Edinburgh international airport is only 3 miles away and jets were every 3 minutes when we arrived on a Friday night. It eased off considerably over the weekend. For some of the time the jets were drowned out by high winds and driving rain - but it is mid December in Scotland so quite normal.
We are from a very quiet rural town and are used to quiet. If this sort of thing does not bother you, you will be fine, otherwise it might be a consideration.

None of this would stop us booking there again!

Hello Zoe
Thanks for your review and feedback. I am so pleased that you liked the service you received but sad to hear that you didn't like the facilities. We provide kettles for all of our pods and the campers kitchen has worktop space, a microwave, hobs and sinks - all of which are provided free of charge. It also has seating and a cupboard with lots of spare things for guests to use if they forget things including saucer pots which can be used by guess to boil water on the hobs provided. We have tried to keep the facilities simple, given that it is a campers kitchen and also to assist our staff in keeping it clean. Reception does have a coffee machine with hot water available if people wish to use it. There are extraction fans which can be turned on when people are cooking to take away any cooking smells. The bins are emptied regularly and the kitchen cleaned every day.

Hi Krystle
Thank for taking the time to review the site and for your feedback. I am pleased you liked the layout and location of our amenities. We provide all guests with an arrivals sheet when they check in which has a map of site and walking routes from site to enjoy. These all start at the back where our dog walk is and provide some great views and access to the country park and local canal.

From the manager...

Hi rebecca
Thanks for taking the time to review the site and for your feedback. I'm pleased you liked it. Sadly wifi is not our strong point on site and we are looking at ways to improve this in the absence of BT open reach getting fibre to us any time soon. In the mean time we recommend that customers use the campers kitchen for a better signal which is situated next to the router and booster.

Local attractions

Linwater Caravan Park's locale means you're well set for both countryside and city days, or to break up a journey on your way north or south.

Around the area, a mile away in a disused quarry is the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena, with the biggest indoor climbing wall in the world (well worth tackling for the boasting rights gained for afterwards, say we). The towpath walks of the Union Canal are nearby and the shows and exhibitions of the Royal Highland Showground are within four miles.

You can also easily drive to the Kelpies, the biggest horsey structures on the planet, and to the Falkirk Wheel, the boat lift connecting the Union and the Forth and Clyde canals.

Must see

  • Edinburgh Zoo (6.7 miles)
  • Linlithgow Palace (7.9 miles)
  • Royal Scottish Academy (9.1 miles)
