  • Sea-view touring site on the banks of Loch Ryan
  • A 10-minute drive from Stranraer and Cairnryan ferry port
  • Play park and laundry on site; dogs welcome
Gallivant to the Gaelic shores around Ryan Bay Caravan Park for a dose of brisk Scottish air so plentiful that you and your wee ones (and your dog, if you've brought one) will most likely be zonked out night after night… Pitches here are well placed for taking in the bonny backdrop of Loch Ryan, for scenic saunters along Scotland's west coast and for jaunts to the pretty villages of Portpatrick, Glenluce and Kirkcudbright. A 10-minute drive will take you down to Stranraer for restaurants, shops and other urban amenities, or up to Cairnryan to board a ferry bound for the shores of Northern Ireland, a mere 20 miles away. Day looking a little 'dreich'? (What a splendid word for summing up damp, grey climes.) Use it as an excuse (as if you needed one) to take a whisky tour – or stick about on site to admire the sea views. Other facilities on site include an outdoor play area to aid with that plan to tire out the tiddlers. Guests at the park also have access to free heated showers, a covered dishwashing area and Elsan and waste disposal points. There's also a laundry on site for guests’ use and the park is kept safe and secure with CCTV coverage.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: The owner contacted us by telephone to ask what time we expected to arrive. We were on the ferry crossing from Larne, Northern Ireland. We said we thought about 6pm and he told us to make ourselves at home at any of the touring pitches that were free. It is a really peaceful place on the banks of Loch Ryan, although very close to the road, but that wasn't a problem for us.

Disliked: Nothing really not to like.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: The site was quiet ( as off peak), clean facilties, friendly welcome by fellow campers and also by the owners. Great selection of touring campervan spaces to choose from all with a view of the loch. Nice evening walk up to see the animals and along the loch shore. Out son liked the kids play area. Perfect location for us to catch the ferry to Northern Ireland the next day.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Friendly welcome by staff. Good pitches with EHU, water and grey water drain. Very clean facilities. Nice view over the bay and walk along it from the campsite. Animals onsite as well as 'fairypod' chalets which children would love. Extremely good value.

Disliked: No recycling bins?!

Local attractions

Castle Kennedy's gardens (10 minutes' drive) are packed with a bountiful array of plants and wildlife to spy – get snug in the bird hides to see what you can see. Kids can dash about beneath the 20 towering and ancient ‘Champion Trees’ and there’s a right royal time to be had exploring the ruins of the sixteenth-century castle. Sea lovers should certainly skedaddle to Scotland’s most southerly point, the Mull of Galloway (45 minutes’ drive). Climb the 26m-high lighthouse and visit the engine room exhibition to have all your questions answered by the experts. The surroundings are a Site of Special Scientific Interest and RSPB reserve, so when you’re not mulling over Mull’s scenery, you may spot the likes of roe deer, brown hare, guillemots and puffins. For foodies, The Cocoabean Company chocolate factory is about an hour’s drive east, with kids’ workshops and play areas alongside a swathe of sweet treats. About 45 minutes away is Galloway Smokehouse (in Wigtown Bay) for top-notch smoked Scottish salmon and trout. If you’re on the way back from the smokehouse, Bladnoch Whiskey Distillery’s shop is enroute and it’d be rude not to pop in for a sample of Scotland’s finest to take home…
