  • Family-friendly park with spectacular Solway Firth views
  • Kids' and teens' clubs, soft play, amusements and outdoor playgrounds
  • Showbar, bar-restaurant, takeaway and 25-metre indoor pool with flume
Northerners, fear not: southern-ness is not a prerequisite to enjoyment of a stay at Southerness Holiday Park at the foot of the Galloway Hills; the superb sea views and great facilities on site should please all comers. The pitches at this family-friendly park look out over the windswept beauty of the Solway Firth towards the English Lake District; and the surrounding countryside is teeming with wildlife, from the tiny creatures that inhabit the rockpools on the neighbouring beach to the great stags stalking the Galloway Forest Park further inland. Amphibian admirers will be interested to know too that the site is next door to Scotland’s largest breeding colony of Natterjack toads… When it comes to your own wee beasties, Southerness serves up a generous dollop of fun for kids too: buzzing clubs catering for the very small to hulking teens; an indoor pool, a flume, fountains and toddler pool (and a Jacuzzi for the grownups); a soft play area; crazy golf; amusements; outdoor playgrounds – plus of course the lively schedule of evening entertainment for the whole family in the Sunset Showbar. There’s a good choice of menu options in the bar-restaurant, as well as fresh Costa coffee; or you can opt for a takeaway if you just want to chill out in your own space and admire the views. There’s free wifi in designated areas of the site.

What customers say

This campsite offers spacious pitches, convenient access to the beach, and excellent on-site facilities, including a pool and entertainment complex, popular with families. Staff are consistently praised for their friendliness and helpfulness. While most facilities are clean, some reviews mention dated areas and occasional issues with shower pressure or cleanliness. Some visitors found pitches close together and noted noise disturbances and high prices for food and drinks.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Had amazing time with our kids very quiet at this time of year for tents, great service when I asked to move to a certain pitch as we wouldn't fit in between the tents that were there and they changed it no problem, especially as the rest of the tent pitches were empty.
Lovely walks only 15 minutes drive away

Disliked No baby swings available for younger kids at all 3 parks on site are suitable for older children. Also would be better if certain parts of the indoor entertainment area where dog friendly.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked A male worker noticed us arrive and directed us to our pitch. He gave us advice on which way to park to avoid the wind. He was very helpful. The pitch site was quiet with lots of spaces available so initially I thought if anyone comes after us theres plenty of space and that we would not be overcrowded.

Disliked However after putting up our awning and setting down with a drink another campervan arrived. I thought surely not! Although the grass pitches were almost empty apart from a few parked around the perimeter of the site. They assigned the van the pitch right beside us. Honestly they could've given them a space anywhere, giving them and us space but no they put them right beside us. I know the site is for families but the children cried from the moment they arrived all evening and during the early hours of the morning. I'm sure they would've preferred to be further away from us too and it's definitely not their fault as childen will be children. I would've asked to be moved but we had battled with the wind and had only just settled. If we knew that our sleep would be broken then we would've asked to be moved. I had very fond childhood memories and was eager to show my husband but after this experience I'm not sure I will be able to convince him to visit again. I suppose the main dislike is that I felt it was very unnecessary to put them right beside us especially with lots of other pitches available. I never do a review like this so I hope it is more like feedback for the park and they consider how they can use the available space sensibly.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked The man who oversees the camping and touring section was very nice and helpful and allowed use to cover more than one pitch as the allocated pitches are to small.

Disliked The pitches are to small and to close together even a family tent without a car would struggle to use a single pitch

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Great location (as we were on SWC 300 stayed one night only). Loved access to the beach. Showers and toilets excellent. Site was very quiet but it was very early in the season.

Disliked Pitches a bit close together and on the small side.

Local attractions

Assuming the weather is kind, the area surrounding Southerness Holiday Park is tiptop for anyone looking for an active holiday; do your own thing or shake off the cobwebs and try something new at one of the excellent activity centres in the Dumfries and Galloway region. Golfers are in for a particular treat, given the enormous choice of excellent courses nearby (the closest championship course is on the doorstep, in Southerness). If you fancy getting out and about, there’s a plethora of attractions to choose from: tickle your taste buds with a trip to the Cocoa Bean Factory or nearby ice cream factory; rattle around on the barrel train at Mabie Farm Park, a great value attraction packed with activities to keep the kids entranced all day; ramble around the romantic ruins of Sweetheart Abbey; clamber around a couple of castles, or visit the Robert Burns Centre in Dumfries. Or you could head to one of Dumfries and Galloway’s 'themed' towns: Wigtown for bookish types, Castle Douglas for foodies, or the artists’ town of Kirkcudbright.
