Small, dog-friendly site in the Southern Uplands of Scotland

Longing to stow yourself away in Scotland’s Southern Uplands for a while? You’ll have plenty of time for walking, recharging and other simple pleasures at Bush of Ewes. This dog-friendly site is set in a walkers’ haven, right at the start of the nine-mile Meikledale walk. Other hiking areas in the vicinity include the prehistoric trail at Loch Hill (five minutes’ drive) and the Langholm Hills (10 minutes). Rise and shine, fry an egg over the firepit and then take yourself for a little paddle in the river to really wake yourself up. Birds and other wildlife are frequent visitors at this peaceful site, so keep an eye out as you go along. Facilities on site include toilets and a shower. You might want to track down a Scottish castle or make your way to Carlisle (45 minutes) for a spot of sightseeing. The Lake District National Park is around an hour’s drive away too, if you fancy a day out by the lakes. The site sits on the A7, so getting about will be easy, and you won’t necessarily have to rely on your car, either, since there’s a bus stop right outside. The 95 bus goes to Langholm village (10 minutes), where there’s a small shop, a fishing lake and a pub/restaurant. Further out, Hawick (25 minutes) has a golf course, leisure centre, shops and local museum, while Canonbie (20 minutes) has a cinema and pretty stretch along the River Esk.

Liked: A lovely quiet site. Owners were lovely. Enjoyed being surrounded by the sheep and goats.
Facilities were basic but clean and good. If you just wanted a quiet night in nature without being too much in nature, this is a great site. We will be back.

Liked: This site is a credit to the young family that own and run it. great value for money and the pitches are very generous in size. The location and views are spectacular. Having the sheep,goats,pigs and chickens is a bonus. Also you are encouraged to go in with the animals even with a dog ( on a lead!) To walk along the river which is very pretty.
A very no fuss enjoyable site.

Liked: We liked the friendly welcome, the spaciousness of the pitch and site, all the farm animals doing their thing in the next field (part of the same site), the chance to have a fire - all just very easy and relaxed.

Disliked: A suggestion rather than a dislike: toilet paper and paper towels ran out overnight. I'm sure the proprietors would have happily sorted it but obviously nobody wanted to wake them up early in the rain.

Liked: Everything on site, nice that it is reasonably small so quite quiet. good sized pitches in a peaceful setting, campfires allowed, kids loved the farm animals. Nice and simple camping. Everything you need is just a short drive to Langholm. Good base for exploring hadrians wall or nearby castles. Other reviews complain about the road noise or river or facilities, but these weren’t an issue at all for us. Will definitely stay again.

Liked: Het prachtige uitzicht en de uitlaat plek voor de honden. De boerderij dieren en de vriendelijke beheerder. Grote vlakke staanplaatsen. De prijs van de overnachting.

Disliked: Met de A7 weg die vlak langs de camping loopt. Hier dendert de hele dag en ook ‘‘s nachts veel verkeer langs richting Edinburgh en Carlisle. Omdat de stroomaansluitingen alleen daar zijn moet je met de caravan daar gaan staan. Hoef je geen stroomaansluiting dan kan je op plaatsen gaan staan die veel verder van de A7 zijn. Daar heb je geen last van het verkeer. Misschien een tip om daar stroompunten aan te leggen zodat je kunt kiezen waar je wilt staan. De faciliteiten zijn ronduit aan een upgrade toe. Eén afdakje waaronder je kon afwassen. Eén douche voor de hele camping. Heel primitief allemaal. Geen wasmachine of droger. Overvolle container met blikjes en twee met papier en afval.

From the manager: Thank you for your review, we apologise you did not enjoy your stay with us, we are moving all the electric pitches up into the camping field in the very near future so all the pitches will be away from the road, we do not advertise as anything we are not, we are a small site of just 30 pitches we clearly state we have 2 toilets and 1 shower these will hopefully be upgraded in the future but moving the electric pitches is our priority, the new washing up area is a well sheltered area which is adequate to wash up, we do not provide a washing machine or a dryer as we are a small site.

Only stayed one night but would certainly stay again if in that area

Local attractions

The city of Carlisle (45 minutes’ drive) has a well-preserved castle that must have seen some serious action during its centuries-old life in this border city. Other attractions include a stretch of Hadrian’s Wall and a medieval cathedral. After all that sightseeing, take a rest in one of several green areas along the River Eden. For outdoor activities such as watersports, cycling and horseriding, you can make a beeline for Kielder Water and Forest Park (50 minutes). There are also wooded walks, plus stargazing events organised by Kielder Observatory and birdwatching (ospreys nest here). At the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (about an hour), you can admire the mudflats in the Inner Solway Firth, stretch out on the sand dunes at Mawbray Banks or check out the boggy pools at Drumburgh Moss, which are visited by curlews, geese and skylarks, depending on the time of year.

Arrivals and departures

Late arrivals must notify the park as soon as possible. Your booking will be held for 24 hours. After this period the management reserves the right to relet your unit.
No refunds/discounts for inclement weather, late arrivals or early departures.
Units will be allocated on arrival.

Dogs

Dogs must be kept on leads and supervised at all times.
Guide dogs are allowed on site free of charge.
The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. XL Bully, Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).
