  • Small, dog-friendly site in the Southern Uplands of Scotland
  • Access to the nine-mile Meikledale walk; a 45-minute drive to Carlisle
  • River on site for paddling; 10 minutes’ drive from a pub
Longing to stow yourself away in Scotland’s Southern Uplands for a while? You’ll have plenty of time for walking, recharging and other simple pleasures at Bush of Ewes. This dog-friendly site is set in a walkers’ haven, right at the start of the nine-mile Meikledale walk. Other hiking areas in the vicinity include the prehistoric trail at Loch Hill (five minutes’ drive) and the Langholm Hills (10 minutes). Rise and shine, fry an egg over the firepit and then take yourself for a little paddle in the river to really wake yourself up. Birds and other wildlife are frequent visitors at this peaceful site, so keep an eye out as you go along. Facilities on site include four toilets and one shower. You might want to track down a Scottish castle or make your way to Carlisle (45 minutes) for a spot of sightseeing. The Lake District National Park is around an hour’s drive away too, if you fancy a day out by the lakes. The site sits on the A7, so getting about will be easy, and you won’t necessarily have to rely on your car, either, since there’s a bus stop right outside. The 95 bus goes to Langholm village (10 minutes), where there’s a small shop, a fishing lake and a pub/restaurant. Further out, Hawick (25 minutes) has a golf course, leisure centre, shops and local museum, while Canonbie (20 minutes) has a cinema and pretty stretch along the River Esk.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked The location and views were beautiful

Disliked Classed as dog friendly, but no real walks to take a dog …. Small enclosed space next to rusting kids playground for your dog to exercise ( on lead)… no access to stream
Toilets and solo shower were filthy with cobwebs and dirt. If they put the same amount of effort into keeping rest of site clean as they did the strip of grass outside their own mobile home it would be better.
Atmosphere was just off

From the manager: Thank you for your review just to answer some points.
1. There are more than enough walks for dogs you can walk at least 30 miles without hitting a road or bumping into a person up the hills and tracks right outside campsite.
2. The enclosed dog area is suitable for dogs off lead, we ask for no dogs to be off a lead around the campsite due to livestock and not everyone liking dogs.
3 the play park is not ours it is council owned and part of ewes halls we have just put a gate in so children do not have to go near the road to access the park.
4. We both work full time as well as run the site we do heavily rely on campers to clean up after themselves in the shower, and the toilets and showers are outside so as fast I get rid of the cobwebs they do return it is a never ending job.
5 I have not been to your house and insulted yours so please do not insult mine, yes there are a few weeds and tools outside the static which do get cleared when we get chance, again this is our home please do not insult it.
6 if the atmosphere was not right for you maybe visit a 10/10 site in the future thank you.

Electric optional hardstanding pitch

Liked Easy to find

Disliked As soon as we arrived the atmosphere was not very nice. We had a big group of people staying next to us with very loud music and obviously intent on having a party. The toilets etc were pretty awful and we chose to leave

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review, there was no music in the 5 minutes you decided to stay as we where out on the tuk tuk checking the area at the time you arrived and left, the toilets are cleaned at least 4 times a day more when we are not working our normal jobs if you spoke to us rather than ignoring us when we even said hello we may have been able to move you to another pitch if there was an issue.

Will be back in the future for another weekend retreat

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Perfect Location for a quick getaway, super views, dark skies, animals, river, trees, hills and walks nearby. Lovely owners.

Disliked Not really a dislike but the facilities need updating or expanding, we understand that may be difficult being on a small holding farm though.

Local attractions

The city of Carlisle (45 minutes’ drive) has a well-preserved castle that must have seen some serious action during its centuries-old life in this border city. Other attractions include a stretch of Hadrian’s Wall and a medieval cathedral. After all that sightseeing, take a rest in one of several green areas along the River Eden. For outdoor activities such as watersports, cycling and horseriding, you can make a beeline for Kielder Water and Forest Park (50 minutes). There are also wooded walks, plus stargazing events organised by Kielder Observatory and birdwatching (ospreys nest here). At the Solway Coast National Landscape (about an hour), you can admire the mudflats in the Inner Solway Firth, stretch out on the sand dunes at Mawbray Banks or check out the boggy pools at Drumburgh Moss, which are visited by curlews, geese and skylarks, depending on the time of year.
