  • Small, dog-friendly site in the Southern Uplands of Scotland
  • Access to the nine-mile Meikledale walk; a 45-minute drive to Carlisle
  • River on site for paddling; 10 minutes’ drive from a pub
Longing to stow yourself away in Scotland’s Southern Uplands for a while? You’ll have plenty of time for walking, recharging and other simple pleasures at Bush of Ewes. This dog-friendly site is set in a walkers’ haven, right at the start of the nine-mile Meikledale walk. Other hiking areas in the vicinity include the prehistoric trail at Loch Hill (five minutes’ drive) and the Langholm Hills (10 minutes). Rise and shine, fry an egg over the firepit and then take yourself for a little paddle in the river to really wake yourself up. Birds and other wildlife are frequent visitors at this peaceful site, so keep an eye out as you go along. Facilities on site include four toilets and one shower. You might want to track down a Scottish castle or make your way to Carlisle (45 minutes) for a spot of sightseeing. The Lake District National Park is around an hour’s drive away too, if you fancy a day out by the lakes. The site sits on the A7, so getting about will be easy, and you won’t necessarily have to rely on your car, either, since there’s a bus stop right outside. The 95 bus goes to Langholm village (10 minutes), where there’s a small shop, a fishing lake and a pub/restaurant. Further out, Hawick (25 minutes) has a golf course, leisure centre, shops and local museum, while Canonbie (20 minutes) has a cinema and pretty stretch along the River Esk.

Liked Great pitch sizes, friendly owners, the river was a hit with the kids! The park is also great. Loved the animals. The honesty shop was great and reasonably priced. Would definitely stay here again

Disliked The distance to the toilets (didn’t bother me, more so my kids) wouldn’t put me off staying again, just worth noting.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Fantastic organisation and having the owners on site is really reassuring. Absolutely loved that there were sheep and chickens on the site. The on site toilets were clean and the site is very well looked after. Good location and well signed from the road. Friendly atmosphere and very well managed by the owners.

Disliked There's quite a lot of hard concrete or rubble underneath the central grass area which makes driving in the basic tent pegs a little difficult by hand. A sturdy hammer or drill & screw in pegs would be highly advantageous.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Excellent small site, well maintained grounds. Owners were lovely and friendly and it is excellent value for money. Will definitely return.

Disliked Only one shower, but we didnt have issues getting a shower when we needed one. Toilets are quite far away from the pitches.
It is very close to the road, but it's a small niggle.

Liked nice few days break with the kids, they loved the animals, the river and the dark skies ( lucky enough to see the meteor shower). Fire pit provided, log for sale on site.

Disliked nothing, just the perfect quiet site we needed.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Nice quiet site, enjoyed the animals wandering about & being able to walk through them with a well behaved dog down to the stream which runs through.

Disliked Our only recommendation would be to increase from 1 shower to possibly a 2nd.

Local attractions

The city of Carlisle (45 minutes’ drive) has a well-preserved castle that must have seen some serious action during its centuries-old life in this border city. Other attractions include a stretch of Hadrian’s Wall and a medieval cathedral. After all that sightseeing, take a rest in one of several green areas along the River Eden. For outdoor activities such as watersports, cycling and horseriding, you can make a beeline for Kielder Water and Forest Park (50 minutes). There are also wooded walks, plus stargazing events organised by Kielder Observatory and birdwatching (ospreys nest here). At the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (about an hour), you can admire the mudflats in the Inner Solway Firth, stretch out on the sand dunes at Mawbray Banks or check out the boggy pools at Drumburgh Moss, which are visited by curlews, geese and skylarks, depending on the time of year.
