Bush of Ewes: Views over the countryside

General

  • Small, dog-friendly pop-up site in the Southern Uplands of Scotland
  • Access to the nine-mile Meikledale walk; a 45-minute drive to Carlisle
  • River on site for paddling; 10 minutes’ drive from a pub

Longing to stow yourself away in Scotland’s Southern Uplands for a while? You’ll have plenty of time for walking, recharging and other simple pleasures at Bush of Ewes. This dog-friendly pop-up site is set in a walkers’ haven, right at the start of the nine-mile Meikledale walk. Other hiking areas in the vicinity include the prehistoric trail at Loch Hill (five minutes’ drive) and the Langholm Hills (10 minutes).

Rise and shine, fry an egg over the firepit and then take yourself for a little paddle in the river to really wake yourself up. Birds and other wildlife are frequent visitors at this peaceful site, so keep an eye out as you go along.

You might want to track down a Scottish castle or make your way to Carlisle (45 minutes) for a spot of sightseeing. The Lake District National Park is around an hour’s drive away too, if you fancy a day out by the lakes.

The site sits on the A7, so getting about will be easy, and you won’t necessarily have to rely on your car, either, since there’s a bus stop right outside. The 95 bus goes to Langholm village (10 minutes), where there’s a small shop, a fishing lake and a pub/restaurant. Further out, Hawick (25 minutes) has a golf course, leisure centre, shops and local museum, while Canonbie (20 minutes) has a cinema and pretty stretch along the River Esk.

Lovely location next to the hills and small river on the site, definitely going back as it was such a lovely location. Owners were friendly and helpful too.

    Disliked:

Didnt like how we were asked to put the music down at 8pm, the owners told us they are sorting out the issues and extend it by next year. Also i suffer really bad hayfever and owners were cutting grasses while we were on the site. I struggled a lot, it would be lovely if they could do during a quiter time if possible.

Everything about this wee site is fantastic from the owners to the large open space the kids really enjoyed playing freely and safely in. The toilet block is spotless and there is a great small stream with a swing over it again kids had great fun and another added bonus is a bouncy castle goes up of an afternoon that the kids just loved. You can also buy logs on site so no need to bring your own we had a brilliant weekend would definitely recommend this affordable family/dog friendly site 😀 thank you guys for all your help and hard work 👍

Local attractions

The city of Carlisle (45 minutes’ drive) has a well-preserved castle that must have seen some serious action during its centuries-old life in this border city. Other attractions include a stretch of Hadrian’s Wall and a medieval cathedral. After all that sightseeing, take a rest in one of several green areas along the River Eden.

For outdoor activities such as watersports, cycling and horseriding, you can make a beeline for Kielder Water and Forest Park (50 minutes). There are also wooded walks, plus stargazing events organised by Kielder Observatory and birdwatching (ospreys nest here).

At the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (about an hour), you can admire the mudflats in the Inner Solway Firth, stretch out on the sand dunes at Mawbray Banks or check out the boggy pools at Drumburgh Moss, which are visited by curlews, geese and skylarks, depending on the time of year.

Must see

  • World Famous Old Blacksmith's Shop Centre (24.8 kilometres)
  • Birdoswald Roman Fort (35.4 kilometres)
  • Carlisle Castle (36.4 kilometres)
