General

  • Secluded seaside family park
  • Direct access to a spectacular sandy beach
  • Shop, takeaway, picnic and outdoor play area

What a secluded and sandy Scottish sojourn can be had at Sandyhills Bay Holiday Park: it's by the sea with smashing views over the bay and has direct access to a beaut beach.

And it's in lush locale for foresty and nature walks too, as it's close to the RSPB reserve at Mersehead and the walking trails and wildlife of Dalbeattie Forest. More? Sandyhills is also near the yachting village of Kippford and shooting down slopes on the world-famed 7stanes mountain bike trails, and has an 18-hole golf course, riding centre and an indoor swimming pool with restaurant all a short walk away.

The Sandyhills Bay facilities are kept to excellent standards and include a modern heated toilet and shower block, a launderette, covered washing-up sinks and a play area splendidly set beside the sand dunes. A well-stocked shop is next to reception along with a beach takeaway and picnic tables. Wardens are on site if you need any help or info during your stay.

And yet more evidence of Sandyhills Bay's lush locale? The spectacular coastal walk to Rockcliffe, shown on More 4's Walks with my Dog programme starts from the park.

We had a great stay - a warm welcome on the Saturday afternoon. Our farewell too was thoughtful - not too fussy just anxious to know we had enjoyed our visit - which we had. Lovely peaceful site. The facilities looked as if they had recently been decorated and were clean and warm. Lots of lovely hot water for showers.
We enjoyed a late afternoon walk along the shore and then walked to Rockliffe on Sunday.

The peaceful location and close proximity to the beach. The toilets and showers were clean and the staff we're friendly.

    Disliked:

The ground was quite rocky (plenty of bent tent pegs), the shop is not very well stocked (although there is a Londis about 2 miles away in Colvend). The campsite does not have good lighting at night so make sure you bring plenty of torches with you.

    Quiet location and good beach

    Disliked:

There is NO TAKEAWAY on site nor is there Free Wifi. Wifi costs £6 for 24 hours!!! Also as the mobile network is limited to 2G only then using your own data network isn't also possible - great if you don't want to be connected.
The shop has very limited provisions so make sure you bring pretty much everything you need with you.
There is barrier access to the site but the site isn't as secure as implied by the barrier entrance as there is public access to the beach from outside the barrier and then walkers can get onto the site from the beach.
Having to gain access to the toilet/shower block with a door key is not only dated (key code doors would be a step forward) but awkward when you have to take children to both facilities separately or you don't have the key with you.

The site is clean, well kept and there is lots of space. The facilities are well maintained and are clean. Hot water in the showers, dishwashing area is clean and tidy and the water is hot enough to wash. Has good laundry facilities too. Short walk to the beautiful coast line for lots of walks and for the kids to play on the beach. Dogs are allowed all year round. The Wardens are lovely, they work on common sense so there isn't a list of rules and regulations posted all over the site like some others I've been too. Lovely shop on site selling useful items, bacon, bread, milk, buckets, spades etc. It's gated key entry so the security is good. Small play area for the kids too. We had 11 months old, 7 yrs, 9 yrs, 2 11 yrs and a 15yrs old with us, there was something for them all to do. Our dog was able to come to the beach and play with the kids it was brilliant! We will return as soon as we can.

    Disliked:

Nothing to dislike - though make sure you put your rubbish in the bin and food in either the car or the tent. There are foxes and badgers.
