  • Dog-friendly site in Castle Douglas, an 18th-century market town
  • Overlooking Carlingwark Loch and five minutes’ drive from Loch Ken
  • A short walk from shops and food venues with quality local produce
Foodies who appreciate a good view just as much as a good dinner will surely want to flock to Lochside Caravan Park. Overlooking Carlingwark Loch, this site is in Castle Douglas, a small 18th-century market town self-appointed as Scotland’s first ‘food town’. Just half an hour’s drive from Dumfries, it’s also easy to reach… The main part of the town is just a five-minute walk away and your ticket to browsing independent shops, eating out and attending local events such as the annual Stewartry Agricultural Show. Castle Douglas is particularly known for its quality local food and drinks, so you should have plenty of energy for trips to Loch Ken (just five minutes’ drive north), Threave Garden (five minutes south) and Threave Castle (10 minutes). There are also several supermarkets, a post office and a petrol station in town, so it’s easy to get practical matters (snacks and such) out of the way. That leaves more time to explore Carlingwark Loch, which is dotted with islands and excellent for boating, learning to sail or picnicking. There is a lochside kids' playground within walking distance. If you’re still looking for extra things to fill your time, there are also swimming pools and tennis courts in Castle Douglas. The A75 runs past the town, providing an easy route out to sights around Dumfries and Galloway including Kirkcudbright 20 minutes’ drive away.

What customers say

This campsite boasts a beautiful lochside location, conveniently close to Castle Douglas town centre with its amenities. Visitors frequently praise the exceptional cleanliness of the facilities, particularly the toilets and showers, and the friendly, helpful staff. The pitches are generally considered flat and level. However, some guests reported noise from public park activities and dogs off leads, and a few found the hardstanding pitches resembled a car park. A pot wash area and improved Wi-Fi were suggested improvements.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Great site, nice and peaceful in a lovely area. Stunning views. My kids loved the parks and going for walks. The toilet block is not too far away no matter where your pitch is which meant that I could let my kids go to the toilet by themselves and still be able to see them going and coming back. With three young kids on my own this is a big positive so that I don't spend half of my day trekking to the toilets.

Disliked The only thing I missed was a place to wash my dishes. We were the only tent there at the time with loads of motorhomes I understand why this is not needed and I managed fine with a washing up bowl and heating water on my stove but a place to go an wash them quicker and without grass in the water would have made this a 10/10.

From the manager: I am pleased you enjoyed your stay with us! We do have 2 Laundry rooms on site and they both have 2 sinks in them where you can wash your dishes, so I am so sorry we didn't make you aware of this!

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked Liked the location, by the lake, handy for town. Facilities were good.

Disliked I find it strange the mown grass is left to lie on the grass pitches - it's incredibly messy in a tourer and was infested with small flies.
I also didn't see the option to book an electric hook up on Pitch up, but there were many available so it pays to ring ahead!
