  • Dog-friendly site in Castle Douglas, Scotland's 'food town'
  • Overlooking Carlingwark Loch and five minutes’ drive from Loch Ken
  • Shops, restaurants and lochside play area within a short walk
Foodies who appreciate a good view just as much as a good dinner will surely want to take a look at Lochside Caravan Park. Overlooking Carlingwark Loch, this site is in Castle Douglas, a small 18th-century market town self-appointed as Scotland’s first ‘food town’ – and with good reason, as it has more than 80 independent food retailers of various sorts. The main part of the town is just a five-minute walk away, so this is a handy spot for shopping, eating out and attending local events such as the annual Stewartry Agricultural Show. And with so much excellent food on offer nearby you should have plenty of energy for trips to Loch Ken (five minutes’ drive north), Threave Garden (five minutes south) and Threave Castle (10 minutes). There are also several supermarkets, a post office and a petrol station in town, so it’s easy to get practical matters out of the way. That leaves more time to explore Carlingwark Loch, which is dotted with islands and excellent for boating, learning to sail or just having a scenic picnic. A lochside kids' playground is also within walking distance. The A75 runs past the town, providing an easy route out to other parts of Dumfries and Galloway, including Kirkcudbright (20 minutes’ drive away). Amenities on site are fairly simple but have all the essentials covered, including a bathroom block with accessible facilities, a chemical disposal point and a laundry area with washer, dryer and washing-up area. You’re also welcome to bring a barbecue to cook up whatever goodies you’ve acquired in town.

What customers say

Lovely lochside spot, handy for Castle Douglas. Staff are a gem, facilities spotless. Hardstanding's a bit car-park-y, but grass pitches are good. Occasional noise from park/dogs, but most find it peaceful.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Very friendly welcome. Allowed two small tents on one pitch. Offered the use of a second pitch with hard standing for our motorcycles. Quiet site, just a short walk to town centre with some nice cafe/ restaurants. Large well-equipped toilet/shower block, spotlessly clean.

Disliked Nothing

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Walking distance to shops and restaurants. The park was quiet and peaceful. Lovely view of the loch.

Disliked In a public park giving access to the public to walk through past the tents. Made me worry about the security of my bike. Not the park fault, I don’t read the description well enough prior to booking.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked The area is beautiful right next to the loch. It’s very quiet and peaceful. Not too far from shops so no need to take too much with you. They have toilets and showers on site.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked Very close to the town, nice walks nearby

Disliked The static car park set up is just a bit peculiar, with some of the residents maybe not on a par with usual camping ethics that you may expect.
