Local attractions

Castle Douglas is a small town situated between Dumfries and Kirkcudbright. With Loch Ken to the north it makes an ideal centre for exploring Dumfries and Galloway. As Scotland’s only designated Food Town, Castle Douglas prides itself in its top quality, locally produced food and drink. So whether you’re eating out or discovering the wide array of wonderful produce available from local retailers, we know you’ll be delighted with your food and drink options! Garden lovers shouldn’t miss a visit to Threave Gardens where the National Trust’s gardeners are trained. And closeby Threave Castle, the stronghold of the Black Douglases, is also well worth a visit. There are around 50 local businesses in and around Castle Douglas that either produce or sell quality food and drink. The town has many independent shops selling a great variety of goods in addition to food. There are also a variety of establishments providing meals and snacks, and several supermarkets/grocery stores. The town also has a Post Office and filling station. Located around 18 miles from Dumfries along the A75, the town is a thriving centre for prosperous local farming. The Stewartry Agricultural Show is an annual event that takes place nearby in August. Beside Castle Douglas is Carlingwark Loch, dotted with islands and great for boating and learning to sail and picnicking. There is a caravan park and kids' playground by the loch and at the far end of the loch is National Trust for Scotland's Threave Garden, House and Estate open to visitors all year. On an island in the River Dee stands 14th century Threave Castle, the great fortress of the Douglases, which can be reached by ferry. Nearby is Threave Wildfowl Reserve, an important place for wintering wildfowl, where visitors can watch the birds from hides.
