  • Well-equipped holiday park among Ayr's 30+ castles
  • Indoor pool, solarium, wildlife trails and kids' clubs for ages 4-15
  • Entertainment venue, bar-restaurant and fish and chip shop
Hmmm, here’s a compelling conundrum for someone at Sundrum Castle Holiday Park: with more than 30 cracking castles tucked into the landscape around Ayr, which on earth should you visit first? And even if you stay on site, it’s decisions, decisions thanks to the packed programme of entertainment and activities at all hours of the day. Ditherers, you have been warned. Daytime choices include a splash about on the flume at the indoor pool, a relaxing session in the solarium, 10-pin bowling, a round of crazy golf, a deerstalking stroll around the wildlife trails, or a game of five-a-side or basketball. For kids, there’s a mind-boggling selection of fun sessions in the kids’ clubs for ages four to 15. As night falls, take your pick of competitions, live music, cabaret, dancing and comedy in the on-site entertainment venue. As for food, the Tam O’Shanter bar-restaurant has a comprehensive set of food and drink options including freshly brewed Costa Coffee, or you could just grab a bite from the fish and chip shop. So, if you’re after an unspoilt country setting close to fab beaches and some of Scotland’s top tourist attractions, Sundrum Castle Holiday Park may well be the perfect spot. (Phew, at least that's one decision made…)

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Pool, bar, activities

Disliked: Dirty showers with no mop to clean between users, only one hook in shower and no shelf/ chair to sit things on, shower time was so short. Reception sent us to wrong space.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Our pitch was ideal plant of room on the hardstanding to sit outside on. The ladies shower area was always clean and well looked after. Was a lovely quite site. A short 1/2 mile walk took us into the main road where we got a bus into Ayr this saved us mobbing the MoHo

Disliked: Hubby said the gents shower area was filthy, he tried to use it at different times to make sure it wasnt just a one off, sadly this was t the case.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (no pets)

Liked: The staff, are all very friendly

Disliked: The food in the Tam O shanter was not very good bordering disgusting.
The lasagna was cremated, and the chicken pasta was microwaved. This was my fourth choice as the other 3 they didn't have. Waited over an hour with 2 grandkids, and even if they would eat their dinner, had to call a Chinese.
The pitch was soaking and this was after 4 days without rain (I only live 15 miles away).
I went on the chat to see if I could pitch my tent earlier than 2pm and was told I could for £15 2 hours earlier. This was so I could put the tent up without my grandkids running around. I wasn't using any facilities and was on my own but still had to pay £15 for 2hrs early. I then received two emails, one with my original booking to say I could check-in at 1pm and then another to confirm my change to 12pm

From the manager: Hi John, thanks for taking the time to leave your review.

While we're pleased you found the team to be friendly, we are sorry to hear you are disappointed with the food quality & options in our restaurant. All food is freshly made to order, so on rare occasions where we have missed the mark, we hope you were able to speak to one of our team in the restaurant to get this resolved.

In relation to priority arrival, there is a small fee if you'd like to check-in before our standard check-in time. This is for guests who wish to guarantee an earlier check-in time of 12pm, rather than 2pm.

I do hope this experience won't deter you from visiting one of our 65 Holiday Parks again in future. ^AB

Could be a good site after some work to pitches, and a lack of Pikeys.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: The bar and food.

Disliked: Our pitch had been waterlogged therefore very muddy. The awning tent couldn't be used on the grass as there was too much of a slope.
In the early hours of Thursday the toilet was required, only to find all of the toilet paper put down stuffing them and excrement left on top. The ladies was used. Early Friday morning again needed the toilet to find the whole floor area covered in mud and grass. Again used the ladies. Felt sorry for the cleaners.
Site too far out from Ayr.
All the advertised walks were found to be on private land.
Surrounded and a bit intimidated by a large group of foreign types (one of whose young lads was seen running from the toilet incidents).

From the manager: Hi George, thanks for taking the time to leave your review.

I'm sorry the conditions of your pitch were muddy; we appreciate this this can have an impact on our guests experience and hope you were able to raise any concerns with our dedicated team so that they could look to assist you with this.

We're also sorry to hear you were kept awake by your neighbours, we do have a quiet policy on park that guests should be respectful of others and start to lower any noise after 11pm, so it's disappointing to hear that this wasn't your experience on this occasion.

I do hope you were able to raise any concerns with our dedicated Guest Experience Team in Reception, so that they could look to try and resolve these issues during your time with us.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Park for the kids and the pool.

Disliked: Pitch was too close to the football pitch so our caravan was hit repeatedly with a football. Complained and they said in reception there was nothing they could do and they weren't liable for any damage. Men's toilet block was disgusting and dirty throughout. Children climbing on roof of toilet block. Overpriced in bar and shop. Been here a few times but seems to have gone downhill. Won't be back.

From the manager: Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to submit your review.

It's lovely to hear the children in your party enjoyed our facilities, from playing at the park to splashing in the swimming pool.

I will share your comments regarding the location of your pitch and the facilities with our Touring Manager and ask that they investigate this further.

It’s disappointing to hear you do not find our bar and restaurant reasonably priced. We always aim to provide something suitable for all budgets with ever changing offers and also stay competitive with the local area.

I do hope this experience won't deter you from visiting one of our 65 Holiday Parks again in future. ^AB

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Had everything we needed, our children enjoyed playground, our pitch was straight next to it so we could see them from our caravan. It was very noisy as lots of playing children might bother people without children. At night, it was very peaceful. The bathroom was very clean.

Local attractions

How to pick from the 30 or so castles close to Sundrum Castle Holiday Park? For sheer magnitude plus dramatic ocean views, try Culzean Castle, which sits in 600 acres a few miles south of Ayr. Those with kids in tow should head for Kelburn Castle, with its secret forest walkways, crocodile swamp, petting zoo and play barn; keen golfers meanwhile will appreciate the course at Rowallan Castle, which has an actual 19th hole (as well as the more traditional variety). Treat yourselves to a day at the races in nearby Ayr, also great for shopping and beaches, and home to Pirate Pete’s, where you’ll find Scotland’s biggest indoor play area, as well as outdoor rides, a laser zone and a cute traditional seafront café. Other popular day trips include a trip across the water to the stunning Isle of Arran; a pilgrimage to the Burns National Heritage Park to visit the Bard’s cottage and the neighbouring museum, and a cuddle-filled day out at the Heads of Ayr Farm Park.
