General

  • Swish spa and leisure resort on the eastern shores of Loch Fyne
  • A 40-minute drive from Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park
  • Cycle hire, fitness centre, indoor and outdoor pools, play area

Bag yourself a blissful break at Portavadie Loch Fyne, a spa and leisure resort on the shores of a lake in a part of the Scottish Highlands known as the ‘Secret Coast’. It’s an all-season spot with glorious views, a heated infinity pool looking out over the water, and first-rate marina facilities.

The site also has restaurants, bars, shops… and an intriguing backstory. It sits on a bit of land in Argyll that was originally earmarked to become an oil rig construction facility but was never used. Nowadays, it’s a swish resort designed to appeal to all sorts of travellers, from families and couples to hikers and sailors.

Spend days dipping in and out of the indoor and outdoor pools, breaking up the aquatic activities by exercising in the fitness centre, or cycling on local forest trails using one of the hired bikes. Jaunts in the car could include drives around the lush lake in Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park (40 minutes).

Alternatively, stick to the site and fish on the loch or birdwatch – guests have been known to glimpse buzzards, otters and golden eagles sparking through the skies. Keen-eyed visitors have spotted basking sharks out in the water too.

For beach days, the sandy sweep of Ostel Bay is a 15-minute drive.

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Guests under the age of 2 are not allowed on site.

Minimum spacing of 2 metres between pitches.

At least one of the party members must be aged 21 or over.

All: access to the swimming pool is not included in the rate and is charged £8.00 per adult and £4.00 per child per session.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Facilities/activities including swimming pools, sauna and outdoor infinity and spa pools are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Please note that the electric connections for the tent pitches are traditional 3-pin household extensions.

Not a dislike, Grey waste disposal was a hassle but understand it's being attended to with concrete and grid soon. Did not distract from a fabulous place.

A wow place. The set up was great. The pool was awesome.

Easy to reach from Talbert ferry and the A83. I left using Tighabruich using a 7.5m Moho. It can be done but maybe be harder in summer with more users. A lot of roads with passing points.

    Disliked:

One little niggle was the grey water point was not either completed... And could either damage the set up or someones Moho.

Both the Dirty and Grey points were off the ground. I was ok with the Dirty as I have a small unit to lift. But if someone has a bigger toilet cassette or not so strong will struggle. The grey wasn't set right involved a lift of 150mm but there was no support or surrounding. This could make the unit fall, break the gully but ultimately damage the building it is against. Also anyone using the on board tank may struggle.

The rest of the site was excellent, just my pennies worth.

From the manager...

Hi Craig we always aim to give that wow factor that our coastline so deserves!

A concrete Grey Waste pan is in the planning so hopefully that will be sorted for your next visit and in the mean time anyone that needs assistance of any kind need only ask and we will be there with strong backs and expert pouring abilities.

Looking forward to showing off more of our facilities on your next visit.

Fantastic location with spectacular views along the coast of Loch Fynne. Shower facilities were immaculate and plenty of showers available in the mornings. Electric hook up point with a water tap means everything is at hand if you are taking a camper. Plenty to do onsite with a great choice of leisure activities on offer. A couple of nice walks to go on around the site and a frequent ferry service to take you across to Tyndrum where there are some nice places to eat out. Portavadie is the ideal location as a base to explore what the west coast has to offer. Ideal for all ages to enjoy the great Scottish Outdoors.

    Disliked:

When pitching our awning we found the gravel base great for the van to sit on , but the grass pitches were raised slightly (kerb height) which meant there was a gap at the bottom of the awning.

From the manager...

Hi Allan thanks for the great rating!

We try to make life as easy and relaxing as we can (while still protecting our grass). Maybe we need to find some extra large draft excluders?

Looking forward to seeing you next time.

Local attractions

There’s plenty on site to keep you occupied, but for days out and about head to historical structures such as the ruined Mac Ewen Castle fort (20 minutes) or the medieval Royal Castle of Tarbet (40 minutes) stronghold, then round off adventures the Scottish way with a dram or two at the Whisky West Coast distillery (40 minutes).

Those eager to explore a touch further afield could bound over to the Isle of Bute (an hour and 15 minutes) for ambles around the Art Deco and Victorian architecture of palm-lined Rothesay, a town that's rather incongruously known for having some of the best public toilets in the nation. Walks are fab on Bute too – head north for strolls through a heather-strewn landscape.

Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park (40 minutes) is just as scenic a destination. Wander among handsome hills and glens or find a spot to relax by one of the many lakes before pausing in Dunoon (50 minutes), one of the Firth of Clyde’s main resort towns, to take in the Victorian pier and rummage in the craft shops and galleries.
