  • Scenic site 10 minutes' drive from Oban, with views to Kerrera island
  • Ferries, whisky distillery and horse riding within 10 mins' drive
  • Play area and shop on site; dogs welcome
For some folk, Oban is a jumping-off point for trips to the spectacular Scottish islands; for others, it’s a very handy location simply for sinking into the gentle pace of rural Highlands life while still keeping convenient access to shops and other amenities. Whichever of those groups you fall into, a fine base awaits at Oban Holiday Park, a spacious and peaceful site in Gallanchmore, about 10 minutes’ drive south of the Oban. It’s a scenic spot indeed, with views out over the sea to the island of Kerrera (which you can take a closer look at by boarding a ferry less than a mile away). There are plenty more options for island hopping from the harbour in Oban, whether you’re doing a grand tour or just taking day trips. The town also has a good collection of shops, restaurants and things to do, including a cinema and golf course – not forgetting the option for a stroll along the seafront at sunset, watching the boats bobbing in the harbour. Staying here isn’t all about the islands, of course – there’s a whole heap of things to see on the mainland too, including castles, gardens and a whisky distillery. Activities are plentiful too, with pony trekking and scuba diving close by as well as a good choice of places to go for walks and bike rides. On site, all is nicely convenient too, with a small food shop, chemical disposal and modern toilets and showers; there’s also a play area where the kids can have a good run about. The site is supported by natural water springs, so you'll need to boil any water you intend to consume or drink bottled water instead.

What customers say

This site boasts stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere, conveniently located a short walk or drive from Oban. Visitors praise the friendly and helpful staff, clean facilities, and the well-maintained grounds. However, some reviewers mention that the touring pitches can be soft and uneven, especially in wet weather, and a number of facilities, including water supply and showers, could benefit from an upgrade. Despite these drawbacks, many guests found it a great base for exploring the local area and would recommend it.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Friendly welcome

Disliked The shower block was revolting and the path access had been blocked by 4 heaps of building hardcore. There was no way we would shower in there as they were horrible. Couldn’t get there either except by walking over really boggy ground. This area was being worked on and was far from ready for visitors.

The website promotes the lovely Loch views. But these can only be enjoyed by the large number of static caravans. The motorhome pitches are in a dip looking at the back of the ugly static vans. We felt like we were in an episode of Colditz with rows and rows of prisoner blocks.

I think it’s fair to say that this site is set up predominantly for the static caravans. Motorhome are a complete afterthought. Their nightly rate does not reflect this however.

Final comment - we were really disappointed to find that there were no laundry facilities on site. We had been doing the North Coast 500, on the road for weeks. Every single site we had stayed on previously had a washer and dryer, even the little sites in really remote locations.

Avoid this site!

Electric grass touring pitch

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Good size pitch, Hardstanding.

Disliked Drinking water was terrible if you had to use it, it had to be boiled before you could, I refused to put it through my water system on my caravan as I would have had to give it a good decontamination when I got home, we had to travel to Oban to purchase bottled water at our cost which I think the site should supply FOC to site users as a good will gesture.

The electrical supply to my caravan tripped out from site supply, I phoned the emergency number that was on the welcome leaflet and to young members of staff arrived and didn't have a clue what to do, luckily I am a retired electrician and was able to restore supply as the staff members informed me that they could only call their emergency electrician which there was no way that it would have been restored that night it was only 1700hrs.

The closest amenities block was closed without warning as they were carrying out work to said building, we were informed by staff that we would have to use the block which was slightly more of a distance away but did have hot water in the dishwashing area.

Other than the above we did have a good time.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Spacious pitches with car next to you. Great location and will be returning.

Disliked Limited shower availability and not always clean depending on person before you. In same room as toilets but was great for a campsite.

Disliked Toilet / shower block tiny pointless heater basically a shed door ( nobody bothered closing), maybe a spring to close to maintain the minimum heat. No hot water to wash, to cold to shower.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Great site and views, helpful staff. Toilet block spotless.

Disliked Sadly waterlogged grass pitches meant parking on gravelled area in front of swing park. Fine cos site was quiet during the week, but maybe more firm pitches required?

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Nice location.

Disliked Motorhome pitches were on grass and not suitable for weight. Toilet blocks have no hot water for washing and use water for the hills. Toilet roll wasn't replaced the 2 days we stayed. No free WiFi for use and poor to no signal on mobile.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Views out to sea

Disliked Toilet block was old and freezing cold. Showers were hot but made little difference when getting dressed. Grass pitches for moterhomes were ok but it was wet and so we were worried about becoming stuck. The pitches are on a slope so beware before parking as this can make sleeping awkward. Would be nice to have level hardstanding pitches with water as well as electric!

Local attractions

Getting out to see the surroundings? There are lots of lovely walks to be done nearby, or you can hire bikes in Oban (10 minutes’ drive) for scenic cycle rides. Achnalarig Riding Stables (10 minutes) is another option, for pony and horse riding lessons or treks – or you might like to see what’s out at sea by joining a scuba trip from Puffin Dive Centre (five minutes’ walk). Once you’ve viewed Kerrera from your pitch, head up the road (five minutes’ drive) to board a ferry over to the island – there’s a great seven-mile walking trail that runs from the harbour and will show you some of the island’s best bits. For other islands, it’s a 10-minute drive to Oban harbour, where services run to Lismore, Mull, Iona and Coll as well as more far-flung destinations. Back on the mainland, you may like to stop by at Dunstaffnage Castle (20 minutes), the Green Shoots garden (15 minutes) and Cruachan Dam Visitor Centre (35 minutes) – and don't forget a dram at Oban Distillery (10 minutes)…
