East Balthangie Caravan Park: kids loved it

General

  • Well-maintained and peaceful five-acre site in rural Aberdeenshire
  • A 20-minute drive from Banff; 25 minutes from Fraserburgh
  • Direct access to the North Sea Cycle Route; shared kitchen

It’s all about traditional outdoor holidays with fab farm views at East Balthangie Caravan Park, a site open all year round in rural Aberdeenshire where guests can settle down close to cracking coastal spots like the rugged coast of Banff and Buchan and the sandy beaches and dunes to the east. In fact, those bringing their bikes can get straight to the seaside pedalling, as there's direct access to the scenic North Sea Cycle Route.

The folk here say that their aim is to recreate what outdoor hols were like in the 1950s: as such, what you see is what you get, with the only additional charges being for extras like use of the machines in the laundry room. This is very much a 'live and let live' kind of place, where guests have plenty of room to pitch up in stunning Scottish surrounds and take in the peace and quiet.

The facilities here are traditional and well-maintained, including ladies' and gents' toilets, shower rooms with power showers and hairdryers, a laundry room with washing machines and tumble dryers, and a communal kitchen with a microwave, toaster and kettles. There's also a games room, where you can play pool, table tennis, table football or simply sit in the lounge area and watch TV or choose a book from the 'take a book, leave a book' library.

Dogs are welcome here, but please keep them on a lead except when in the dedicated dog-walking area.

East Balthangie Caravan Park is well set up for outdoor living: picnic tables have been strategically placed in some of the best spots for alfresco lunches. Crop growth allowing, you're also free to take strolls on the paths that crisscross the adjacent farmland. The nearest supermarket is in Cuminestown (10 minutes' drive). For a drink or pub-cooked meal, head into New Deer (10 minutes).

We stayed here for 4 nights and was perfect. The views are stunning, the owners are very helpful and friendly. Facilities include toilets, showers, kitchen, laundry and games room/information. There is also a borrow room if you have forgotten something which we did need to borrow another wind breaker. Facilities are clean and well maintained. The nearest little village cuminestown which has a local shop is about 7 mins drive away. With the Tesco being approx 30 mins. There is Turriff, Ellon and Cruden bay (stunning beach) that we visited all within approx 30 minute drive so great location. We will be staying here again, and highly recommend.

The site is compact and sheltered along one side, everything is well kept and clean, I was greeted by the owners given an explanation of the site facilities and a leaflet. I was looking forward to a three night stay sadly the weather went badly wrong and I decided to go home after one night. I would stay again if I was in the area

Thanks, Andy for a lovely review- sorry the weather turned for you, but we hope to see you again in the future. Storm Noah hit the South of England mainly, so fortunately we only experienced the top of the storm system!

Where do I start, I can't recommend this site enough, zero bad points, the owner was simply lovely.
Fresh eggs can be purchased, has washing machine and tumble dryer to use for a small fee, microwave and worktop area in the campers kitchen.
Family room with its own shower and toilet, showers in each of the ladies and gents toilet, Big enclosed field to walk your dog (we didn't take ours).
games room equipped with pool table, table tennis table, books, sofa, tv. The kids made use of this most nights.
The campsite was very private, a fraction of the price of other sites, didn't feel like we were being watched, as it can with some campsites.
    Peaceful location.
Notices on the toilets of places to go visit, with offers of help or anything the owners can do to make your stay more comfortable. They've honestly thought of everything.
If ever you're looking for a campsite that's similar to the wild camping feel, with a few luxuries, this is 100% the place.
Area is a decent drive to Elgin or Aberdeen, coastal drive is awesome and Burghead was a must see.
Can't recommend this site enough, we'll 100% be back

We unfortunately had a very grumpy 5 year old, who very much did not like the cold weather. Would definitely come back when it gets warmer.

Thank you Timothy for your lovely review!
We're sorry your 5-year-old was a little grumpy this trip, but we're sure, the grumpiness will improve when the Summer is here and camping is more of a pleasure for them!

Very peaceful site in a beautiful location. Facilities clean, pitches well kept. The owners are extremely helpful and friendly. Nothing is too much trouble. Great games room and a very helpful borrow room. The secure dog field is very good, my 2 dogs can't get enough of it. Very relaxed feel here without lots of silly rules that some sites have. It's a great location for stargazing as there's so little light polution. It's a short drive to stunning beaches and quaint towns. I can recommend the pies from Brown's butchers in Turriff.

Very welcoming host. Site was very peaceful and ehu and water on our pitch. Showers and a family shower block available but we didn't use it as self contained. Some pitches on a slight slope but ours was level.

    Disliked:

Lane up to site quite rutted. Apparently waiting for the council to fix it but we managed easily in our 7.5m motorhome.

From the manager...

Thank you Mark for your kind review! We are in Winter mode at the moment, so glad you found the site to your liking at this time of year. We're unable to make repairs to the potholes properly until after the last of the bad snow, but we will be filling them again as soon as, in anticipation of the council making more permanent repairs. At least you managed down the main entrance road this week as it was blocked with snow just a few days earlier, and the only route in was from the Cuminestown end!!!
Safe travels and we hope to see you again in the future.

Local attractions

Entranced by the scenery on site? There's plenty of things to see and do without straying far from base, with top picks being seaside strolls in Banff (20 minutes' drive) and tours of (purportedly haunted) Delgatie Castle (10 minutes). Aden Country Park (20 minutes), meanwhile, is a great option for picnics, barbecues and manageable trails; you can also poke your nose into a gift shop that sells local crafts and the artfully laid out Aberdeenshire Farming Museum.

Got a thing for blinking beacons? Make tracks for the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses in Fraserburgh (25 minutes), a historic lighthouse – the oldest on the Scottish mainland, no less – that was built right on top of a 16th-century castle. After having a look-see at the largest lens collection in the UK, other old buildings like Haddo House (25 minutes), Fyvie Castle (25 minutes) and Slains Castle (45 minutes) are up for inspection.

At a loose end on a Sunday morn? A rummage through the weekly market and car boot sale at Thainstone (40 minutes) should see to that.

Must see

  • Carnegie Museum (19.1 miles)
  • Aberdeen Maritime Museum (28.9 miles)
  • Duthie Park Winter Gardens (29.8 miles)
