General

  • Peaceful and spectaculary scenic site with private fishing lakes
  • Fully refurbished in 2017: café, play areas and well-stocked shop
  • 10 miles from Longleat and 20 minutes from Bath

You might want to arrange things so you're able to stay here for quite some time... Family-friendly, pet-friendly and spectacularly scenic Fairwood Lakes is a peaceful and remote park under the Salisbury Plains, newly updated in 2017 following an extensive redevelopment. It guarantees excellent facilities, a warm welcome, first-rate accommodation and return-to-nature retreats set deep in countryside for couples and families.

This is a highly scenic site, close to lakes and woodland: come here to fish, to laze or to use it as a base for investigating the lush landscapes and ancient sights within easy driving distance (Bath is 20 minutes from base and Stonehenge within half an hour; the site is also within 10 miles of the fab Longleat House and Safari Park).

The heart of the park is its lovely lakes, with carp up to 27lb, silverfish and pike all here to catch (fishing permits can be purchased from reception). And if you don't fancy angling? Amble around the lakes instead, for a peaceful several hours of daydreaming and wildlife spotting, or lie back with a book while the kids let loose in the play areas... there are three on site, including a large soft play area (day tickets available from reception); the Little Tikes outdoor adventure play area, specifically for toddlers, and an outdoor play area for ages three and up.

Among the swish redeveloped facilities is a new café, with wifi, an extensive decking area and a good range of freshly prepared breakfasts, sandwiches, light lunches, fresh coffees and homemade cakes to have in or take away. Special theme nights including summer barbecues and curry nights are held throughout high season.

Fairwood Lakes also has a small shop. Its refurbished amenities include dishwashing facilities, new toilet blocks, disabled toilets and chemical disposal points. A new amenities block was added in December 2017, with an individual disabled WC and shower wetroom.

A dog-friendly area is in the touring field.

Lovely clean flat site with good size pitches.
    Beautiful walks round lakes.

    Disliked:

Ran out of gas , unfortunately site does not keep spares had to drive 15 miles to get replacement not good for a site which has 20 touring pitches.
    Quite expensive

From the manager...

Thanks for the 8 out of 10!
Its not our fault you ran out of gas and with 20 pitches we are a small caravan site. it would make no economic sense for us to stock gas with this many pitches!
FYI our price is lower than our two neighbouring sites and in par with Wiltshire sites close to Longleat and Stonehenge.
I am sure that at £14 each for the night stay you will realise that by the time we have complied with stringent health and safety for you, insured you, watered you, electrified you, wi fid you, and maintained the lovely walks and pitches AND paid the commission to Pitch up AND 20 percent to the VAT man -we are not driving around in Rolls Royces!!!!
It is for these economic reasons that most touring sites are turning to static sites. The figures operating touring pitches are very hard to make ends meet. So no we are not expensive, just trying to keep prices realistic in order to make some money in the modern business environment, which is tough.

Although advertised with wi fi we were
Not able to enable this unless We were actually in the shop so very disappointed as couldn’t watch tv whilst there - in fact we cut short our stay and only stayed one night because of this !

From the manager...

We offer wi fi in our cafe and shop
And advertise such.
Great for email Facebook etc etc
NOT for streaming films.. if all our guests did this we would need a pipe as fat as the channel tunnel!!!
The digital signal at Fairwood is great so I am sure there must have been something to watch!
We are in some of the most beautiful Wiltshire countryside so coming to watch tv seems such a shame😞
Thankyou for your review.

The fishing lakes were lovely though we didn’t get the chance to actually fish in them, the price for renting a rod was more than reasonable. The tent pitch itself was great, all well maintained and flat patches of grass with your own parking space on the gravel. The location is good as well, close to Longleat/Bath etc. The fascilities are a bit limited at the moment but there was a brand new shower/toilet block being installed which would make things much better. Last but most importantly, the staff. Lynn and Rebecca are absolute stars, right from the time we met them they were professional, very friendly and took a real interest in us. We all really bonded and had a great laugh during breakfast each day. They made the experience such a joy and were given a big hug on our departure, look forward to seeing them again in the summer. We were given a tour by Rebecca of the lodges and they look amazing, really well designed and cosy inside. Also great for kids because of the giant playhouse they have, which me and my friend also enjoyed using (you have to try the big slide atleast once!) and also the cafe is a very clean and well maintained area offering amazing cakes which are made fresh locally. I recommend the lemon tart! They also have a shop which is well stocked with the things we always forget! Can’t praise this place highly enough

    Good sized, level pitches
    Large dog walking field
Very picturesque fishing lakes on site
    Cafe on site

    Disliked:

Lack of new facilities promised as completed - I booked this site as the owners response to another review stated that the new toilet & shower block would be complete by September - this was not the case at the time we visited, late October. Disappointing. Also, insufficient current facilities for the number of people staying - on our last morning there was a queue for the 2 ladies toilets & I had to share a sink (to wash my hands) with a little girl who was brushing her teeth. As another caravanner said, 'a bit too cosy!'.
Dog walking field in need of mowing - path round the outside is fine, but long grass in the remainder means it is difficult for small dogs to run through, and tennis balls are lost! Also, the 2 strand barbed wire fencing meant the dog could leave the field if not well trained, and the train line runs not too far from the top of the field. Something to be aware of.
Music is played in the open air children's play area from 8.30am each morning, and pitches 1 - 4 are located immediately adjacent to the public softplay/childrens play area & cafe, so there is considerable noise & a lack of privacy from around 9.30am - 5pm.
Limited play facilities for older children (over 8y) - new swings installed were only 'baby' seats.
Close proximity to the train line meant significant noise from passing commuter & freight trains at regular intervals, from early in the morning.

Booked to stay for a long weekend after reading the previous reviews !
Although we left the site early due to other commitments I must say that despite everything that the weather had in store for us ie. thunder, lightening and hailstones as my poor very wet husband was trying to set up the caravan we were very impressed with the site and especially the staff who were completely lovely without exception and the breakfast we enjoyed was very good value for money and plentiful as not one of the four of us could actually finish the plate full . Beautiful surroundings - can't think of a single thing that we didn't like .

We would love a return visit at some stage to see how the rest of the refurbishment has been completed although the temporary arrangements didn't affect our stay as we were aware of the situation in any case .

Thankyou very much everyone - pity we couldn't fix the weather for the balloon launch at Longleat perhaps next would be an excuse for another stay if not before.

Modern, flat pitches. Great lakes. Children's play area. Friendly staff.
Nice location with a pub or two within walking / riding distance.

    Disliked:

Shower - only one (new block under construction) but practically flooded as shower curtain is perhaps incorrectly positioned. Mop and bucket left in shower room to mop up yourself I presume!
Toilets - paper towel dispenser was empty for half of my stay. Not a big issue but easily be maintained.
As we used a sleep-in awning, the light on the electric hookup on our pitch wasn't ideal as it kept the awning quite bright all night.

From the manager...

New showers will be in place soon, no need for mops or buckets I hope..
Thanks for your review

Very quiet, relaxed, small campsite. Brilliant play facilities for young children, but soft play at an extra cost (pay once for all day entry). Communal grassed area for kids to run about on, cannot be seen from your pitch so you can't send little ones on their own. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Price is reasonable. Campsite is very tidy. Level, fairly spacious pitches.

    Disliked:

Toilet/shower facilities limited, had to stand in line for a shower in the morning. No bins.

From the manager...

We have bins..By the cafe..Two huge ones!
Sorry you missed them..

Local attractions

What a lot there is to do around Fairwood Lakes's Westbury town and Wiltshire county location, from ancient gorges and ancient stones to exotic animal centres and racing car circuits.

Longleat House and Safari Park 10 miles from the park is a top pick for those who like Elizabethan architecture and/or wildlife, with 500 animals on a 9,000-acre Wiltshire countryside estate.

About 20 minutes away, lovely old Bath is famed most for its baths (funny, that), made popular by posh sorts in Victorian times, and for its Jane Austen Centre, a persuasively interesting house with museum and Regency tearoom. If you fancy doing something a bit different/more boastworthy, take to the skies above the city for a ride in a hot air balloon.

Even more famed is Stonehenge 30 minutes away, for hours' worth of pondering just why ancient peeps decided to haul these mammoth rocks to stand up. The visitor centre has some suggestions, along with 250 ancient objects and tools of Neolithic life.

All a bit too tame? Zip along to the motorsports of Castle Combe Circuit; tackle the sheer rock face and climb of Cheddar Gorge; watch the geegees hurtle along at Bath Racecourse, or take the kids to meet the witch at the Wookey Hole Caves.
