General

  • Peaceful and spectaculary scenic site with private fishing lakes
  • Fully refurbished in 2017: café, play areas and well-stocked shop
  • 10 miles from Longleat and 20 minutes from Bath

You might want to arrange things so you're able to stay here for quite some time... Family-friendly, pet-friendly and spectacularly scenic Fairwood Lakes is a peaceful and remote park under the Salisbury Plains, newly updated in 2017 following an extensive redevelopment. It guarantees excellent facilities, a warm welcome, first-rate accommodation and return-to-nature retreats set deep in countryside for couples and families.

This is a highly scenic site, close to lakes and woodland: come here to fish, to laze or to use it as a base for investigating the lush landscapes and ancient sights within easy driving distance (Bath is 20 minutes from base and Stonehenge within half an hour; the site is also within 10 miles of the fab Longleat House and Safari Park).

The heart of the park is its lovely lakes, with carp up to 27lb, silverfish and pike all here to catch (fishing permits can be purchased from reception). And if you don't fancy angling? Amble around the lakes instead, for a peaceful several hours of daydreaming and wildlife spotting, or lie back with a book while the kids let loose in the play areas... there are three on site, including a large soft play area (admission fee included in the pitch price); the Little Tikes outdoor adventure play area, specifically for toddlers, and an outdoor play area for ages three and up.

Among the swish redeveloped facilities is a new café, with wifi, an extensive decking area and a good range of freshly prepared breakfasts, sandwiches, light lunches, fresh coffees and homemade cakes to have in or take away. Special theme nights including summer barbecues and curry nights are held throughout high season.

Fairwood Lakes also has a small shop. Its refurbished amenities include dishwashing facilities, new toilet blocks, disabled toilets and chemical disposal points. A new amenities block was added in December 2017, with an individual disabled WC and shower wetroom.

A dog-friendly area is in the touring field.

    Great facilities for younger children

    Disliked:

We were put on the pitch next door the all the children’s facilities so after visiting the university open day, rather than sit out with the noise of all the children we decided to drive home. The pitch next to us had ladies in a tent that was attached to a campervan they talked very loudly into to small hours of our first night, so even though we were in a caravan we heard every word - other sites have a policy to keep guests quiet at by 10pm...

From the manager...

Hi There
Our soft play closes at 5 pm so I am surprised you heard the children post that time. Also our reception is open to help with these issues during the day and we would have loved to hear from you if you were not happy. At least if we are given the chance to make things right we will do our best. This could have been achieved by talking to either reception or calling our help number.
As for the ladies chatting we provide a helpline for our wardens to all our guests for this problem and the number is displayed around the park, and clearly illustrated in the welcome pack.
We don't eavesdrop into every closed up tent at night but every pitch should have privacy and thats why we have the mechanism on site for you to contact us 24/7.
We can control the site but I am afraid we cannot always control the humans!!!
You could have asked them politely to quieten down too.
Thank you for your review and thank you for the kind comments about the kids facilities.

The staff and on site play facilities as well as the cafe. Location is fantastic for visiting the local area and everything is only a 10min drive.

    Disliked:

The distance to bathroom and washing. The toilet block is located in the caravan area which seems pointless as most of them have their own toilets. We were at the bottom of the touring field meaning that we had a bit of a walk to the toilets and showers and washing up and laundry.
My only other concern was the a amount of wasps. There were no wasp traps in the seating areas and eating areas so as soon as your food arrived you were plagued by them. We ended up making our own for around the tent

We did not enjoy our stay here, it was noisy, dirty but has nice cafe 23/08/2018

The fishing lakes, the cafe and the closeness to Longleat

    Disliked:

Shower and toilet facilities were dirty and we very basic, it felt like it this site was so good on paper and yet when you looked below the surface it was not all it seemed. Showers and toilets were dirty the whole time we stayed - 3 nights and even after I told staff they were dirty nothing was done. The soap dispenser was empty for two days and only filled imy second time of asking.

From the manager...

Im really sorry you did not enjoy your stay. Our showers are cleaned twice a day and documented. The logs show this. Sometimes if the site is full between cleans we can suffer from dirt in the showers. However we always attend to this.
The 10 out of 10 review prior to yours ( Clean facilities, good pitch size. No queuing for showers even though only 3 for women and 3 for men. Great facilities for young children and nice cakes in cafe. Beautiful setting and fishing lake stunning.) was a same time stay.
Generally we have great feedback and I'm sorry in your case we were not able to provide you with this.
Please try us again!

Local attractions

What a lot there is to do around Fairwood Lakes's Westbury town and Wiltshire county location, from ancient gorges and ancient stones to exotic animal centres and racing car circuits.

Longleat House and Safari Park 10 miles from the park is a top pick for those who like Elizabethan architecture and/or wildlife, with 500 animals on a 9,000-acre Wiltshire countryside estate.

About 20 minutes away, lovely old Bath is famed most for its baths (funny, that), made popular by posh sorts in Victorian times, and for its Jane Austen Centre, a persuasively interesting house with museum and Regency tearoom. If you fancy doing something a bit different/more boastworthy, take to the skies above the city for a ride in a hot air balloon.

Even more famed is Stonehenge 30 minutes away, for hours' worth of pondering just why ancient peeps decided to haul these mammoth rocks to stand up. The visitor centre has some suggestions, along with 250 ancient objects and tools of Neolithic life.

All a bit too tame? Zip along to the motorsports of Castle Combe Circuit; tackle the sheer rock face and climb of Cheddar Gorge; watch the geegees hurtle along at Bath Racecourse, or take the kids to meet the witch at the Wookey Hole Caves.
