The floating Lodge "Eider"

General

  • Peaceful and spectaculary scenic site with private fishing lakes
  • Fully refurbished to include café, play areas and well-stocked shop
  • A 15-minute drive from Longleat and 20 minutes from Bath

You might want to arrange things so you're able to stay here for quite some time... Family-friendly, pet-friendly and spectacularly scenic Fairwood Lakes is a peaceful and remote park under the Salisbury Plains, newly updated in 2017 following an extensive redevelopment. It guarantees excellent facilities, a warm welcome, first-rate accommodation and return-to-nature retreats set deep in countryside for couples and families.

This is a highly scenic site, close to lakes and woodland: come here to fish, to laze or to use it as a base for investigating the lush landscapes and ancient sights within easy driving distance (Bath is 20 minutes from base and Stonehenge within half an hour; the site is also within 15 minutes of the fab Longleat House and Safari Park).

The heart of the park is its lovely lakes, with carp up to 27lb, silverfish and pike all here to catch (fishing permits can be purchased from reception). And if you don't fancy angling? Amble around the lakes instead, for a peaceful several hours of daydreaming and wildlife spotting, or lie back with a book while the kids let loose in the play areas... there are three on site, including a large soft play area (admission fee included in the pitch price); the Little Tikes outdoor adventure play area, specifically for toddlers, and an outdoor play area for ages three and up.

Among the swish redeveloped facilities is a café, with wifi, an extensive decking area and a good range of freshly prepared breakfasts, sandwiches, light lunches, fresh coffees and homemade cakes to have in or take away. Special theme nights including summer barbecues and curry nights are held throughout high season.

Fairwood Lakes also has a small shop. Its refurbished amenities include dishwashing facilities, new toilet blocks, disabled toilets and chemical disposal points. A new amenities block was added in December 2017, with an individual disabled WC and shower wetroom.

We were very happy with the site, our first stay and will definitely come back. It is set in a tranquil site, kept clean, facilities for the Children are excellent. The lakes are superb to.

    Disliked:

The showers were limited, no shelf to put your toiletries on and the timing of the shower spray wasn't long enough, difficult for ladies to wash and rinse their hair.

From the manager...

Great news
We are having new shower heads fitted and some shampoo stands
Hope to see you again soon
Thankyou for your constructive and kind review

    Separate pitches

    Disliked:

Toilets were dirty. Not cleaned. In the morning toiletseat very dirty from beneath. Same staines in the evening when we came back.. showers are full with chalk so water goes everywhere and all clothes get wet.. shower curtains are very unhygienic en mouldy.

No private wash basins and 2 toilets for all the woman on the site is not enough

    No water taps near pitches.

The rule on the site is quiet after 9 but stagparties are full on in the weekend.

Train coming by very very close to campsite. Starts in early morning till late.
    Every 15 minutes or so.

They advertise with food shop.. nothing there.. they advertise with cafe.. closes before 5 in the afternoon so when you are gone for the day.. and come back.. nothing there.

No WiFi on site... They advertise no WiFi in play area and cafe but there is nowhere WiFi.
    Internet connection is very poorly.

Stinging weeds everywhere so not very save for children.

From the manager...

Thanks for your words anonymous mature couple who have never written a review.
Having had a great set of reviews this was disappointing to receive. Mostly our family campers love our site and we find mature couples have nothing to do but to complain.. case in point here - it’s very difficult when they arrive having paid £6 per night in the ‘good old days, with their clip boards and if they can find fault they will.. note the train comment- yes we do have a railway line and about 10 trains pass a day but not every 15 minutes.
Please also note we do not allow stag parties on site and had none this weekend.. just another ludicrous comment designed to damage our business.
Our toilets are cleaned in the morning and in the evenings so we cannot always catch every member of the public who has foul toilet habits.. We do our best to clean our toilets all the time. Certainly we cannot follow everyone into the cubicles to check especially at a busy weekend.
Our shower curtains are not mouldy and this is just rubbish and each of our water taps are on pitches 1-7 and two taps situated in the touring field. Again a very incorrect comment.
Our cafe closes at 5 off peak and from July 20 th closed between 6-9 pm depending on the day of the week.
Are staff are great- we have 4-5 stars over most review sites and this review is just unfair to our staff- in our welcome pack if people have problems we have a 24 hour telephone and warden service that can be called to sort out any problem.
Finally a review from another customer on booking.com

Peaceful site with good sized secluded pitches where we were on the site. Beautiful lakes and kids enjoyed play park.

    Disliked:

Toilets could have been cleaned and checked more frequently for loo role. Showers would benefit a little shelf or additional hooks for wash bag belongings.

Staff at the reception and cafe were very helpful, friendly and made me feel very welcome. Lots of activities for children and the fishing lake area was lovely with tables and lots of lovely places for picnics. Feels secure with barrier. Lovely location and convenient for getting to the surrounding areas.

    Disliked:

Considering the high price of staying here, the touring site looked very neglected, grass had not been mowed and lots of weeds and growth on the hard standing. Really looked like no one cared. The grey waste area was dirty and full of dead leaves, no one had bothered to sweep. One fresh water tap was not working. The chemical waste area did not have a water supply for cleaning out cassette, it was located a few yards away, never had that before. Did not see one person from the site checking pitches for the whole week. Toilets were not very clean and looked neglected. Only two showers which I did not think was enough and the nozzles could do with a service and readjustment. The child changing unit in the ladies had dead flies and other insects on it for the whole week. Hair in the drainage area was only cleaned after day 3 of my stay. There was not a shop on site that sold essentials so a 2 mile trip to Tesco Express. It really did feel that the touring area was not given the love of the other areas.

From the manager...

Thanks for your comments. You missed the main chemical waste area which was on the map provided to you on check in. Our wardens walk the site morning and night and check all pitches. We are constantly battling the weeds I know!! At the moment they grow so fast with the heat and rain and we are on the grounds all the time. I have checked the water tap and they are all ok..Perhaps the lower master tap had been turned off by another user?
Price wise we are less expensive than the two nearest sites so I think expensive is a bit harsh!!
Thank you for your comments and we do value feedback

We enjoyed our 3 nights here in our touring caravan. We was on pitch no.1, we had no issues. Pitches are a spacious size & we enjoyed sitting outside on the grass. It was quite & peaceful. We was next to the play area & there is a train line that occassionally passes, but kids are kids & its nice for them to be playing, so no issues at all. We enjoyed nice hot showers each day. The young man we spoke to on arrival was very polite & friendly, and again 2 staff in the cafe area.

We visited several places & do not mind travelling a short distance to restaurances ect.

Would recommend, and would visit again.

Local attractions

What a lot there is to do around Fairwood Lakes's Westbury town and Wiltshire county location, from ancient gorges and ancient stones to exotic animal centres and racing car circuits.

About 20 minutes away, lovely old Bath is famed most for its baths (funny, that), made popular by posh sorts in Victorian times, and for its Jane Austen Centre, a persuasively interesting house with museum and Regency tearoom. If you fancy doing something a bit different/more boastworthy, take to the skies above in a hot air balloon.

Even more famed is Stonehenge 30 minutes away, for hours' worth of pondering just why ancient peeps decided to haul these mammoth rocks to stand up. The visitor centre has some suggestions, along with 250 ancient objects and tools of Neolithic life.

All a bit too tame? Zip along to the motorsports of Castle Combe Circuit; tackle the sheer rock face and climb of Cheddar Gorge; watch the geegees hurtle along at Bath Racecourse, or take the kids to meet the witch at the Wookey Hole Caves.
