  • Simple family-friendly Somerset campsite; pick your own pitch
  • On the edge of Timsbury, 20 minutes' drive from Bath and Wells
  • Firepits and wood available; 10 minutes' walk from the village centre
If you love looking out over lush green hills, but are also rather partial to being able to walk to the local pub, you’ll be in your element at Loves Hill Camping. This well-located Somerset spot is on the edge of the village of Timsbury – conveniently close to the village centre but just far away from the houses and cars to feel properly rural. This is an attractive and family-friendly spot where you’ll be able to relax by the firepit (available to hire on site, with logs on offer too) or take a 10-minute stroll to reach the village’s pub or fish and chip shop. There’s a supermarket there for supplies too, and bus stops to help you tour the area. There’s a laidback atmosphere here, with kids and dogs welcome and guests invited to choose their own pitch from the areas mown into the long grass. Facilities at this pop-up site include compost toilets, showers, a washing-up area, a shared fridge and charging facilities. You’re also welcome to set up a gazebo or awning to help keep the rain/sun off your pitch. This handy location isn’t all about access to the pub and shop; it’s also well placed for walks in the stunning scenery of the Mendip Hills and southern Cotswolds, or day trips to Bath, Wells, Bristol and a whole lot of excellent family attractions.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Loves Hill Camping is in a fantastic location for exploring both Bristol and Bath, making it a great base if you're travelling around this part of the country. The campsite itself is beautiful, peaceful and surrounded by stunning countryside views.

The facilities are simple but perfectly functional. There are compost toilets, and the showers are clean with lovely hot water. The washing-up facilities are cold water only, but were perfectly adequate for our 3 night stay.

The site manager is extremely friendly, affable and welcoming. There's a lovely little onsite shop where you can buy bacon rolls, teas and coffees, which is a really nice touch when you're camping. There's also a charging point where guests can charge phones and other devices, which we found incredibly useful.

There is a small village nearby with two shops for basic essentials, while Lidl and Sainsbury's are approximately a 14-minute drive away for a larger food shop.

Overall, a beautiful campsite with lovely views, a welcoming atmosphere and a particularly convenient location for visiting both Bath and Bristol.

Disliked Disliked

The surrounding local area wasn't particularly to my personal taste. There were quite a few abandoned-looking buildings and, if you're looking to explore on foot, there wasn't much for us to do within walking distance apart from visiting the local pub.

I was also travelling as a single parent with my 16-year-old daughter, who is still classed as a child/minor. The campsite charges £12 per person, and I personally felt it was a little steep to pay the same rate for a 16-year-old as for an adult. I think a reduced rate for children and young people would make the site more affordable for families, particularly single-parent households.

This is very much a personal preference rather than a criticism of the campsite itself, which we thoroughly enjoyed.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Loved how the pitches are spaced out into little group areas so everyone's not on top of each other. Quiet too. The owner came round and introduced himself and super friendly. Breakfast food available while I was there from 8.30-10.30am.

Disliked Nothing.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Nice big pitch all to yourself, super cheap, hot showers, the best style of camping toilet in my opinion - compost long drop. Short walk to nice pub and the cafe is so so good for breakfast. Felt safe there as a solo female camper. Everyone was really nice and they let me stay for another night that was unplanned.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Loved this little site so much! We only travelled about 35 minutes from home to stay here but could have been a million miles away, it was perfect. Toilets (composting) and showers were all clean and tidy, washing up area too. Horsebox open for hot drinks and breakfast in the mornings (we didn’t use but there was a queue both days which is a great sign)!
Love the rustic pitches, separated by long grass that gives a feeling of privacy. Did a delightful 9 mile walk from the site on the Saturday and drove to a nearby reservoir and did a 5 mile walk today. Highly recommend!

Disliked Nothing to dislike!

Local attractions

Getting out on foot or bikes is a great idea in this area – there are lots of lovely trails to try in the Mendip Hills or the Cotswolds, both designated National Landscapes. A steam train trip on the East Somerset Railway (25 minutes’ drive) is a good alternative for those looking for more leisurely ways to see the scenery – and don’t miss the chance to venture underground at Wookey Hole (25 minutes) too. It may be the countryside vibe that you’ve come here for, but the area’s cities are well worth exploring – and easy to get to. Bath (20 minutes), Wells (20 minutes) and Bristol (half an hour) all have plenty to offer for visitors, with historic sights, family attractions and great places to eat. There’s more history dotted around the area too, with the likes of Stanton Drew Circles and Cove (20 minutes) and Nunney Castle (35 minutes) to visit. As the kids are more likely to enjoy an animal attraction, it’s also worth noting places like Chew Valley Animal Park (20 minutes) and Longleat Safari Park (35 minutes).
