Basecamp at Mendip Activity Centre: Mendip Basecamp from above

General

  • Family-friendly site with a relaxed atmosphere on 100 acres of land
  • In the Mendip Hills, a five-minute bike ride from Thatchers Cider farm
  • Firepits and campfires encouraged; café-bar and outdoor activities

Fancy having the freedom to explore ancient woodland by day and settle in next to an open fire by night (but with the added bonus of hot showers and flushing loos)? Make Basecamp at Mendip Activity Centre your next spot for a getaway and all of the above shall be at your fingertips.

This hidden park with an off-grid feel is a top choice for folk who like to keep moving: it’s got an outdoor activity centre a five-minute walk away with rock climbing, caving, skiing, tobogganing, frisbee golf, abseiling, archery, rifle shooting, bushcraft, mountain biking and axe throwing on offer (for an extra fee).

All this plus 100 acres of land on site means outdoor playtimes, family ball games or just spreading out with a book on the grass are possible, plus a leisure centre with a gym and indoor pool is under five minutes’ drive if indoor activities are preferable.

Back at the park, food and drinks are on hand at the pop-up tavern, which serves up local ciders and ales along with pizzas, loaded fries and jacket potatoes every evening (it's also the place for hot drinks and a full English brekkie on a Sunday morning). A 24-hour garage and well-stocked shop are 10 minutes away by car for those who need to sort snacks and self-catering food.

A quick heads up if you’re planning on staying at the site: your tent or campervan needs to be under 2.7 metres high and no caravans or motorhomes are permitted because of access restrictions. Basecamp is accessed via a rural track which is driven at guests' own risk.

Please note

Minimum spacing of 3 metres between pitches.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Bookings must not be for more than 14 consecutive nights.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

The bunkhouses are a five-minute walk to the campsite, and a two-minute walk to the activity centre.

There is no access to the site for vehicles taller than 2.7m. Access to the site is along a steep country lane which may not be suitable for low riding or large vehicles.

We was going with class so kids was happy. At site will need more toilets around, showers and electricity for cold summer nights. Nice forest around but windy because top of the hill.

    Disliked:

Very hard ground, need to buy extra hooks. Kids skying side need to be repaired. For group was payed £240, but what i saw its not worth even half of that money. Price to high also. Was payed nearly 100 for the weekend and dont get nothing so price too high. For similar price in any devon or dorset site where we going, we getting much bigger, cleaner and better toilets, showers, kids playing area (not couple stones with few kg sand on the bottom and tided toys), swimming pool and some have saunas and electricity for space. All this include in ticket.

Lots of space, can camp where you like with Friends. You can hire a fire pit for reasonable price. Shop had most things you'll need. Friendly staff.

    Disliked:

No hot water for washing up. But just used my own kettle water, so not such a problem.
In the future an option for electric pitches would be a good edition?

Friendliness of staff. Pitch anywhere. Relaxed atmosphere. Convenience of onsite shop. USB charging station & freezer for ice packs. Giant sandpit was loved by my son. Access to beautiful walking trails. Showers were perfect temp & good pressure & big enough for an adult & small child. Amazing value for what you get. Good base location for visiting Weston & Cheddar.

    Disliked:

No hot water for dish washing- infact, the water was freezing! Had to wear gloves to avoid numb hands. Ended up using a lot of gas boiling up water for washing up as impossible to wash grease away otherwise.
Shop offers fresh coffee but some staff members didn’t know the difference between them or how to make them 😬 The shop doesn’t stock loaves of bread, just rolls.
Not a dislike but a heads up- access to facilities is always up/down very sloping, uneven ground. (I’m sure this is mentioned on their page).

Great location, just up a dirt track but all sign posted so easy go find, you check in and free to pitch where ever. We had a great view overlooking fields.
Facilities we're good, got a bit busy towards the weekend but nothing too bad.
The lodge was just a 5min walk from the campsite for food and drink.

Local attractions

Most of your time at this park is sure to be taken up immersing yourself in the outdoor adventures of the Mendip Activity Centre or skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing at the Mendip Snowsport Centre (five minutes’ walk), but there’s also a range of other pursuits to consider while in the area.

Set on cycling? Wheel your way along the Strawberry Line around a 10-minute ride away, an old railway between Cheddar and Yatton that‘s now a family-friendly path, making sure to drop by the Thatchers farm at the entry of the trail for sips of some famed cider (five minutes).

Check out the rest of the Mendips too, perhaps while meandering across Cheddar Gorge (15 minutes), Burrington Combe (10 minutes), or the lakes of Blagdon and Chew Valley (20 minutes).

Outside of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, wander Weston-super-Mare’s seafront and pier while sampling fish ‘n’ chips (20 minutes) and give Bristol a little attention, particularly the city’s historic harbour, suspension bridge and the Cabot Circus mall (half an hour).
