General

  • Family-friendly site with a relaxed atmosphere on 100 acres of land
  • In the Mendip Hills, a five-minute bike ride from Thatchers Cider farm
  • Firepits and campfires encouraged; café-bar and outdoor activities

Fancy having the freedom to explore ancient woodland by day and settle in next to an open fire by night (but with the added bonus of hot showers and flushing loos)? Make Basecamp at Mendip Activity Centre your next spot for a getaway and all of the above shall be at your fingertips.

This hidden park with an off-grid feel is a top choice for folk who like to keep moving: it’s got an outdoor activity centre a five-minute walk away with rock climbing, caving, skiing, tobogganing, frisbee golf, abseiling, archery, rifle shooting, bushcraft, mountain biking and axe throwing on offer (for an extra fee).

All this plus 100 acres of land on site means outdoor playtimes, family ball games or just spreading out with a book on the grass are possible, plus a leisure centre with a gym and indoor pool is under five minutes’ drive if indoor activities are preferable.

Back at the park, food and drinks are on hand at the pop-up tavern, which serves up local ciders and ales along with pizzas, loaded fries and jacket potatoes every evening (it's also the place for hot drinks and a full English brekkie on a Sunday morning). A 24-hour garage and well-stocked shop are 10 minutes away by car for those who need to sort snacks and self-catering food.

A quick heads up if you’re planning on staying at the site: your tent or campervan needs to be under 2.7 metres high and no caravans or motorhomes are permitted because of access restrictions. Basecamp is accessed via a rural track which is driven at guests' own risk.

    Upon arrival the check in process was quick and easy. The toilet and hot shower facilities were excellent. We had breakfast at the lodge at 8.30am before setting off which was perfect to set us up for our onward journey.

    Everything! Staff were amazing and loads of info (and free ciders!) at check in. The freedom to choose your pitch, the showers and toilets were immaculate. Our daughter loved the sandpit, and we loved the woodland walk to the lodge.

    The track that leads up to the campsite was just dry, loose stones and was full of holes. Not suitable for motorcycles, I was on a motorcycle. Lack of bins and showers poor.

    big site; could choose our pitch; logs placed around the site, to sit around our firepit; festival feel;

    as a suggestion for the management - as your site is split into sections, one could be a designated family-only area. I'm sure my children would have loved to have been surrounded with others for a kickabout etc.

    Disliked:

    long walk to toilets; temporary shower block; grass needed cutting; loads of flies!

    The huge Linden tree in the middle of the camp was definitely the star for children, my 3yo loved hanging there with the rest of the kids, I could check up on her without disturbing her play, which was great

Check out the rest of the Mendips too, perhaps while meandering across Cheddar Gorge (15 minutes), Burrington Combe (10 minutes), or the lakes of Blagdon and Chew Valley (20 minutes).

Outside of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, wander Weston-super-Mare’s seafront and pier while sampling fish ‘n’ chips (20 minutes) and give Bristol a little attention, particularly the city’s historic harbour, suspension bridge and the Cabot Circus mall (half an hour).
