Basecamp at Mendip Activity Centre

9.2

This park does not currently take bookings here on Pitchup.com.

General

  • Family-friendly site with a relaxed atmosphere on 100 acres of land
  • In the Mendip Hills, a five-minute bike ride from Thatchers Cider farm
  • Firepits and campfires encouraged; café-bar and outdoor activities

Fancy having the freedom to explore ancient woodland by day and settle in next to an open fire by night (but with the added bonus of hot showers and flushing loos)? Make Basecamp at Mendip Activity Centre your next spot for a getaway and all of the above shall be at your fingertips.

This hidden park with an off-grid feel is a top choice for folk who like to keep moving: it’s got an outdoor activity centre a five-minute walk away with rock climbing, caving, skiing, tobogganing, frisbee golf, abseiling, archery, rifle shooting, bushcraft, mountain biking and axe throwing on offer (for an extra fee).

All this plus 100 acres of land on site means outdoor playtimes, family ball games or just spreading out with a book on the grass are possible, plus a leisure centre with a gym and indoor pool is under five minutes’ drive if indoor activities are preferable.

Back at the park, food and drinks are on hand at the pop-up tavern, which serves up local ciders and ales along with pizzas, loaded fries and jacket potatoes every evening (it's also the place for hot drinks and a full English brekkie on a Sunday morning). A 24-hour garage and well-stocked shop are 10 minutes away by car for those who need to sort snacks and self-catering food.

A quick heads up if you’re planning on staying at the site: your tent or campervan needs to be under 2.7 metres high and no caravans or motorhomes are permitted because of access restrictions. Basecamp is accessed via a rural track which is driven at guests' own risk.

Space, relaxed, camp where you want (as long as 8m away), easy distance from South Wales, lots of opportunities for activities on site, sand pit kept little ones occupied, fires encouraged (and wanted).
Quality, yummy and reasonably priced food at the lodge.

    Disliked:

Lack of obvious direction signage to tent site (so followed our noses, not knowing we needed to go to 'Base camp' (needed the word camping - which in hind sight now seems obvious), but got there, beautiful surroundings.
Lack of obvious signage to path down etc (flags helped).
Cost for fires was the same for 2 days as 2 weeks (seems unfair).
Showers not ideal to get a couple of little ones in, or easy to use. A family one would be great.

Booking in tent with all its facilities. Good pitches, toilets, washing up areas.

    Disliked:

Showers only worked on hot if there were 2 of you using them.
The day after we booked we were sent an email from the site saying we could have booked for £2 per night... We'd booked for £11 per night so slightly miffed we didn't get the offer earlier

Nice big open field where we could set up our tent 2 gazebos and a friends tent, they had a marquee 2 min walk away with charging table a small shop with all the necessities u might of forgot including milk butter tea coffee snacks camping bits and bobs and a fridge with cold drinks plus a freezer with ice and a separate one for refreezing your ice packs.
There was a sand pit next to a large tree which kept the kids entertained for a short while but if I was to say a small park would be nice just to keep the kids occupied whilst we set up.
Fire pits could also be hired (£10) per stay plus 6 for wood which is cheaper than other places we have been, the only activities we did was the toboggan as we had 1 child a bit young for anything else but it was a good fun half an hour.
All in all we very much enjoyed our stay.

    Disliked:

I didn’t try them but the missus said the showers were a bit on the cold side and the water for washing up was cold

Local attractions

Most of your time at this park is sure to be taken up immersing yourself in the outdoor adventures of the Mendip Activity Centre or skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing at the Mendip Snowsport Centre (five minutes’ walk), but there’s also a range of other pursuits to consider while in the area.

Set on cycling? Wheel your way along the Strawberry Line around a 10-minute ride away, an old railway between Cheddar and Yatton that‘s now a family-friendly path, making sure to drop by the Thatchers farm at the entry of the trail for sips of some famed cider (five minutes).

Check out the rest of the Mendips too, perhaps while meandering across Cheddar Gorge (15 minutes), Burrington Combe (10 minutes), or the lakes of Blagdon and Chew Valley (20 minutes).

Outside of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, wander Weston-super-Mare’s seafront and pier while sampling fish ‘n’ chips (20 minutes) and give Bristol a little attention, particularly the city’s historic harbour, suspension bridge and the Cabot Circus mall (half an hour).
