Dorothy Goes Glamping: Safari tent

General

  • Off-grid glamping site in secluded Somerset countryside near Yeovil
  • A 40-minutes drive to the Cerne Giant, and Glastonbury half an hour
  • Gas stoves and hot tubs on site; pub and shop within 10 minutes’ drive

Exclusive in location and yet hugely inclusive in style, Dorothy Goes Glamping is tucked away in secluded countryside near Yeovil in Somerset. With a remit to be welcoming to guests of all persuasions, the secluded woodland pitches offer an off-grid, eco-friendly break and the chance to disconnect from technology.

Hen parties, stag weekends, couples on loved-up date nights – all are welcome here (along with their dogs, of course). Accommodation is in a range of glamping pods, with luxurious extras including hot tubs (book in advance; extra charges apply) heated by woodfired burners, proper beds and a vintage trunk for storing your stuff away. A welcome hamper contains cutlery, crockery and mugs as well as washing-up utensils.

Separate shower and toilets blocks are steps away from the pods – but remember to pack a torch as there’s no light after dark. Thanks to that lack of light, you can take in the starry sky and you might also get to see deer and badgers flitting around after dark.

How to keep fed and watered? Outside each lodging is a barbecue (wood and coal can be bought on site if needed) and picnic bench for cosy nights around the firepit, plus a two-burner gas stove for outdoor cooking and dining. Pick up basics at the handy shop in Queen Camel (10 minutes’ drive) for mealtimes, or head to the pub in Sparkford (five minutes) instead.

Please note

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, customers can amend their dates with the campsite/holiday park free of charge for all stays up to, and including, Monday 31 October 2022.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

A beautiful, organic, natural campsite. Darryl was very warm, welcoming and thoughtful to what we may need. The fairy lights and decorative touches really add a magical feel come sunset. The no WiFi was excellent, allowing quality family time with the teenagers.

    Disliked:

That we only stayed one night.

This is wild camping at its finest!! Fire pits, BBQs remote and 9 acres of woodlands...... Darryl the site owner is AMAZING nothing is of any trouble tended to our every need was such a fantastic host. Has a great vision for sustainability. We celebrated my husbands 40th here with all our family, everyone of them enjoyed there stay here and thought that Darryl had made our stay so wonderful. The hot tubs were an added bonus and made the trip super special, the kids loved it and so did the adults, extremely warm and stayed this way for aggggges in to the night. There is a Hot tub area for 2 (couples secluded area) all light by solar powered fairy lights and a bigger area for more guest (6) which is ideal for party's, and larger gatherings as there is a gas BBQ here fire bit and seated area. This truly was a magical stay cation. We all loved it so so much and we're sad to be leaving

Darryl has a great vision for sustainable living. He has harnessed solar power to make the whole site come alive at sunset. We loved the wood fired hot tub and certainly came out "lobster" like as it was so lovely and hot. There was lots of hot water in the shower and for washing up too.
We loved the site, it is a special place.
For teenagers, I would say that it would be wise to journey off site and visit RNAS yeovilton and Yeovil has a thriving city centre.

What a great find! Stumbled on to this site and booked not realising it was their first weekend of opening - we wouldnt have known!

Katie and Mick were super welcoming, leading us through the natural woodland to our yurt which was exactly what we expected - minimal but perfect.

The whole site only has 12 pods so very secluded and quiet - at night as the stars and animals come out to play the solar lights lead you through the trees to a magnificent wood fired tub which was worth every penny… We even stayed up and went for another dip at 2am!

This is a great setup with all the right stuff - even just little things like the stove and cutlery etc on site is another thing off your mind and we were blown away how good it was especially for a brand new site. Good work guys we’ll see you again!

    Disliked:

There’s very little to dislike about this site! It’s a brand new venture and I expect they’ll have everything ironed out super quick! It was lucky we’d taken a few more blankets as it was cold - but it was march!

The only very slight downside is you can still hear the distant dual carriageway when the wind is blowing that way, but a super minor point.

A lovely 9 acre woodland site, which we had to ourselves and our two dogs. Very dog friendly, both dogs enjoyed the freedom of the entire site. First night, lit the fire pit, with wood supplied by the site manager Darrell, wrapped the spuds in foil and chucked on the fire, then off to the hot tub, heated by a wood burner. Return to the fire for Hot Jacket Spuds, Wine and the sounds of nature and a crackling fire whilst looking up at the stars with no light pollution, BEAUTIFUL. A very good nights sleep in a comfy bed in a warm and snug Yurt. Awoke to the bird song then a stumble outside to light the stove for coffee.

Local attractions

The cool galleries and indie shops of Bruton (20 minutes’ drive) are worth a morning’s snoop, while mellow-stone Castle Cary (10 minutes) has a great Tuesday food market. Yeovil is the spot for a big night out in pubs, and Glastonbury (both half an hour) turns up shops selling joss sticks and jewellery, as well as the atmospheric abbey.

Exploring around the site takes you to the crumbling, hilltop Cadbury Castle (10 minutes) for spectacular views over Somerset. More hiking trails lead to the colossal, chalk Cerne Giant (40 minutes) sprawled across a hillside and off uncertain heritage. The Wessex Ridgeway (45 minutes) also passes a multitude of neolithic and Iron Age monuments that are free to explore on your hiking adventures.

Closer to home and coming up to date, the Haynes International Motor Museum (five minutes) has a nostalgic mix of vintage Bentleys, F1 cars and bikes, while virtual-reality flights in an iconic Concorde and a collection of World War II fighter planes make the Fleet Air Arm Museum (10 minutes) a must-see too.

  • Haynes International Motor Museum (0.9 miles)
