Wookey Farm: Rope swings in the pitching meadow

General

  • Marked out pitches or pick your own: site bordered by the River Axe
  • Farm animals, central campfire area and rope swings
  • Pubs, café and shop half a mile away; Wookey Hole 2.5 miles; Wells 3.5

What a bewitching place. And most especially for kids: Wookey Farm, a couple of miles from the famed Wookey Hole Caves (and their famed witch), is a tiptop option for small sorts and their owners, with loads of space to run around and a menagerie of animals to coo over.

Older offspring will be sizzling with excitement on hearing that they can stoke flames and get social at the communal campfire area, while bigger folk will probably be content to bring along a firepit and laze idly on the family pitch, taking in the views of the Mendip Hills and towards Hembury and Yarley hills… Off site, it's three and a half miles from the farm to cutely compact Wells, six miles to Glastonbury, and a drive of 45 minutes to the coast at Weston-super-Mare.

The site is on a small, family-run goat farm where guests are most welcome to meet the menagerie (sheep, pigs, hens and a donkey live here too) and find out all about running a farm. All pitches are in a level two-and-a-half-acre space with marked pitches or in an overflow meadow bordered by the River Axe: you can opt to be as mixed in or as far away as you like. Splashing, paddling and critter spotting can all be had in the river, as can back and forthing merrily on the rope tyre swing over the water (more swings are around the site if this seems slightly too hair raising).

Wookey Farm is an eco-friendly site, with emphasis on keeping things as natural as possible. Facilities are basic but well kept: four compost toilets and washbasins, cleaned twice a day; a washing-up area with water tap alongside, and plenty of facilities for sorting your rubbish (recycling and food waste contributions are keenly welcomed).

For those barbecue supplies, the farm is just down the lane from Wookey village's café, shop and three pubs.

Wookey Farm was a lovely place to camp. We had a stream just behind some trees by our pitch, and it was lovely to hear it murmuring quietly in the night.

The camping facilities were basic but completely adequate and very clean.

It was extremely peaceful, and we enjoyed watching some of the birds that were around us in the trees including a Greater Spotted Woodpecker pecking away at the tree trunks.

It was a great place to camp while exploring the Somerset Levels on our bikes.

I'd definitely go back and would recommend it.

Great unspoilt site well located close to Wells, Cheddar and Glastonbury. This is exactly our sort of camp site, simple and unpretentious. The farm setting was great too and the children had plenty to space to run around and make new friends. Pitches were unmarked but at the time we stayed there was plenty of room. The site was very clean and had the best waste and recycling segregation I have ever seen when camping, which is a subject close to my heart. Everyone on site was respectful and followed the rules, nice and quiet after 10 pm.

    Disliked:

Just a couple of minor points. We were meeting up half way with some friends. I asked some simple questions when I first booked i.e. could we have adjoining pitches, could we erect a small tent instead of an awning ? I didn't get a response so we were a little uncertain of arrangements prior to arrival. We did however get a generic e-mail prior to arrival providing further instruction. In the end it wasn't a problem as the pitching arrangements were all very relaxed.

The compost toilet and washing up blocks were great little units, very sustainable and immaculately clean. I did think however that 4 toilets on a field that size was a little under specced especially as the field was relatively quiet when we stayed. Perhaps consider a separate mens' urinal "shed" at each unit ?

Eco-friendly site with clean facilities and spacious pitches20/10/2020

  • Electric optional grass pitch (large)

  • Liked:

A welcoming, safe site. We stayed in the field with electric hookup and each pitch was spacious with a little fire pit area and a picnic bench. The recycling facilities were great, even food waste recycling is offered. The goats and donkey kept our toddler entertained and the honesty shop was a bonus. The compost toilets were clean. Not too far to walk for drinking water.

    Disliked:

A small inconvenience was the lack of hot water on tap for washing-up, but remember this is a basic campsite. A space for baby-changing would be a welcome addition.

We had nearly the whole area to our selves the first two nights. It rained but we still enjoyed the stay.

    Disliked:

Dogs barking on and off all night, setting my two dogs off. I Understand that’s not the owners fault and this was the only fault we had.
