Wookey Farm: Pitching meadow centre of photo

General

  • Marked-out pitches or pick your own: site bordered by the River Axe
  • Wookey Hole 2.5 miles; Wells 3.5 miles
  • Farm animals, rope swings and on-site farm shop; pub/café half a mile

What a bewitching place. And most especially for kids: Wookey Farm, a couple of miles from the famed Wookey Hole Caves (and their famed witch), is a tiptop option for small sorts and their owners, with loads of space to run around and a menagerie of animals to coo over.

Older offspring will be sizzling with excitement on hearing that they can stoke flames and get social at the communal campfire area, while bigger folk will probably be content to bring along a firepit and laze idly on the family pitch, taking in the views of the Mendip Hills and towards Hembury and Yarley hills… Off site, it's three and a half miles from the farm to cutely compact Wells, six miles to Glastonbury, and a drive of 45 minutes to the coast at Weston-super-Mare.

The site is on a small, family-run goat farm where guests are most welcome to meet the menagerie (sheep, pigs, hens and a donkey live here too) and find out all about running a farm. All pitches are in a level two-and-a-half-acre space with marked pitches or in an overflow meadow bordered by the River Axe: you can opt to be as mixed in or as far away as you like. Splashing, paddling and critter spotting can all be had in the river, as can back and forthing merrily on the rope tyre swing over the water (more swings are around the site if this seems slightly too hair-raising).

Wookey Farm is an eco-friendly site, with emphasis on keeping things as natural as possible. Facilities are basic but well kept: four compost toilets and washbasins, cleaned twice a day; a washing-up area with water tap alongside; and plenty of facilities for sorting your rubbish (recycling and food waste contributions are keenly welcomed).

For those barbecue supplies, the farm is just down the lane from Wookey village's café, shop and three pubs. There's also an on-site farm shop selling the farm's own goat's cheese, goat's milk and meat, along with alcohol, snacks and gifts.

Please note

Loved the open space, farm was really lovely to see the goats and pet them. River onsite with rope swings were a bonus

    Disliked:

Compost loos were not pleasant. Basic hole in the ground but a wooden seat surround meant soaked in urine to sit on. However it was the heatwave when we visited which didnt help.

First time trip for us in our (new to us) motorhome. Loads of space on the field for the kids to play and family friendly with the swings and shallow river round the back of the field for paddling. We saw some donkeys on the way in but didn't explore that further.

Drinking water available on tap (shame I forget to take a hose and had to use several bucket loads to fill the tank in the van) and some basic washing and dish washing facilities alongside the compost toilets which were clean.

All of it ! It was a lovely place we loved the animals the wild bunnies running around the swings and the stream the coffee and shop. My children loved the goats I liked all the effort made with recycling. There was no faffing around to book in you can pull up anywhere and set up camp. There was so much room and I felt my children where safe to play out the feild and in the stream. We would definitely come back here.

Lots of space, pitch where you want. super clean composting toilets and the river (especially given the heat). Oh and especially the goats!!

    Disliked:

Not necessarily campsites fault, but other pitches were young families, so campsite silent after sundown, and noisy from 6am. Not best suited for adults and a couple of teens that while not noisy, like to sit round the campfire after dark and chat, and like to enjoy the vibe of others doing the same.

We’ll organised, natural, peaceful and clean site. Booked in advance, clear information on arrival thanks to a welcome chalkboard telling us where to pitch. Plenty of space and level pitches.
The village is a quiet 10 minute stroll, easy for dining out.

The location was excellent. The pub was only a 5 minute walk away and then it was only a short drive to the main shops and the caves. The river rubbing behind was really cool and the kids loved walking through it. The farm shop was really good too and sold goat burgers and sausages which I had never tried before and they were delicious. Also the kids saw goats being milked for the first time thanks to the farm, it was really fun to watch. The owners were really helpful and even lent us a cool box with freezer blocks for our food. Overall the campsite was clean, spacious and a pleasure to stay at. We will definitely be returning!
