  • Marked-out pitches or pick your own: site bordered by the River Axe
  • Wookey Hole 2.5 miles; Wells 3.5 miles
  • Farm animals, rope swings and on-site farm shop; pub/café half a mile
What a bewitching place. And most especially for kids: Wookey Farm, a couple of miles from the famed Wookey Hole Caves (and their famed witch), is a tiptop option for small sorts and their owners, with loads of space to run around and a menagerie of animals to coo over. Older offspring will be sizzling with excitement on hearing that they can stoke flames and get social at the communal campfire area, while bigger folk will probably be content to bring along a firepit and laze idly on the family pitch, taking in the views of the Mendip Hills and towards Hembury and Yarley hills… Off site, it's three and a half miles from the farm to cutely compact Wells, six miles to Glastonbury, and a drive of 45 minutes to the coast at Weston-super-Mare. The site is on a small, family-run goat farm where guests are most welcome to meet the menagerie (sheep, pigs, hens and a donkey live here too) and find out all about running a farm. All pitches are in a level two-and-a-half-acre space with marked pitches or in an overflow meadow bordered by the River Axe: you can opt to be as mixed in or as far away as you like. Splashing, paddling and critter spotting can all be had in the river, as can back and forthing merrily on the rope tyre swing over the water (more swings are around the site if this seems slightly too hair-raising). Wookey Farm is an eco-friendly site, with emphasis on keeping things as natural as possible. Facilities are basic but well kept: four compost toilets and washbasins, cleaned twice a day; a washing-up area with water tap alongside; and plenty of facilities for sorting your rubbish (recycling and food waste contributions are keenly welcomed). For those barbecue supplies, the farm is just down the lane from Wookey village's café, shop and three pubs. There's also an on-site farm shop selling the farm's own goat's cheese, goat's milk and meat, along with alcohol, snacks and gifts.

Meadow non-electric grass pitch

Liked It was easy to pitch up, with no need to find a staff member to check in. there was loads of space and other campers were friendly. I will definitely be using that campsite again as I go regularly to Wookey.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (small)

Liked We loved the campsite, lovely and quiet. Our pitch was a small non electric pitch on field 1 and was a little clearing in amongst the trees which was ideal in the warm weather. Compost loos were nice. We loved the animals in site and the lovely little shop. We enjoyed paddling in the shallow river running through the campsite.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (small)

Liked Fantastic site with the perfect pitches on campsite 1. Animals, streams and a pub all in walking distance. Fantastic value for money.
Wells 5 mins drive, Cheddar 10 mins drive & Glastonbury 15 mins drive. Great base to explore Somerset.
Really enjoyed the goats being milked and the feeding of the goats and pigs in the morning with the children.

Disliked Nothing.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (small)

Liked The whole place was exactly what we needed.

Basic and loads of nature to explore. We were meant to stay in campsite 1, but I read the sign wrong on arrival and ended up in campsite 2, BIG open field… Was a brilliant mistake as we pitched up under a tree with a swing and right next to the river. The whole site felt safe for kids to wonder.

Gutted we couldn’t stay longer… Next time!

Disliked Longer opening times on the shop and more stock.

We did purchase some frozen goat meat though and look forward to trying it.

Liked Our little pitch was right in the trees and we loved it. Especially liked being so close to the farm animals. The little camp fires dotted round were perfect and great access to the river with the dogs

Meadow non-electric grass pitch

Liked Beautiful, peaceful spot for a night away from home (we only live down the road but any excuse to get away and we'll come here). Lovely walks right on the doorstep. Love a site that doesn't bother you when you arrive or leave, and everyone seemed very respectful of each other's space and peace. Compost loos well managed and even on a baking hot day, don't smell or cause any issues. Woke early beause the dog needed a trip to the loo, and it was absolute heaven to quietly stroll around the field (we were in field 2) before anyone else had emerged from their tents/vans. Rather than going back to bed, I got my chair out and just sat watching the sky turn pink and the light slowly creep across the field. Obviously we were lucky with the weather, but the peace and quiet would be great at any time. Highly recommend!

Disliked Nothing!

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Location makes this site good for visiting chedder gorge & caves etc we stayed on campsite 1 far less busy than campsite 2 which was ok , kids loved the farm animals and theres handy little shop , very clean flat pitches nice size .

Disliked Fire pits were unusable as there between pitch’s and ppl’s tents or cars were literally a couple of feet away making them completely unusable only a couple of ppl used the fire pits on empty pitch’s , we couldn't the compostable toilet's there probably the nicest & cleanest compostable loo’s iv ever seen but my god the smell is enough to knock a horse out theres no sawdust just pure sawage and two full tanks just sitting outside made the smell even worse with the slightest breeze you could smell them and we werent camp no where near , it 100% needs sawdust of something everyone was complaining about them , also not the site owners fault but lack of presence means some campers who were in groups literally turn feral we had kids screaming and running around well past quiet time adults starting there cars shinning there led headlights into our tent while blowing air beds up 10:30 at night woke both my children , hitting cars with footballs and frisbees , playing music half the night , loudly arguing as other campers mentioned to me if someone popped in just to check on things now & then it might deter ppl from acting so badly , im glad we only stayed a weekend lovely site pity about the toilets & fire pits & some unruly guests

From the manager: Hi,
I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your stay at Wookey farm. We add the sawdust ourselves, twice a day. This is to avoid blockages in the urine pipe as unfortunately that kept happening when we allowed campers (and children) to put their own dust in. Other campers have reported no smell from our system or have complemented them on being the best compost loos they've ever used but I appreciate this heat hasn't helped and everyone has their own reaction to them.
I am sorry you were disturbed by other campers - we do pop around and try and take note of things when cleaning the toilets but I'm sorry that on your weekend, there were noisy and inconsiderate campers.

Local attractions

The farm is within easy reach of many top spots as well as Wookey Hole Caves, Glastonbury, Wells and Weston-super-Mare: spectacular Cheddar Gorge is 20 minutes' drive away, Longleat and Bath within 50, and Bristol just under an hour. Quieter times await around the region's walks, such as along the 30 miles of the West Mendip Way running from Wells via Wookey to the sea at Uphill, or the Strawberry Line (also 30 miles), a traffic-free route across Somerset from Shepton Mallet to Clevedon. Closer to home, amble along the River Axe flowing through the farm. Till ringers and fashion fans should take their wallets to Clarks Village, 20 minutes away, for outlet shopping and the Shoe Museum.
