  • Wookey Hole 2.5 miles; Wells 3.5 miles
  • Farm animals, rope swings and on-site farm shop; pub/café half a mile
What a bewitching place. And most especially for kids: Wookey Farm, a couple of miles from the famed Wookey Hole Caves (and their famed witch), is a tiptop option for small sorts and their owners, with loads of space to run around and a menagerie of animals to coo over. Older offspring will be sizzling with excitement on hearing that they can stoke flames and get social at the communal campfire area, while bigger folk will probably be content to bring along a firepit and laze idly on the family pitch, taking in the views of the Mendip Hills and towards Hembury and Yarley hills… Off site, it's three and a half miles from the farm to cutely compact Wells, six miles to Glastonbury, and a drive of 45 minutes to the coast at Weston-super-Mare. The site is on a small, family-run goat farm where guests are most welcome to meet the menagerie (sheep, pigs, hens and a donkey live here too) and find out all about running a farm. All pitches are in a level two-and-a-half-acre space with marked pitches or in an overflow meadow bordered by the River Axe: you can opt to be as mixed in or as far away as you like. Splashing, paddling and critter spotting can all be had in the river, as can back and forthing merrily on the rope tyre swing over the water (more swings are around the site if this seems slightly too hair-raising). Wookey Farm is an eco-friendly site, with emphasis on keeping things as natural as possible. Facilities are basic but well kept: four compost toilets and washbasins, cleaned twice a day; a washing-up area with water tap alongside; and plenty of facilities for sorting your rubbish (recycling and food waste contributions are keenly welcomed). For those barbecue supplies, the farm is just down the lane from Wookey village's café, shop and three pubs. There's also an on-site farm shop selling the farm's own goat's cheese, goat's milk and meat, along with alcohol, snacks and gifts.

Meadow non-electric grass pitch

Liked Beautiful location and views. Plenty of space between pitches to feel like you've got privacy. The stream is great and it attracted some stunning wildlife. Goats on site are great! We enjoyed visiting them lots. We will absolutely be back!

Disliked Unfortunately, the shop opened 10am-12pm daily which meant we missed it entirely. It would be great if it could have opened for a bit early evening.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked The site itself, lake and rope swings was a nice touch. Lots of happy healthy animals around and friendly staff. The owner was friendly and efficient and understanding of us needing to leave early. Can’t fault it. Also a really good location for local attractions and places to go.

Disliked The compost toilet and being unable to shower. The toilet was a personal view It was my first time using one.

Liked Freedom to camp as a family group in campsite 2, spacious level field, lovely farm shop (particularly enjoyed delicious sausages and goat burgers and local beers), friendly owners. Grandkids loved playing in the stream and visiting the animals.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Loved the quiet setting, big pitches with trees and privacy, kids adored feeding goats, water taps available easily, garbage and recycling right at each pitch, and close to Wookey Hole and other locations. Would love to come back here sometime!

Disliked A minor thing but there was no obvious place for drive over drain or hoses for grey water disposal that we could find - if you had a caravan with tank you could put it in the toilet disposal - dishwashing sinks went into the bushes (so we took our grey water with us).

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi,
Thanks for the review. We suggest just letting the grey water run out into the hedge.
Hope to see you again, Sarah

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Me and my girls absolutely loved Wookey Farm. The pitch was perfect with our own campfire area and bench, close to the toilet and had lots of space for the kids to play. The animals on the site where friendly and we loved saying hello to them everyday.
The stream was perfect for cooling down in the hot weather we had and the addition of the swings made it extra special for the kids. The farm shop had some lovely local items in and the owner was always on call if needed and opened up when I needed to swap over my cool packs for the cool box. The site is close to Wookey Hole caves which was a great day out and only a 20 minute drive to Cheddar gorge, also a great day out. You could easily walk into the village where there was pubs and a little market shop too.
We will definitely be back again! Thank you for a great base for our holiday!

Meadow non-electric grass pitch

Liked Great space. The kids loved watching the goat milking in the morning and visiting the pigs and alpacas. The stream was also a hit. A really lovely paddling stream!

Disliked On the particular day we visited it was busier than usual as there was a group of lovely kids on DofE but they did quiet down by 10.30 which was good. On reflection we should have paid for electric hook up to go into the other on grid field!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi,
Glad you liked our campsite. I'm sorry you were disturbed but noise. It only happens about once ayear that I have a Dof E group and it happened to be at the end of term so was really busy. I'll make sure they come at a quieter time in future.

Local attractions

The farm is within easy reach of many top spots as well as Wookey Hole Caves, Glastonbury, Wells and Weston-super-Mare: spectacular Cheddar Gorge is 20 minutes' drive away, Longleat and Bath within 50, and Bristol just under an hour. Quieter times await around the region's walks, such as along the 30 miles of the West Mendip Way running from Wells via Wookey to the sea at Uphill, or the Strawberry Line (also 30 miles), a traffic-free route across Somerset from Shepton Mallet to Clevedon. Closer to home, amble along the River Axe flowing through the farm. Till ringers and fashion fans should take their wallets to Clarks Village, 20 minutes away, for outlet shopping and the Shoe Museum.
