The Lorax Patch: Market garden and polytunnel

General

  • Small off-grid farm campsite two miles from Wells
  • A 10-minute drive from Glastonbury; Cheddar 20 minutes
  • Fresh eggs, fruit and veg available; campfires welcome

Off-grid adventure awaits in rural Somerset at The Lorax Patch, a friendly little site just two miles south of the cathedral city of Wells. There's a lot to like about this family-friendly farm, from the little stream that runs through it to the cute animals or the fresh eggs, veg and fruit that are regularly available to guests.

The facilities here are on the simpler side, with composting loos and a single hot shower, but what The Lorax Patch lacks in amenities, it makes up for in freedom. Here, you can be sure you'll have the space to pitch up at a good distance from your nearest neighbour, and all spots come with their own firepit and picnic table.

Any kids you bring along for the ride will be sure to experience that same freedom too, as there's a stream they can explore a short walk away. Adventures further afield are also easily sorted, as a footpath runs through the site, and a nearby cycle path connects the place up with Wells, which you can reach quickly and safely in just a few minutes by bike.

Please note

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Bookings must not be for more than 28 consecutive nights.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

A well thought out campsite and love there are only a few pitches within the meadows so quiet and peaceful with the feeling of having you own little area. Great views and feeling of being remote but not far from Wells for essentials.

Anyone reading put of with the car being away from the pitch need not worry. You can drive to your pitch to unload your gear and pack away after so don’t need to worry about carrying everything. Only a short walk to the car park but makes the site better for it.

Like there are no lights on site as on a clear night the star gazing must be amazing just typical we have cloud and rain!

    Disliked:

    Nothing to dislike. Great campsite.

Just a couple of suggestions be good if some hooks or shelf in showers to hang up clothes/towel and as it rained when we stayed be nice if sinks/washing up area was under cover.

From the manager...

Thanks so much Nathan, please come again!
We are installing some lovely home made hooks in the shower this week :-)

Everything! The location is perfect, close enough to Wells but far away enough to get a good nature fix.

The site is beautiful, the pitches are well spaced and maintained with plenty of room. It was so peaceful and quiet and we felt able to fully relax.

It rained the night we stayed but a short drive away we found shelter in The Sheppey (highly recommend!)

The facilities were good and well thought out. The hosts were really lovely and helpful. 10/10 would love to visit again :-)

    Disliked:

Nothing! One teeny tiny suggestion would be hooks on the bathroom doors to hang up your torch.

From the manager...

Many thanks Emily, lovely review. Hooks are being installed in the shower this week :-)

If this campsite were to be in Bake Off it would get a handshake. In Bake off professionals a love it, love it, love it and a boom. On Pottery Throw Down Keith would be in tears for hours. Needless to say we fell in love with this site. If you like space, peace and being one with nature dear reader then it's likely you will as well. If you like flushing loos, electric hook up and a shop then you won't but it might eventually tempt you away from the dark side (with a torch).

what a beautiful campsite, very well kept ,communication was impeccable, Gabe was easy to get hold of if you needed anything..shower was so clean with openings at the top so the sun shone right through as I took my shower, the singing of the birds and bleating just added to the experience. The added bonus of a picnic bench and fire pit..Highly recommend

The set up was very simple and effective, within easy reach of lots of local attractions and places to eat. There were toilets and washing up facilities. There is also a shower with hot water. Very small camp site with 5 pitches, so made you feel like it was your little piece of Somerset for the weekend. The owner was very welcoming and made sure that we were comfortable, he even visited us when the weather became a little challenging and offered to help us secure our site. All sites have a fire pit and picnic bench with are very useful. A great three days had by myself, family and friends. Will definitely visit again.

Local attractions

Wells (five minutes' drive/a few minutes' cycle), the smallest city in England, packs in a good number of top tourist attractions for its size. The main event for most will probably be the cathedral, built in 1175, which towers over the surrounding buildings, but other sights include the moated Bishop's Palace and Vicars' Close, commonly held to be the oldest residential street in Europe.

Within a few miles of Wells, you can climb to the top of Glastonbury Tor (10 minutes) or explore the town's many independent shops, pick your way between the rocks and hike up Cheddar Gorge (20 minutes) or head underground to explore the caves and caverns at Wookey Hole (20 minutes), one of the many interesting geological features on this side of the Mendip Hills.

Venturing a little bit further afield opens up more possibilities – you could explore the stunning World Heritage Site that is Bath city centre (45 minutes), drive on a mini safari past lions, hippos and wolves at Longleat (40 minutes) or pack your bucket and spade and explore the Somerset coast at Burnham-on-Sea (40 minutes) or Brean (50 minutes).

Must see

  • Wells Cathedral (1.2 miles)
  • Ebbor Gorge National Nature Reserve (2.2 miles)
  • Wookey Hole Caves & Papermill (2.6 miles)

National Trust

  • West Pennard Court Barn (4.3 miles)
  • King John's Hunting Lodge (9.9 miles)
