The Lorax Patch: Market garden and polytunnel

General

  • Small off-grid farm campsite two miles from Wells
  • A 10-minute drive from Glastonbury; Cheddar 20 minutes
  • Fresh eggs, fruit and veg available; campfires welcome

Off-grid adventure awaits in rural Somerset at The Lorax Patch, a friendly little site just two miles south of the cathedral city of Wells. There's a lot to like about this family-friendly farm, from the little stream that runs through it to the cute animals or the fresh eggs, veg and fruit that are regularly available to guests.

The facilities here are on the simpler side, with composting loos and a single hot shower, but what The Lorax Patch lacks in amenities, it makes up for in freedom. Here, you can be sure you'll have the space to pitch up at a good distance from your nearest neighbour, and all spots come with their own firepit and picnic table.

Any kids you bring along for the ride will be sure to experience that same freedom too, as there's a stream they can explore a short walk away. Adventures further afield are also easily sorted, as a footpath runs through the site, and a nearby cycle path connects the place up with Wells, which you can reach quickly and safely in just a few minutes by bike.

A small but lovely, peaceful site. Only 4 tent pitches, 2 yurts and a shepherds hut but these are all given plenty of space so that you don't feel at all crowded. The site is off the main roads, and there is a low level of traffic noise but this is difficult to avoid anywhere.
Facilities are basic but kept clean - compost loos, a single shower and hand wash facilities all provided with earth friendly soaps. There is a nature's alarm clock, with a cockle doodle doo at sunrise, but if you get up at this time you can also likely see the hares running around the site (also in the evening if you're quiet and still enough).
No wifi - but that's a good thing!
Close by access to both Wells and Glastonbury, and easy cycle distance from the RSPB reserves at Ham Wall/Shapwick Heath.
All in all, an amazing place to stay if you just want to relax and enjoy a bit of peace and quiet in the Somerset countryside.

Lovely quiet, spacious site, lovely place to chill out, relax and read a book, or, in the evening, sit around the fire and stare at the stars. Remote enough that any noises are mostly nature.

Surrounding area is great for siteseeing, walking and lots of great places to eat.

The site itself is very well thought out, well laid out and seems to be ever evolving.

The space, the beautiful surroundings, easy 20 walk into Wells, the location, the bench table and chairs provided. Loved the place.

    Disliked:

Only improvements would be access to freezer for freezer packs and being able to charge mobile phone. But we managed without these.

From the manager...

Thank you so much for the review, and glad you liked almost everything :-)
We are working right now, on adding the two features you mentioned. If all goes well, they should be operational within a fortnight.
We hope to see you again!

The campsite was fantastic. The owners were very friendly and helpful. The facilities had everything you needed and were very clean including a nice hot shower. The location was perfect, close enough to Wells that you can walk there in 20 minutes but not too close as to provide plenty of peace and quiet. Felt very relaxed the entire time.

Local attractions

Wells (five minutes' drive/a few minutes' cycle), the smallest city in England, packs in a good number of top tourist attractions for its size. The main event for most will probably be the cathedral, built in 1175, which towers over the surrounding buildings, but other sights include the moated Bishop's Palace and Vicars' Close, commonly held to be the oldest residential street in Europe.

Within a few miles of Wells, you can climb to the top of Glastonbury Tor (10 minutes) or explore the town's many independent shops, pick your way between the rocks and hike up Cheddar Gorge (20 minutes) or head underground to explore the caves and caverns at Wookey Hole (20 minutes), one of the many interesting geological features on this side of the Mendip Hills.

Venturing a little bit further afield opens up more possibilities – you could explore the stunning World Heritage Site that is Bath city centre (45 minutes), drive on a mini safari past lions, hippos and wolves at Longleat (40 minutes) or pack your bucket and spade and explore the Somerset coast at Burnham-on-Sea (40 minutes) or Brean (50 minutes).

Must see

  • Wells Cathedral (1.9 kilometers)
  • Ebbor Gorge National Nature Reserve (3.5 kilometers)
  • Wookey Hole Caves & Papermill (4.2 kilometers)

  • West Pennard Court Barn (6.9 kilometers)
