  • Small off-grid farm campsite two miles from Wells
  • A 10-minute drive from Glastonbury; Cheddar 20 minutes
  • Fresh eggs, fruit and veg available; campfires welcome
Off-grid adventure awaits in rural Somerset at The Lorax Patch, a friendly little site just two miles south of the cathedral city of Wells. There's a lot to like about this family-friendly farm, from the little stream that runs through it to the cute animals or the fresh eggs, veg and fruit that are regularly available to guests. The facilities here are on the simpler side, with composting loos and a single hot shower, but what The Lorax Patch lacks in amenities, it makes up for in freedom. Here, you can be sure you'll have the space to pitch up at a good distance from your nearest neighbour, and all spots come with their own firepit and picnic table. Any kids you bring along for the ride will be sure to experience that same freedom too, as there's a stream they can explore a short walk away. Adventures further afield are also easily sorted, as a footpath runs through the site, and a nearby cycle path connects the place up with Wells, which you can reach quickly and safely in just a few minutes by bike.

Local attractions

Wells (five minutes' drive/a few minutes' cycle), the smallest city in England, packs in a good number of top tourist attractions for its size. The main event for most will probably be the cathedral, built in 1175, which towers over the surrounding buildings, but other sights include the moated Bishop's Palace and Vicars' Close, commonly held to be the oldest residential street in Europe. Within a few miles of Wells, you can climb to the top of Glastonbury Tor (10 minutes) or explore the town's many independent shops, pick your way between the rocks and hike up Cheddar Gorge (20 minutes) or head underground to explore the caves and caverns at Wookey Hole (20 minutes), one of the many interesting geological features on this side of the Mendip Hills. Venturing a little bit further afield opens up more possibilities – you could explore the stunning World Heritage Site that is Bath city centre (45 minutes), drive on a mini safari past lions, hippos and wolves at Longleat (40 minutes) or pack your bucket and spade and explore the Somerset coast at Burnham-on-Sea (40 minutes) or Brean (50 minutes).

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: This was a lovely campsite - it has just a few pitches, very private, with long grass between them. The facilities were great and the owner was lovely to deal with. I really enjoyed my 1 night stay.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Lovely little site with pitches cut into the long grass and a table / fire-pit with each pitch. Toilet facilities were good and the shower worked well. Site owner was very friendly when we met in the morning

Disliked: I had difficulty finding the site using the address Pitch Up supplied; problem solved when I put Lorax Patch into Google maps

From the manager: Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review. I'll try and improve the way that Pitch Up directs people to our site. Google Maps is certainly the best option!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: We had a fabulous one night stay at The Lorax Patch. The site was beautiful, clean and the staff were friendly.

We particularly loved: the space between each pitch, the fact each pitch came with a table and fire pit, the outdoor shower and the rope swing over the stream!

We would love to return some time soon! The perfect escape from reality for 24 hours!

Disliked: Our only slight quibble was the lack of communication ahead of our stay. I recommend messaging one of the numbers provided ahead of your stay so that you’re a bit more well prepared than we were!
However, once we had been in touch, Gabe was quick to send over the info we needed and showed up on site to check we had everything we needed.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for coming, and thank you for the review. Comments noted, and we will do our best to get more info out to guests in advance.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Peaceful and natural setting, with a small number of camping pitches + semi-permanent tent domes. Nice clean toilets, great shower (but only 1). Friendly owner.

Disliked: Could hear the traffic at night, only occasionally though

From the manager: Thanks for such a lovely review, glad you enjoyed your stay. Please come again!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Lovely spaceous relaxed site. Big field, with 5 pitches and some other accommodation like yurts. So very peaceful. Clean facilities (hope they stay that clean). Great shower. Close enough to Wells without being on the city edge.

Disliked: Nothing. Everything was great for me. Note anyone with lots of gear will have a workout (it's better than having cars in the field), no lighting (but can see stars instead,... And sleep), most tents had fires (it is a campsite ...but asthma suffers be aware). So no dislikes.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Really appreciated, many thanks for coming, and thank you for the review. Good info for other guests, I had never really thought about the asthma issue. Please come again!

Yurt

Liked: We stayed in the furnished yurt which was beautiful.
The loos were clean and the shower hot.
The stream and rope swing were big hits with the kids
Seeing so many stars at night.

Disliked: I was scared my kids may affect the compost loos, but the instructions were clear so there were no problems.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks so much for taking the time to write a review, and I'm glad you had such a good time. Thank you also for the positive compost loo feedback. Great to hear!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Quite location with good space between pitches. Each pitch has its own picnic table and fire pit. Priced per person. Well maintained facilities. The only reason I might give it less than five stars is that in future, when the new trees have grown, it will be even better.

Disliked: It was a long trek from the car parking area with our camping gear. Bring a trolley if you gave one.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks so much for the review, and the useful feedback. We now have planning permission for a stone trackway from the parking area to the barn, so in future the walk from car to pitch will be much shorter. Come back and see the trees next year!
