General

  • Back to basics farm site near Wells
  • Pitch where you like
  • Water supply and toilets on site

Let your troubles ebb away at Ebborways Farm near Wells, in the scenic heart of Somerset. Perfect for those in pursuit of an authentic camping experience, simplicity is the key here: it’s just you, a field – and a campfire if you like – in sumptuous, serene surroundings. Facilities are limited to a water supply and composting loos, and you can pitch wherever you like, alone or in groups.

However, you’re not too far from a bit of civilisation: it’s a short walk to a handful of pubs - including a couple that do top-notch food - and a farm shop, in the local village of Priddy (and it is, too).

Fire packs (matches, firelighters, kindling and logs), as well as nets of logs, are available to buy on arrival.

Please note

Campfires are allowed on site. Fire packs (matches, firelighters, kindling and logs) cost £8 and nets of logs £5.

The use of generators is not allowed.

The lack of facilities. Exactly what we were looking for as a back to basics taster of camping for the little ones. Toilets and drinking water are all you need. Friendly welcome. Liked the ability to light fires, choose are location in the field etc.

    Disliked:

The firewood purchased on site was very wet. We were using our fire for cooking and heating water etc and the wood was quite difficult to work with. Would take our own next time or a different way to cook.

View over valley, other campers, although they were few and far. Liked that it is okay to have camp fire, although we didn't take advantage of the offer. Local pub had good beer, hot food was okay.

    Disliked:

Compost toilets were perfectly acceptable, but there was a lack of toilet paper until the evening of day one and there was no sawdust available in the ladies toilet to sprinkle over faeces before leaving.

Even thought it was a little cold to camp at the end of February it was still an amazing place to go. The view was beautiful and being able to camp where we wanted and we were able to spread out a little.
When we arrive the gentleman who opened the door was lovely, friendly and he made us feel welcome.
Was nice to know that the owners put trust in young people staying at the site, they didnt ask questions. Just simply said have a lovely time and told us what was in the area.
Definitely will be somewhere i would visit gain just when it is a little bit warmer

    Disliked:

Toilets were compost which i am not a fan of but it was nicer than we expected.

Directions

From the North/ Midlands:
Take the M5 then M4 to London and take first junction M32 Bristol.
At the end of the M32 follow the road around to the left.
Follow signs for A37 Wells (mostly written in the road). Basically the middle lane, past Temple Meads Station.
Continue to follow the signs for Wells through Pensford, Clutton, Temple Cloud, Farrington Gurney and Chewton Mendip.
At Green Ore (traffic lights with pub on right), continue straight on.
Approx ¼ mile turn right, signed for Priddy. (If you find yourself going downhill, you have gone too far)
Continue for three miles into the village, take the first left past The Queen Victoria pub.
We are 400 yards up on the right. There are 2 very large beech trees just before our drive.

Please call at the house on arrival.

Local attractions

Given the proximity of Bath and Wells, there’s an obvious temptation to regale your companions with choice one-liners from Blackadder; but pause for breath and you’ll discover that both have more celebrated charms than the baby-eating bishop.

Bath probably needs less of an introduction: think Roman baths, Georgian grandeur, Jane Austen, rugby and culture aplenty; while Wells, which holds the accolade of England’s smallest city, is a medieval gem with a thirteenth century cathedral, a moated bishop’s palace, and a lively twice-weekly market.

Also highly recommended is a trip to the spectacular Cheddar Gorge, which offers something for all ages: breathtaking views; brilliant caving and rock climbing; walks up Jacob’s Ladder; open-top bus tours; a clutch of family attractions; eerily beautiful stalactite caverns; and, of course, more cheese than you can shake a stick at.

Keen walkers will be delighted by the proximity of the Mendips (Ebborways Farm is close to the West Mendip Way, which runs to the Ebbor Gorge nature reserve); or, for those who prefer life on four wheels, there are loads of fascinating places an easy drive away: atmospheric Glastonbury, the colossal caves and family attractions at Wookey Hole, the vibrant maritime city of Bristol, the fantastic safari and adventure park at Longleat, and the sandy beaches of Weston-super-Mare.

If you’re visiting in August, you may be lucky enough to coincide with Priddy’s annual sheep fair; this historic event, with animal demonstrations, a funfair and more, attracts a whopping 10,000 visitors each year.

Finally, should you feel the need to indulge in our national pastime, there are more than 90 outlet shops at the Clarks Village centre, in the nearby village of Street.

Must see

  • Wookey Hole Caves & Papermill (1.7 miles)
  • Ebbor Gorge National Nature Reserve (2.3 miles)
  • Wells Cathedral (3.2 miles)

National Trust

  • King John's Hunting Lodge (6.5 miles)
  • West Pennard Court Barn (8.5 miles)
