General

  • Back to basics farm site near Wells
  • Pitch where you like
  • Water supply and toilets on site

Let your troubles ebb away at Ebborways Farm near Wells, in the scenic heart of Somerset. Perfect for those in pursuit of an authentic camping experience, simplicity is the key here: it’s just you, a field – and a campfire if you like – in sumptuous, serene surroundings. Facilities are limited to a water supply and composting loos, and you can pitch wherever you like, alone or in groups.

However, you’re not too far from a bit of civilisation: it’s a short walk to a handful of pubs - including a couple that do top-notch food - and a farm shop, in the local village of Priddy (and it is, too).

Fire packs (matches, firelighters, kindling and logs), as well as nets of logs, are available to buy on arrival.

Please note

Campfires are allowed on site. Fire packs (matches, firelighters, kindling and logs) cost £8 and nets of logs £5.

The use of generators is not allowed.

The site was basic but perfect for our needs. It was quiet and peaceful and had the basic amenities required. The spot we camped in was well sheltered and had a good fire pit. The host was lovely and very welcoming to. A short walk to the Queen Vic pub (would recommend) and into Priddy which was lovely.

Recommend to anyone willing to go back to basics and enjoy a peaceful life with Wells, Glastonbury and Cheddar all on the doorstep.

The site was very clean and the staff couldn't have been more smiley, even on such a miserable day weather wise. The facilities were cleaned regularly and were fit for purpose. Only stayed 1 night but will certainly be looking to come back in the near future.

We live 20 minutes from this site and have popped up twice on a sunny weekend. The views are lovely, you're within walking distance of the pub and there are plenty of walks from the site. Being allowed fires is also a bonus. The vibe of the site is relaxed and friendly. You pitch where you want and there are few site rules. We will certainly be back.

Ps. The toilets are fine unless you're very much an indoors sort.

    Disliked:

As with any site with few rules, you are a little at the mercy of your neighbours. On one night (bank holiday Sunday) we were treated to amplified trance music until 2am and one group had a violent fist fight complete with screaming onlookers around 2.30am. Bank holiday over, they cleared off and it was back to a rural idyll.

Overall we enjoyed our stay at Ebborways Farm. I had a very warm and jolly welcome at the house when first arriving. Although busy our pitch was not cramped. You could buy wood from a lovely man at the top of the field at £5 a bag and £3 for kindling. I wish I could give more stars but there was a few disadvantages!

    Disliked:

It was a bank holiday weekend and of course we expected the site to be busy, full of life and noise. As a young couple we do not mind music, kids playing and happily sat by our tent with some music on enjoying the weather. We had our music low and checked with neighbours that it wasn't too loud, who replied with I can't hear it at all. However other campers were not as respectful. A large family was very loud shouting with foul language with kids and a dog they couldn't seem to keep under control, blasted music till around 12pm and after turning it off continued to talk extremely loudly until 4am.
As it was the bank holiday, the site, who usually only have compost toilets, put on a few portaloos. On the first night these were emaculate but but the second morning, the loos were more than overflowing. Then this caused a complete over use of the compost toilet.
Being close to a set of tress meant we repeatedly had people coming and snapping branches from the trees, for their fires, instead of paying for them.
Late one evening a lot of campers arrived driving their vans erratically and at high speed, weaving through pitches instead of using the outside lane.
I would come again but maybe during a quieter period, to avoid these issues. The rude campers are of no fault of the owners, the toilet issue could be addressed for busy times and I do believe the mad drivers were spoken too.
It is a lovely spot and I would recommend just maybe not during the most busiest weekend!

From the manager...

Thank you very much for your review.
As you know we give out information on arrival, with some please do's and don'ts, we ask that people ARE CONSIDERATE TO OTHER CAMPERS, leave sufficient space between tents and DO NOT PLAY LOUD MUSIC/RADIOS. Also not to destroy our trees and hedges, or take stone from the walls to build fire pits.
We try to minimize the rules to make it a relaxed stay for everyone, unfortunately some people are just very disrespectful and rude.
It also states clearly on the gate that 5 mph is quite fast enough to drive through the site and the track is there for a reason.
Several groups were asked to keep the noise down, and turn radios off, and the van drivers were spoken too.
On Friday when the sun came out I think everybody in the world decided to, make a late booking, hence the emergency call for the extra toilets. With hindsight (always a wonderful thing) I should have tried to get more, but it was very short notice.
Hope to see you again.

From the North/ Midlands:
Take the M5 then M4 to London and take first junction M32 Bristol.
At the end of the M32 follow the road around to the left.
Follow signs for A37 Wells (mostly written in the road). Basically the middle lane, past Temple Meads Station.
Continue to follow the signs for Wells through Pensford, Clutton, Temple Cloud, Farrington Gurney and Chewton Mendip.
At Green Ore (traffic lights with pub on right), continue straight on.
Approx ¼ mile turn right, signed for Priddy. (If you find yourself going downhill, you have gone too far)
Continue for three miles into the village, take the first left past The Queen Victoria pub.
We are 400 yards up on the right. There are 2 very large beech trees just before our drive.

Please call at the house on arrival.

Local attractions

Given the proximity of Bath and Wells, there’s an obvious temptation to regale your companions with choice one-liners from Blackadder; but pause for breath and you’ll discover that both have more celebrated charms than the baby-eating bishop.

Bath probably needs less of an introduction: think Roman baths, Georgian grandeur, Jane Austen, rugby and culture aplenty; while Wells, which holds the accolade of England’s smallest city, is a medieval gem with a thirteenth century cathedral, a moated bishop’s palace, and a lively twice-weekly market.

Also highly recommended is a trip to the spectacular Cheddar Gorge, which offers something for all ages: breathtaking views; brilliant caving and rock climbing; walks up Jacob’s Ladder; open-top bus tours; a clutch of family attractions; eerily beautiful stalactite caverns; and, of course, more cheese than you can shake a stick at.

Keen walkers will be delighted by the proximity of the Mendips (Ebborways Farm is close to the West Mendip Way, which runs to the Ebbor Gorge nature reserve); or, for those who prefer life on four wheels, there are loads of fascinating places an easy drive away: atmospheric Glastonbury, the colossal caves and family attractions at Wookey Hole, the vibrant maritime city of Bristol, the fantastic safari and adventure park at Longleat, and the sandy beaches of Weston-super-Mare.

If you’re visiting in August, you may be lucky enough to coincide with Priddy’s annual sheep fair; this historic event, with animal demonstrations, a funfair and more, attracts a whopping 10,000 visitors each year.

Finally, should you feel the need to indulge in our national pastime, there are more than 90 outlet shops at the Clarks Village centre, in the nearby village of Street.
