  • In a rural peaceful area with easy access to shops and local pubs
  • Orchard walks with stunning views of Somerset
  • In a 12-acre orchard; restaurant 200 yards away and pub within a mile
Somerset camping… even the phrase sounds peaceful. Add in an orchard and – well, all is sorted for peaceful Somerset stays. (And spectacular views too, of course.) West Down Orchard Touring and Camping Park is a family-run site set deep in green Somerset countryside, in a 12-acre orchard with those spectacular views. This is the place to settle for rest, relaxation and splendid walks throughout the nearby farmland and countryside lanes; dogs are welcome on site too. Pitches here drain well even in heavy rain, to suit stays in all weathers, and are generously sized with plenty of room around. The park has a large and up-to-date facilities block with separate ladies' and gents' areas and free hot showers, and a launderette with washing machine and tumble dryer. The small on-site shop stocks daily essentials, a restaurant is just down the road and the local pub is a mile away.

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked Very friendly staff and relaxed feeling on the site. Good location within walking distance of a very good pub (you will probably need to book for food). We only stayed for one night, so didn't use the showers but the toilet block was fine and had spare razors, toothbrushes etc which was a nice touch. Plenty of dog walking straight from the site.

Disliked Not all the pitches are level, so if you're in a van make sure you have ramps. Electricity is chargeable, but the site is great value so this isn't necessarily a problem.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked The staff are super friendly and helped us out with an electric pitch last minute even though we didn’t have any booked. We love visiting PIPs for food next door and the Royal Oak pub. The orchards to walk the dogs are great and the prices for pitches are great value!

Disliked Nothing!

Electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Good facilities. Shower block was always clean and tidy, and although we didn't use it, it had a supply of essentials you may have forgotten. There was always a shower free even at peak times.

There is loads of space for pitches, which makes a change as often you get crammed in.

The campsite was really quiet. Very little noise from other campers or road noise etc.

Disliked The site is predominantly long term residential / storage pitches, which definitely changes the vibe of the site...you don't get the same feel as you do when there are lots of other holiday campers. Instead there are lots of RVs and caravans with semi-permenant sheds/garden features etc, and a stream of people leaving early for work (presumably) on week day mornings. This is the main reason for lowering the score, it's a nice site, but I wouldn't return on this basis.

Local attractions

Although it's in a peaceful rural spot, West Down Orchard Touring and Camping Park has easy access to local shops and pubs, and to a good range of attractions in Somerset and down over the border into Dorset. Ilminster, recommended by the West Down owners as one of the finest small market towns in south Somerset, is five miles away. Historic types have the Elizabethan mansion and surrounding gardens of the National Trust-managed Montacute House to wander five miles from base, and the Fleet Air Arm Museum nine miles away, telling the tale of British naval aviation. If engines get you humming, over 400 cars and motorcycles and a collection of other automobilia are at the Haynes International Motor Museum 16 miles away. Glastonbury and its Tor are 18 miles from the site; if you fancy beach, coast and fossil foraging, Lyme Regis is about 20 minutes' drive away.
