  • In a rural peaceful area with easy access to shops and local pubs
  • Orchard walks with stunning views of Somerset
  • In a 12-acre orchard; restaurant 200 yards away and pub within a mile
Somerset camping… even the phrase sounds peaceful. Add in an orchard and – well, all is sorted for peaceful Somerset stays. (And spectacular views too, of course.) West Down Orchard Touring and Camping Park is a family-run site set deep in green Somerset countryside, in a 12-acre orchard with those spectacular views. This is the place to settle for rest, relaxation and splendid walks throughout the nearby farmland and countryside lanes; dogs are welcome on site too. Pitches here drain well even in heavy rain, to suit stays in all weathers, and are generously sized with plenty of room around. The park has a large and up-to-date facilities block with separate ladies' and gents' areas and free hot showers, and a launderette with washing machine and tumble dryer. The small on-site shop stocks daily essentials, a restaurant is just down the road and the local pub is a mile away.

What customers say

Friendly, peaceful, and well-kept campground with great value. Guests love the roomy sites, clean washrooms, and free toiletries. Perfect for dog walks in orchards, near pubs and shops. Some noted many long-term campers and older shower stalls, but most had a great stay and want to come back.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Large spacious field next to a lovely orchard walk and cafes nearby. Relaxed and quiet during our stay. Site is remote but does have a village nearby.

Disliked Nothing to dislike. We didnt ask or look for a drive over grey waste so not sure if they have one.

Power optional grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked In general the camp is clean and tidy and staff friendly and helpful. On the whole our experience was a good one, but this camp does cater for all, holiday campers as well as long term site users, some of which may be residential?

Disliked Showers could be improved.
Spray heads on some were blocked and needed replacing.
Cubicles were small so not easy to keep clothing dry when getting dressed with soaking wet floor, made worse by shower user next door’s water flowing into mine.

Power optional cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Staff were nice

Disliked Lots of long term people who clearly live on site, women showers were cold , it's ok and cheap electric but has zero facilities on site to eat, (other than expensive shops where you pay £1.20 for a can) , not so pitches have water

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Lucky to get a last minute bank holiday weekend stay here - non lecy campervan pitch in the lower field so nice and peaceful next to the orchard all for £16 per night. Slept like a log for 10 ten hours both nights! A friendly welcome on arrival, 10 minute walk to the Royal Oak pub at Over Stratton where we had a lovely meal out. BBQs allowed, no marked pitches, clean shower block. Mainly season pitch holders but all friendly and a nice level of respect about. Our perfect kind of site.

Local attractions

Although it's in a peaceful rural spot, West Down Orchard Touring and Camping Park has easy access to local shops and pubs, and to a good range of attractions in Somerset and down over the border into Dorset. Ilminster, recommended by the West Down owners as one of the finest small market towns in south Somerset, is five miles away. Historic types have the Elizabethan mansion and surrounding gardens of the National Trust-managed Montacute House to wander five miles from base, and the Fleet Air Arm Museum nine miles away, telling the tale of British naval aviation. If engines get you humming, over 400 cars and motorcycles and a collection of other automobilia are at the Haynes International Motor Museum 16 miles away. Glastonbury and its Tor are 18 miles from the site; if you fancy beach, coast and fossil foraging, Lyme Regis is about 20 minutes' drive away.
