  • Pop-up site in a field behind a pub, 10 minutes’ drive from Frome
  • Longleat animal park 20 minutes’ drive; Bath city centre half an hour
  • Dog friendly; breakfasts, lunches and dinners available at the pub
Fancy a Somerset break with easy, convenient access to a traditional pub serving real ales and home-cooked meals? Then consider Buckland Field Camping. This small and friendly pop-up site occupies a lush paddock to the rear of The Bell Inn, in the village of Buckland Dinham, 10 minutes’ drive from Frome along the A362. This is a simple but comfortable spot, with all the basic amenities: toilets, warm showers and a washing-up area, for example. There’s also plenty of free parking in the pub car park, not to mention spectacular country views from the expansive (and flat) field. The other obvious perk of staying here is the on-site pub, which serves home-cooked breakfasts, light lunches and filling evening meals, as well as organising events like quiz nights and live music. If you’d rather self-cater, portable gas stoves are permitted if guests exercise caution. Well-behaved dogs are welcome throughout the season. Plenty of bike trails and footpaths (some of them starting at the site gates) heading into the Somerset countryside make it easy to leave the car behind. If you want to give your legs a break, the D2 bus stops just outside the pub and travels to destinations like Frome and Bath (half an hour’s drive). Other local spots worth exploring include Longleat animal park (20 minutes) and Cheddar Gorge (40 minutes), in the Mendip Hills National Landscape.

What customers say

This is a basic, quiet campsite situated behind The Bell Inn pub. Visitors praise the friendly staff, good pub food and drink, and reasonable prices. The field offers plenty of space and lovely views. Facilities include a shower (£2 charge) and a washing-up station. While generally clean, some noted issues with limited toilet provision and occasional lack of hot water for washing up. Noise from farm animals and other campers has been reported, as has a challenging access for larger motorhomes.

Liked Nice basic campsite adjoined to a pub. Good location, 20 minutes walk to the Collier Way. Great pub staff and food at reasonable prices.
Recommended, we will definitely be returning.

Disliked I believe this site is reasonably new and in its infancy, at the moment there's only one unisex toilet cubicle available outside of pub hours, but hopefully this will change in the near future.

Bell tent

Liked Great views. Wonderful friendly staff. Nice bell tent. Pub handy for first night drinks/meal.

Disliked Toilet a long way to walk in the night or when desperate. Shower was too hot for daughter to use. Other campers noisy and large group parked right next to our bell tent when loads of space.

Liked Loved this place and will definitely be back. Very friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Not massive but there were only 7 groups when I went so plenty of space. The staff at the pub are amazing, and it has a lovely atmosphere. The food is very reasonably priced and is good. It is basically a field behind a pub, but that is the charm and it is in an absolutely beautiful location. There is one shower in a shed on the field itself (costs £2 and only takes 2x£1 coins for 6min of hot water) and next to that shed there is a single washing up sink with cold water only. There is a single toilet for the campsite in a building near the pub open 24hrs which is 100 feet away from the field and you can use the pub toilets when it is open.

Disliked Very hard to dislike but I guess it may not be for you if want a sterile faceless and zero atmosphere site. If you want to feel like you are in a beautiful location away from it all with very nice staff then it’s perfect.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked A large field so there was plenty so there was plenty of space between pitches. There is a shower and washing up facilities on the field, the toilet is a little bit further away. The owners are friendly and accommodating. The pub food was good too. Will probably stay again in the future.

Disliked Nothing.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked The Location, pub, local people and owners were fantastic. They made me and my wife feel very welcome indeed.
While the campsite is very basic, you know that before you book, and thats just what we wanted. Its surrounded by farmland as such its very quiet. For the price, you can't beat it. We will be back!

Disliked Getting in and out of the campsite could be tricky. One way is a slope the other is a little tight width wise. A very small issue on an other wise lovely place. We got in and out with our 22ft caravan ok.

Bell tent

Liked Lovely chilled campsite only stayed one night in a bell tent wish i had more time. bell tent was clean, washing up facilities, coin operated shower , toilet was clean and you can use the pub toilets when it's open

Disliked Campbed in bell tent a bit awkward as a double but for a basic bell tent you can't expect miracles. Next time I bring a extra duvet to make it more comfortable

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked Big empty field. Only stayed a night so didn’t explore

Disliked No washing up facilities that we found but maybe we didn’t look hard enough. I don’t think the single loo would cope if there was a full field. £22 per night for pitch and 2 dogs a bit steep for the facilities on offer

Local attractions

You might be into grand country homes, while the kids clamour to visit an animal park. Good news: Longleat (20 minutes’ drive) ought to make everybody happy, since the estate includes an elegant 16th-century Elizabethan mansion with period furnishings and a safari park with big cats, hippos and koalas among its many residents. Keen hikers head to the Mendip Hills National Landscape (half an hour) to scramble up dramatic limestone ridges and outcrops – or to stroll through expansive plateaus dotted with the remains of ancient sites. Also here are Cheddar Gorge and Caves (40 minutes), with spectacular rock formations. Stretching along the River Avon, Bath (30 minutes) is a top spot for a little pampering. Spend half a day at the rooftop pool of the Thermae Bath Spa sauna complex, soaking your aching limbs as well as soaking up splendid views of the city, before checking out the Roman Baths or the Victoria Art Gallery.
