  • Pop-up site in a field behind a pub, 10 minutes’ drive from Frome
  • Longleat animal park 20 minutes’ drive; Bath city centre half an hour
  • Dog friendly; breakfasts, lunches and dinners available at the pub
Fancy a Somerset break with easy, convenient access to a traditional pub serving real ales and home-cooked meals? Then consider Buckland Field Camping. This small and friendly pop-up site occupies a lush paddock to the rear of The Bell Inn, in the village of Buckland Dinham, 10 minutes’ drive from Frome along the A362. This is a simple but comfortable spot, with all the basic amenities: toilets, warm showers and a washing-up area, for example. There’s also plenty of free parking in the pub car park, not to mention spectacular country views from the expansive (and flat) field. The other obvious perk of staying here is the on-site pub, which serves home-cooked breakfasts, light lunches and filling evening meals, as well as organising events like quiz nights and live music. If you’d rather self-cater, portable gas stoves are permitted if guests exercise caution. Well-behaved dogs are welcome throughout the season. Plenty of bike trails and footpaths (some of them starting at the site gates) heading into the Somerset countryside make it easy to leave the car behind. If you want to give your legs a break, the D2 bus stops just outside the pub and travels to destinations like Frome and Bath (half an hour’s drive). Other local spots worth exploring include Longleat animal park (20 minutes) and Cheddar Gorge (40 minutes), in the Mendip Hills National Landscape.

What customers say

This is a relaxed, basic campsite located behind a welcoming country pub, praised for its peaceful rural location, friendly staff and good value. Pitching is flexible across a spacious field. Facilities include a coin-operated shower and a wash-up sink. While some found the single toilet inconvenient, particularly at night, the pub offers additional facilities and excellent food. The site is noted as ideal for short stays and exploring the local area.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked Nothing

Disliked There was not a grass pitch available at all. Just a car park bay in front of the pub.
NOT AT ALL IMPRESSED... I did not stay

From the manager: Hi Christine. Really sorry to hear of your experience here. However we believe you may have been at the wrong Bell Inn, there are several within our area. Our pub has no parking bay out front, but a large car park at the rear leading to our Large Camping Field. We hope to welcome you another time :)

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Lovely location, great little pub with fantastic food, peaceful and a real relaxing chilled experience

Disliked Nothing really to dislike other than the toilets are mixed sex rather than having separate men’s and women’s but that’s a personal struggle.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked This is a perfect spot for a quick stop over, weekend or half way overnight stop on a longer trip. The field is great. The location peaceful and rural. The campsite is a pop up and in turn has limited toilet facilities but ok if not too crowded. They are working on developing the facilities bit by bit but there is a sink for washing up, a simple shower and of course the pub which serves great food and drink in a relaxed atmosphere, has additional facilities which are available to campers all day. Staff very helpful and make the place homely

Disliked My biggest recommendation is that while though they don't serve breakfasts in the pub on sunday as I suspect the focus is sunday roasts, I think they are missing a trick. They could could have a breakfast batch preorder chalk board etc., inside where campers pay up front for a sausage or bacon. bap and they could be semi prepared in advance to be picked up on morning. I think there would be positive demand for that.

Liked Lovely and peaceful, good walks near by. Very helpful and friendly staff, good food at the pub.

Disliked It would of been good to have water tap more obvious.
As a single traveller it would be nice to be charged per person not pitch

Local attractions

You might be into grand country homes, while the kids clamour to visit an animal park. Good news: Longleat (20 minutes’ drive) ought to make everybody happy, since the estate includes an elegant 16th-century Elizabethan mansion with period furnishings and a safari park with big cats, hippos and koalas among its many residents. Keen hikers head to the Mendip Hills National Landscape (half an hour) to scramble up dramatic limestone ridges and outcrops – or to stroll through expansive plateaus dotted with the remains of ancient sites. Also here are Cheddar Gorge and Caves (40 minutes), with spectacular rock formations. Stretching along the River Avon, Bath (30 minutes) is a top spot for a little pampering. Spend half a day at the rooftop pool of the Thermae Bath Spa sauna complex, soaking your aching limbs as well as soaking up splendid views of the city, before checking out the Roman Baths or the Victoria Art Gallery.
