Wimbleball Holidays: Our pitch with a view of the lake

General

  • Peaceful secluded family farm within Exmoor National Park
  • 50 metres from the shore of Wimbleball Lake
  • Direct access to the lake and the cycle path around it

Hunting for a peaceful and secluded Somerset spot with a backdrop fit for a postcard? Stay at Wimbleball Holidays, 20 minutes' drive from Dulverton, and you can wake up to sublime views of Wimbleball Lake, a mere 50 metres away.

The location is spot on if you fancy trying your hand at a range of watersports, including kayaking, canoeing, rowing, sailing and windsurfing. Walking, cycling, birdwatching and fishing are also popular picks if you’d rather appreciate the lake views while sticking to dry land. More? A 10-minute stroll along the shore of the lake will take you to the impressive Wimbleball Dam.

This peaceful park is within Exmoor National Park, so think moorland, woodland and wildlife… and plenty of ways to explore it all. The area's also famed for its stargazing (it was Europe's first Dark Sky Reserve, no less), so come prepped to stay up late and turn sights skywards on a clear night.

The site is on a working family farm and at certain times of year visitors are welcome to get involved with the running of it, with shearing to be done and lambs to be fed (go on – you know you want to have a go…). There are a couple of village pubs around two miles from the site but if you can’t tear yourself away from the views, barbecues and campfires are permitted on site.

As for facilities, a washing-up area, toilets and showers are available on site.

Beautiful small site, easy access to the lake and activities. Great facilities at site, always clean. Host was brilliant, so accommodating, helpful and friendly. Kids are desperate to go back again this summer.
Very very little wifi which was nice, but we were unprepared for.

Brian and Caroline! Peace and quiet, remoteness, clean showers, toilets and wash up area. Relatively flat pitches. Access to lakeside walk. Kids swing. Sheltered. Well kept. There is a good local shop a 5 min drive away, and The George pub is excellent, both in Brompton Regis.

    Disliked:

A couple of pitches are slightly sloping. Network reception is non-existent; which is fine for the peace, but frustrating if you want to (i.e.) check the weather, or make a booking (restaurant, day out) etc. You couldn't park your car adjacent to your tent, but the car park is very close, and this keeps the site less cluttered (although, you can to un/load)

An excellent site: clean facilities, abundant hot water, flat pitches, quiet, lots of space, great access to the lake, warm and welcoming owners.

    Disliked:

Nothing to dislike here. Some people might point out that there is zero mobile phone signal and no chance of using either wifi or data but this is probably an advantage. Why would you want to be connected in such a peaceful setting?

Very helpful and welcoming. The kids fed lambs and watched sheep shearing and loved it all. Facilities very good. Use of fridge and freezer and great washing up area. Nice hot showers. Very quiet spot, no road noise. Right next to the lake and very near the watersports centre. Lots of help and advice on things to do and where to go to get my tyre fixed!

    Disliked:

Lack of WiFi / phone signal was a bit of a pain. Harder to plan outings - advise you take an OS map or similar. It was nice that the kids couldn't use their phones though...

Directions

There is a similarly named site next door; look for a sign saying ‘Wimbleball Holidays/South Greenslade Farm’. The postcode (TA22 9NU) takes you to a house 500 metres from the farm. When the satnav tells you that 'you have reached your destination', keep on going to the end of the road (bear left at the fork) and it’s the first house on the right with an arch over the gate.

Local attractions

There's direct access to Wimbleball Lake and its surrounding cycle path from the site, so you don’t have to go far for things to do… just up and go. The lake’s activity centre is less than a mile away; here you can get to grips with a host of activities on water and land, and there’s a high ropes course to tackle too.

Swap the lake for the seafront if you’d rather, as Somerset’s beaches – including Minehead – are around half an hour's drive away. If you’re heading to Minehead and feel like seeking out a bit of history, Dunster village is about five minutes from there, for a wander around Dunster Castle, Conygar Tower and a working watermill.

For family-friendly adventures, it’s all aboard the West Somerset Railway for a ride on a steam train (10 minutes away by car) or off to meet the ponies at Exmoor Pony Centre (half an hour).

40 minutes in the car will take you to the county town of Taunton for an array of high street and independent shops to keep shopaholics busy – historic Bath Place is a good spot to start with if you're partial to picking up bits in independent shops.
