Burton Springs: View from Stargazer Belle Tent across Alder Pool (course fishing lake)

General

  • Peaceful site at the foot of the Quantock Hills
  • Three fishing lakes on site
  • A base for Cheddar, Glastonbury and the Exmoor and Somerset coast

Solo sorts, families, couples and most of all anglers… come and get sorted at serene and scenic Burton Springs, for a super stay in a Somerset wildlife haven.

This peaceful place is at the foot of the Quantock Hills and a nifty base for getting out around the Quantocks, the west Somerset and Exmoor coastline, and smashing Somerset settings like Cheddar Gorge and Glastonbury Abbey, both under 20 miles away.

And if your group are fisherfolk? Cast off on site in the three handsome and well-stocked lakes: there's one each of coarse fishing, carp fishing and cat fishing to keep all angling enthusiasts hooked. Please note that fishing is subject to additional charges and must be booked in advance. (Non-fisherfolk have plenty of wildlife to see, walks to wander and quiet spots in which to hide with a book or three.)

Burton Springs is well kept all round by its friendly family team, who've added a spankingly clean shower and washroom as well as a washing-up area for guests' use. There's also a games room for all ages, with table football and a dartboard, a selection of board games, DVDs and reading material, and a small play area in the pitching field with a pirate ship, climbing walls, slides and a basket swing.

Food and drinks are available to buy in the site shop.

Please note

Facilities/activities including fishing are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Reception is unmanned after 5 p.m.. Please inform the site while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Incredible toilet / shower facilities for a campsite! Lovely Belle Tent, equipped with loads of essentials, great play area for kids and lovely quiet scenic location. Some really thoughtful touches (like a birthday card!!) And the fairylights outside the tent were so pretty. The staff and owners were all wonderful and helpful.

    Disliked:

The honesty shop is brilliant, though I felt it could have had a few more basic food and drink essentials.

Lovely site. Cleanest shower cubicles I have seen and we get away at least twice per month so seen a lot of places. It felt very calm and relaxed by day, which is just what I needed with a child with ASD. Loved the shop and the walk around the fishing lakes were lovely.

    Disliked:

Please consider adding a quiet time. There was another family who were joined by friends and at night they were very loud. The first night, they were up until midnight, drinking, talking and shouting, kids shouting across the field, including animal noises. They kept us awake but understood it was their break too so put up with it. The following night, I could see it was starting again and just wanted a night to relax and enjoy the quiet site for what it is however they were talking so so loud. I called the owners and made them aware but was made to feel they were not that loud and the owner actually told them this. I appreciate from the house they could not be heard but when they are directly next to you and the man talked so so loud and did not stop talking, it is such a pain when you can’t even have a conversation with your own family because all you can hear is his voice, constantly. Once the owners did visit, they noise went right down, they were still talking in their tent but it was a lower pitch and was much more appropriate. This allowed us to sleep. I appreciate this may seem silly but it is common courtesy when camping that once you get to a certain time at night, you respect your neighbours and lower the tone.

Local attractions

Burton Springs' closest chunk of coast is at Burnham-On-Sea about seven and a half miles away. Seaside resort Weston-super-Mare is a few miles further along the coast from Burnham; for the Exmoor coastline, stretches of shoreline and sand like Kilve, Dunster, Minehead and Porlock are a short drive in the other direction.

The South West Coast Path, Britain's longest long-distance path, starts from Minehead on its epic 630 miles via the coasts of Devon and Cornwall to finish up at Poole Harbour in Dorset.

If this is a tad too much, other hikes around the region include the Quantock Hills, England's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; Brean Down, a Site of Special Scientific Interest managed by the National Trust, and the Mendip Hills, also an AONB and home to splendidly spectacular Cheddar Gorge.

The Burton team also reckons guests should take a look at the small wildlife and adventure park Tropiquaria, the National Trust's Dunster Castle and Fyne Court, the Bakelite Museum at Wilton, the RSPB reserve at Greylake, and the rides and attractions of Brean Leisure Park.

Paintballing is available at Cannington Park, nearby at Bridgwater.
