  • Peaceful site at the foot of the Quantock Hills
  • Three fishing lakes on site
  • A base for Cheddar, Glastonbury and the Exmoor and Somerset coast
Solo sorts, families, couples and most of all anglers… come and get sorted at serene and scenic Burton Springs, for a super stay in a Somerset wildlife haven. This peaceful place is at the foot of the Quantock Hills and a nifty base for getting out around the Quantocks, the west Somerset and Exmoor coastline, and smashing Somerset settings like Cheddar Gorge and Glastonbury Abbey, both under 20 miles away. And if your group are fisherfolk? Cast off on site in the three handsome and well-stocked lakes: there's one each of coarse fishing, carp fishing and cat fishing to keep all angling enthusiasts hooked. Please note that fishing is subject to additional charges and must be booked in advance. (Non-fisherfolk have plenty of wildlife to see, walks to wander and quiet spots in which to hide with a book or three.) Burton Springs is well kept all round by its friendly family team, who've added a spankingly clean shower and washroom as well as a washing-up area for guests' use. There's also a games room for all ages, with table football and a dartboard, a selection of board games, DVDs and reading material, and a small play area in the pitching field with a pirate ship, climbing walls, slides and a basket swing. Food and drinks are available to buy in the site shop.

What customers say

This well-kept, clean, friendly campsite has spacious sites, great private washrooms, and a handy honesty shop. Guests love the beautiful lakes, peaceful vibe, and doggy play area. The games room and amenities are a hit. A bit of a walk to some facilities and occasional noise from Hinkley Point. Highly recommended for a relaxing break.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked The fishing pond was pretty enough and the water in the showers was hot.

Disliked We were disappointed with our stay, particularly with the condition and cleanliness of the toilet and shower facilities.

The main camping pitches are essentially situated in what feels like a car park. This wasn’t necessarily a major issue for us, but it isn’t particularly attractive or relaxing as a camping environment.

The biggest concern, and something I would strongly recommend the owners address, was the extremely strong smell of sewage around the toilet facilities and also at the washing-up area. This wasn’t just an occasional unpleasant smell – it was genuinely one of the foulest smells we have experienced and made using these areas very unpleasant.

The toilet and shower facilities also appeared to be in poor condition and did not feel particularly clean. The toilets had reusable fabric hand towels, similar to towels you would have at home, which doesn’t seem particularly hygienic for facilities being used by a large number of people. On the first toilet I used, the white hand towel was visibly brown and heavily soiled in the middle.

The showers were mouldy and generally quite grotty, and there were no sanitary bins available for used sanitary products or nappies, which we found particularly disappointing. The overall condition of the cubicles gave the impression that they weren’t being cleaned as regularly or as thoroughly as they should be.

What made this particularly frustrating was seeing signs throughout the facilities reminding guests to wash their hands and prevent the spread of germs, while the facilities themselves didn’t feel hygienic.

We also noticed dogs being allowed off the lead with no staff presence around, which was another concern.

There are some things that could be improved relatively easily, but the cleanliness and sewage smell in particular really need to be addressed. We appreciate that camping facilities aren’t expected to be luxurious, but they should at least be clean, hygienic and well maintained. Unfortunately, based on our experience, we wouldn’t choose to stay here again.

From the manager: Thank you for your review. We are sorry that you were disappointed with your one-night stay, although we would like to provide some context to a few of the points raised.

Your visit was during an ongoing heatwave, following four periods of extreme heat and virtually no rain since June. This is why our fields were extremely dry with very little grass, and also why we had a strict **no-fire policy** in place. We appreciate this was disappointing, but the safety of our guests, site and surrounding countryside has to come first.

We were particularly surprised by your comments regarding cleanliness. Our toilets and showers are **cleaned four times a day** and are regularly complimented by guests, even while we are running at full capacity with up to 160 people during the school holidays. There are also **sanitary bins and bags in every toilet**.

We are an **off-grid site** with our own sewage treatment plant rather than mains drainage. Unfortunately, when guests flush nappies and other unsuitable items, the pumps can become blocked and require immediate attention, which can occasionally cause an unpleasant smell until the problem is resolved.

We use reusable hand towels because electric hand dryers would create too much noise around our peaceful fishing lakes. We have also investigated paper towel systems, but providing these across eight individual facilities would cost approximately £8,000 per year. That said, a heavily soiled towel is not the standard we expect and would have been replaced immediately had we been made aware.

Finally, the dogs mentioned were our own and were with us while we sat with friends celebrating a birthday. They remained with us throughout.

We are a relaxed, friendly and personal site, and we understand that this style of camping will not suit everyone. We are always happy to receive constructive feedback and make improvements where needed, but we also feel it is important to provide context for future guests.

We wish you all the best with your future camping trips.

Great campsite with modern facilities, onsite shop and common room.

Power optional grass tent campsite

Liked Great campsite with modern facilities, onsite shop and common room with fridge, kettle and microwave. The campsite is relatively close to the coast path, which is convenient for hikers. Didn’t fish myself, but it seemed a nice fishing site, too.

Disliked It was a bit bright on the campsite at night due to construction at the closeby power plant. Of course, that’s out of the campsite‘s control and not their fault.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Overall, we enjoyed our stay; it was our first camping trip, and it was a good one. We were very pleased to find toilets and showers on-site. There is a shop in case you forgot anything. The location is great, the hosts are friendly, and there are lovely bodies of water nearby where you can take a walk and relax.

Disliked Our spot was right by the access road, so we could hear everyone driving past early in the morning; if you are a light sleeper, this might be bothersome. Otherwise, everything was fine.

Liked Lovely small campsite

Disliked Noise especially from main house. Thumping music

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: This was during the afternoon and for a birthday, it wasn’t very loud and all music/noise stopped at 8pm. We cant stop people celebrating a birthday during the day and infact its lovely to hear joy and laughter. We are in school holidays and there will be noise as the weather is great.

Local attractions

Burton Springs' closest chunk of coast is at Burnham-On-Sea about seven and a half miles away. Seaside resort Weston-super-Mare is a few miles further along the coast from Burnham; for the Exmoor coastline, stretches of shoreline and sand like Kilve, Dunster, Minehead and Porlock are a short drive in the other direction. The South West Coast Path, Britain's longest long-distance path, starts from Minehead on its epic 630 miles via the coasts of Devon and Cornwall to finish up at Poole Harbour in Dorset. If this is a tad too much, other hikes around the region include the Quantock Hills, England's first National Landscape; Brean Down, a Site of Special Scientific Interest managed by the National Trust, and the Mendip Hills, also a National Landscape and home to splendidly spectacular Cheddar Gorge. The Burton team also reckons guests should take a look at the small wildlife and adventure park Tropiquaria, the National Trust's Dunster Castle and Fyne Court, the Bakelite Museum at Wilton, the RSPB reserve at Greylake, and the rides and attractions of Brean Leisure Park. Paintballing is available at Cannington Park, nearby at Bridgwater.
